OBJECTIVE: To study the mucociliary transport function of rhinitis sicca and atrophic rhinitis, and to explore the standard of diagnosis. METHOD: The MTR of normal control group, the rhinitis sicca group and the atrophic rhinitis were determined by using saccharin, and then compared. Then MTR of rhinitis sicca treatment group were compared before and after treatment. RESULT: The MTR of normal group: (9.15 +/- 0.86) mm/min; the rhinitis sicca group: (5.84 +/- 0.48) mm/min and the atrophic rhinitis group: (3.36 +/- 0.07) mm/min. There were significant difference among them (P < 0.05). 25 patients of rhinitis sicca were treated by administering the pill of Gelomyrtol forte in 2 weeks. The MTR of rhinitis sicca were no significant difference before and after treatment (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Rhinitis sicca is a separate nasal disease, which is different from atrophic rhinitis. It is important to find an effective treatment for the disease.
1385 patients were subjected to patch tests in the last years. The most important contact allergens in these seris were found to be rubber, nickel, chromate. Compositions of patch tests series varies with regard to the individual substances included: allergens with low sensitizing potency (methol, resorcin, methylsalicylate (!), hexachlorophene, iodochlorhydrooxychinoline) are gradually replaced by others of more recent importance, e.g. mercury (Merfen). Some allergens give better results when tested in higher concentration (balsams of peru, parabens, colophony and wool fat alcohols). Our findings correspond widely with the recommendations of the ICDRG (International Contact Dermatitis Research Group). Therapeutic possibilities are limited; topical application of corticosteroids may be taken as routine regimen. Bufexamac (Parfenac) has been proposed for this purpose, recently. Protective creams (like ion exchange ointments) are of limited use due to the necessity of repeated application.
OBJECTIVE: To establish the method for quality control of Xingnao tinctures. METHOD: The Mentholum, Flos Caryophylli and Borneoum Syntheticum in this medicine were identified by TLC method. The content of Mentholum was determined by GC. Conditions of GC were: With Naphthalene as an internal standard, packed glass column, Shimadzu 7G 2.1 mm x 3.2 m, carrier gas N2, flow rate 50 mL.min-1, column temperature. 145 degrees C, ingector and detector temperature. 180 degrees C, injection way of splitless and injection volume 3 microL. RESULT: The spots on TLC plates were clear, with no interference in the blank reference. The precision and repeatability of GC were are good respectively. The average recovery was 98.4%, RSD = 0.94%. CONCLUSION: This method was fast, simple, accurate and suitable for quality control of Xingnao tinctures.
Essential oil was extracted from Schizonepeta tenuifolia Briq. by supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) and steam distillation (SD). The components extracted were determined by gas chromatography with area normalization method and identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The optimal chromatographic conditions were: capillary column, SE-54 (30 m x 0.25 mm i.d., 0.25 microm); column temperature, 50 degrees C (3 min) --> (5 degrees c/min) 180 degrees C (2 min --> (10 degrees C/ min) 260 degrees C 50 min); split injection, split ratio 1: 50; injector temperature, 280 degrees C. Fifty-four components were identified for the essential oils extracted by SFE, and its main components were found to be pulegone, menthone, linoleic acid chloride etc. Thirty-nine components were identified for the essential oil obtained by SD, and its main components were found to be pulegone, menthone, limonene etc. The SFE method is better than the SD method in reliability stability and reproducibility, and is thus well suitable for similar applications involving for extraction of other traditional Chinese herbal medicines.
The volatile constituents in leaves of Eucalyptus citriodora, including oil fraction and water-soluble fraction, were extracted and determined. Oil fraction of volatile components was obtained through steam distillation. Ether was used as the solvent to extract the water-soluble fraction of volatile compounds from the liquid left after steam distillation in order to know the quantity and constituents of volatile compounds dissolved in the water phase. The oil yield in the oil fraction was 1.36%, and the oil yield in the water-soluble fraction was 0.48% (both on fresh weight basis). Both oil fraction and water-soluble fraction were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method. The results showed that 37 compounds (97.36%) in the oil fraction and 10 compounds (82.05%) in the water-soluble fraction were identified. There were 12 hydrocarbon compounds and 25 oxygenated compounds identified in oil fraction. The major constituents in oil fraction were citronellal (57.00%), followed by citronellol (15.89%) and citronellyl acetate (15.33%). Alcohols dominated the compounds in water-soluble fraction. cis-p-Menthane-3, 8-diol (53.43%) and trans-p-menthane-3, 8-diol (16. 48%) were found to be the major compounds, which have the activity to repel insects. It is concluded that the comprehensive utilization value of leaves of Eucalyptus citriodora was enhanced owing to the extraction of water-soluble volatile components.
The efficacy of 9 repellents (8 commercial repellents and one product under development) was evaluated on the skin at dosages of 0.65 and 1.7 mg of product/cm2, the latter dosage being the industrial standard for deet based repellents. The repellents were applied to the arm or lower leg of a human subject and tested against Anopheles stephensi in a cage or flying freely in a mosquito-proof room. In the cage tests, a product with 20% p-menthane-3, 8-diol (PMD) active ingredient provided complete repellency for 7-8 hours, while with 10% PMD had complete repellency for only 30 minutes. The natural oils of clove (Syzygium aromaticum) (10% active ingredient) plus makaen (Zanthoxylum limonella) (10% active ingredient) gave protection for 4-5 hours. In the case of free flying mosquitoes, products with 20% and 30% PMD gave complete protection for 11-12 hours at a dosage of 1.7 mg/cm2 or 6 hours at half the dosage, while the product with 10% PMD afforded protection for less than 2 hours. At the higher dosage rate 40% citronella and hydroxyethyl isobutyl piperidine carboxylate, a new synthetic compound, provided complete repellency for 7 hours. Fifty percent deet (N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide) was effective for 30 hours if left undisturbed on the skin.
The hepatotoxic monoterpene pulegone is a major constituent of the herbal abortifacient pennyroyal oil. An approximately equimolar mixture of 2H3- and 14C-labeled pulegone was administered to rats to study its phase II metabolism. Radioactive conjugates that were excreted into the bile were isolated by selective derivatization and HPLC separation, and subsequently characterized from the daughter ion mass spectra of protio- and deutero-analogs of each metabolite. The biliary metabolites characterized were glucuronide and glutathione (GSH) conjugates, accounting for approximately 3% of the radioactivity excreted in bile. The glucuronides, which were 2-fold more abundant than GSH conjugates, were mainly of hydroxylated pulegone and hydroxylated, reduced pulegone. The three GSH conjugates contained xenobiotic moieties that varied in their oxidation state; one of these was tentatively identified as the GSH conjugate of the proximate oxygenated metabolite, menthofuran. The two other GSH conjugates apparently underwent subsequent glucuronidation since novel glutathionyl glucuronide conjugates were identified that contained nonhydroxylated xenobiotic moieties. The results indicate that pulegone is bioactivated via at least three distinct pathways, each marked by a different GSH conjugate. Characterization of these conjugates represents a first step in the identification of the reactive metabolites from which they are derived.
