Total and subtotal colonoscopy with short instrument and without fluoroscopy.

The technique and results of 111 consecutive colonoscopies with a short colonoscope without the use of X-ray screening are reviewed. The caecum could be reached in 44 percent of the cases. No complications occurred. The great clinical value of the procedure is shown by the following findings:X-ray-negative lesions--including 2 cases of carcinoma--were found in 35 percent of the cases, radiologically demonstrated lesions could be defined more precisely in 18 percent, and the presence of colonic lesions could be ruled out in 11 percent in spite of equivocal X-ray findings. It is concluded that many more centres ought to take up the procedure, which offers the prospect of significantly reducing suffering and death from colonic disease.

Potential use of ultrasound in place of X-ray fluoroscopy in urodynamics.

A moving picture can be obtained using an ultrasonic scanning probe in the rectum to provide information about the bladder and urethra in the same projection as for lateral cystography. The method has potential as a substitute for cinecystography but there are a number of problems still to be overcome.

[Digital fluoroscopy imaging system with dual energy X-ray image decomposition].

Dual-kilovolt technique was realized in dual energy X-ray imaging system with computer controlled KV adjustment, filter switching and image acquirement. The dual energy images can be obtained in 2-3 seconds to avoid moving artifact. Low energy photons in high energy X-ray beam can be attenuated effectively by a 2 mm Cu filter to separate the spectra of the high and low energy X-rays. A simplified dual energy decomposition method was used to obtain the soft tissue image. An example of chest dual energy radiographs is presented to illustrate the performance of the system.

[The role of tuberculin test and fluoroscopy in detecting intra- thoracic tuberculosis in children and adolescents living in the rural area with high incidence of tuberculosis].

The analysis of 91 case records of children and adolescents living in rural area with a high incidence of tuberculosis was made. These patients were detected through screening and by means of tuberculin diagnosis and fluorography carried out by a team of health workers on a case-finding mission. The organization of work with due regard for the local conditions makes it possible to use the above methods for an early detection of the given disease; to assess the results obtained from the very beginning of their combined and parallel application; to practice fluorography from the age of 7; to exercise a differentiated approach to an additional examination depending on the distance between the population area and regional center; and optimize health record handling.
