A simple model of the costs and benefits of an infection control programme is presented. Liberal costs and conservative benefits were assumed. The concepts of crude and attributable mortality were applied to examine the cost per life year saved if a minority of infection-related deaths were prevented. An effective infection control programme is one of the most cost-beneficial medical interventions available in modern public health.
The author first studies the reasons why people migrate using a neoclassical approach concerning income differentials. He tests this approach empirically and demonstrates its limits. A demand-determination approach based on human capital theory is then outlined to overcome these limits and to take into account restrictive immigration controls. Migration from Italy, Spain, Greece, Portugal, and Turkey to the European Community destination countries is examined. It is concluded that "the demand for immigrants in the destination country is the decisive condition for the phenomenon of international labor migration, and the supply of migration-willing workers is only a necessary condition."
Healthcare economics has caused dramatic changes in resource assessment, utilization, and reorganization in hospitals. To address the mismatch between demand and resources and to ensure quality at the bedside, staff members at a 354-bed acute care facility designed and implemented the Collaborative Care Model (CCM). The authors describe this theory-based, collaborative, multidisciplinary professional practice model.

"This article uses within-year apprehensions data to test the economic determinants of Mexican undocumented immigration to the United States. These data are highly seasonal and within-year border patrol apprehensions suggest that this seasonality is not solely due to changes in border patrol enforcement." It is found that both supply and demand variables affect apprehensions and that agricultural factors appear to be important determinants of the variations in apprehensions. The results are similar to those of earlier studies

Data for the United States for the period 1970-1977 are used to examine the Tiebout hypothesis of "voting with one's feet", which involves geographic movement to express one's preferenes for public goods. The findings "indicate that white consumer-voters over the period 1970-1977 did in fact vote with their feet with respect to welfare, public education, and property taxation; futhermore, the results presented...are entirely compatible with those of earlier periods (the 1950's and 1960's)."

"This article provides a formal framework for the analysis of the impact of international migration in the presence of remittances. The discussion differentiates between temporary and permanent migration and between the effects of remittances that raise investment and those that raise consumption spending in the source country. Changes in prices, income distribution and national welfare are examined." The geographic focus is worldwide.
