Two surgical techniques for exposure of impacted labially positioned maxillary canines were compared as to periodontal conditions at the end of the orthodontic treatment period. In the radical exposure group the alveolar mucosa and bone covering the crown were removed. In the other group a pedicle flap including keratinized gingiva was used for exposure. After the removal of bone the flap was apically positioned and sutured. The non-treated contralateral canines served as controls. The result showed that radical exposure in the region of alveolar mucosa resulted in significantly reduced width of buccal keratinized gingiva, reduced sulcus depth, increased gingival recession and increased gingivitis. The difference between the apically positioned flap group and the non-treated control groups was not significant.

The analgesic effects of a 200-mg oral dose of fentiazac were examined in 49 patients, ranging from 11 to 52 years of age, who had undergone painful dental surgery. Patients' subjective observations of the drug's analgesic effects were obtained by means of a questionnaire in which the intensity of pain and the alleviation of pain were evaluated at various intervals from zero to eight hours after administration of the drug. The study confirmed the drug's tolerability and effectiveness in alleviating pain.

The physical principles underlying the production of the laser effect are described, followed by a more detailed description of the surgical CO2 FLF 25 laser that has been employed for the last 18 months, underlining its original features but also the dangers resulting from the use of these rays. Indications can bae divided into two main groups: --tumours capable of being treated by section or vaporization, --affections of the labial, lingual, jugular, and pharyngeal mucosae in which very effective results have been obtained. The use of the laser is proposed during surgical treatment of maxillofacial lesions and cancer.
Critical evaluation of existing chisel and bur techniques for removal of impacted mandibular third molars reveals a high incidence of complications. Both approaches require creation of a buccal defect immediately distal to the second molar for the insertion of an elevator, which may cause pocketing to occur postoperatively. The method described here minimizes periosteal reflection, almost completely avoids loss of bone, and effectively reduces the use of rotary instrumentation. The planning of the soft tissue flaps and bony cuts assists in primary wound closure, obliteration of dead space, and reduction of postoperative morbidity.
