Past and current contraceptive use in Pakistan.

Despite a vigorous national family planning program and such innovations as the Continuous Motivation System, there has been little change in contraceptive use in Pakistan in recent years. Data from the 1968-69 National Impact Survey and the 1975 World Fertility Survey for Pakistan show that, while use rates increased by a small amount in urban areas, the rates in rural areas seem to have declined. Even in urban areas contraceptive use is low in comparison with other developing countries that began family planning programs around the same time. Although this is probably due to differences in economic development, further investigation of program structure and inputs is recommended.

Psychoactive drugs. Uses, misuses, and abuses.

Reasons for not using contraceptives: an international comparison.

This study presents the main reasons for currently not using contraceptives given by currently in-union, nonpregnant women 15-44 years of age in three Asian countries (Bangladesh, Korea, and Thailand) and three Latin American countries (Barbados, Colombia, and Costa Rica). Desire for next child, side effects or health reasons, and temporary infecundity were the most commonly given reasons for current nonuse. In Korea, Thailand, and Barbados, there is little or no disapproval of contraceptives, but in the other countries there is an appreciable amount. Variations in the reasons given by selected socioeconomic and demographic characteristics of the respondents are examined. Among these characteristics, age of the women, number of living children, and ever use of family planning methods are generally the most powerful discriminators of the main reason for nonuse.

The sentiments of love and aspirations for marriage and their association with teenage sexual activity and pregnancy.

This study questions the findings of most research claiming that teenage pregnancies are generally unwanted, unplanned and unintended. It starts with the question of why most sexually active teenagers put themselves at risk of becoming pregnant if they do not desire it. The hypothesis is that sentiments of "love" and "aspirations for marriage" are related to starting sexual activity and subsequent pregnancy. The sample is 123 school-age mothers. It was found that sentiments of "love" were associated with becoming pregnant more than with starting sexual activity. Most of the respondents who were "in love" at the onset of pregnancy were hoping to marry their sex partners and, in fact, many thought that marriage would occur in the very near future following the outcome of pregnancy. These findings suggest that more research needs to be directed at the development of affective bonds with and the aspirations for marriage to the sex partners. Such research may explain why these teenagers put themselves at risk.

Birth control discontinuance as a diffusion process.

This paper applies the diffusion of innovations model to the study of the birth control discontinuance of first-time users in the Dominican Republic. Two sets of factors are examined: social characteristics of the adopters are used to test Rogers's and Shoemaker's contention that discontinuers have more traditional values than continuers; and the adoption decision process is analyzed to identify the relationship of communication factors to discontinuance. Although number of children and experience of method problems were the major determinants of discontinuance, unfavorable information from friends and other birth control users was a significant factor. Rumor was found to have little effect on a women's decision to continue or discontinue.

Attitudes toward the rhythm method in the Philippines.

Two sets of focus group discussions on the advantages and disadvantages of the rhythm method were carried out in the Philippines in 1980 and 1981. The first discussions were held among 30 women and nine men 21-40 years of age, and the second among eight women 25-35 years of age who had voluntary pregnancy terminations after the method had failed. Among the perceived advantages of rhythm were that it permits spontaneous intercourse on the safe days and has no bad side effects. Among the perceived disadvantages were that it is ineffective, especially for women with irregular periods, and it requires abstinence. The women who had had voluntary pregnancy terminations discussed their motivations and rationales and the methods that they had used. The information obtained from the discussions formed the basis for support materials that are now used throughout the country.
