1. The narrow passage within the petiole between thorax and abdomen is anatomically constructed so that counter-current exchange should retain heat in the thorax despite blood flow to and from the cool abdomen. 2. However, the counter-current heat exchanger can be physiologically circumvented. Exogenously heated bumblebees prevented overheating of the thorax by shunting heat into the abdomen. They also regurgitated fluid, which helped to reduce head temperature but had little effect on thoracic temperature. 3. Temperature increases in the ventrum of the abdomen occurred in steps exactly coinciding with the beats of the ventral diaphragm, and with the abdominal 'ventilatory' pumping movements when these were present. The ability to prevent overheating of the thorax by transport of heat to the abdomen was abolished when the heart was made inoprative. 4. At low thoracic temperatures the ventral diaphragm beat at a wide range or rates and with varying interbeat intervals, while the heart beat at a high frequency relative to the ventral diaphragm, but at a very low amplitude. However, when thoracic temperature exceeded 43 degrees C the amplitudes of both were high, and the interbeat intervals as well as the beating frequencies of the two pulsatile organs became identical in any one bee. Furthermore, heated bees engaged in vigorous abdominal pumping at the same frequency as that of their heart and ventral diaphragm pulsations. 5. The results indicate that the anatomical counter-current heat exchanger is reduced or eliminated during heat stress by 'chopping' the blood flow into pulses, and the blood pulses are shunted through the petiole alternately by way of a switch mechanism.

In our studies, micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography (MEKC) was employed in fingerprint analysis of Cnidium monnieri for the first time. Average chromatography of 10 batches Cnidium monnieri from Jiangsu province, China, which have long been considered as the original and genuine herbal medicine, was first established as the characteristic fingerprint. Within 25 min the major effective components were separated by 18 mM borate, 12 mM phosphate and 50 mM SDS (pH 9.2) containing 20% methanol. The relative standard deviations of migration times and peak areas were less than 5%. As a new approach of fingerprint, MKCE was compared to the conventional approach-HPLC in our experiments. The fingerprint developed by HPLC comprised 8 peaks that were collected within 40 min. Relative standard deviation (RSD) values of retention times of corresponding peaks in HPLC analysis were very small (maximum 3% and average 0.9%). In conclusion, each two methods had its advantages and disadvantages. Furthermore, besides HPLC, MEKC as a feasible method, could be used in the development of fingerprint of Cnidium monnieri.

Municipal solid waste (MSW) and sewage sludge (SS) were combined and anaerobically converted into carboxylate salts by using a mixed culture of acid-forming microorganisms. MSW is an energy source and SS is a source of nutrients. In this study, MSW and SS were combined, so they complemented each other. Four fermentors were arranged in series for a countercurrent fermentation process. In this process, the solids and liquid were transferred in opposite directions, with the addition of fresh biomass to fermentor 1 and fresh liquid media to fermentor 4. An intermediate lime treatment of solids exiting fermentor 3 before entering fermentor 4 was applied to improve the product acid concentration from the untreated MSW/SS fermentations. All fermentations were performed under anaerobic conditions at 40 degrees C. Calcium carbonate was added to neutralize the carboxylic acids and to control the pH. Iodoform was used as a methanogen inhibitor. Carboxylic acid concentration and gas composition were determined by gas chromatography. Substrate conversion was measured by volatile solids loss, and carboxylic acid productivity was calculated as the function of the total carboxylic acids produced, the amount of liquid in all fermentors, and time. The addition of intermediate lime treatment increased product concentration and conversion by approx 30 and 15%, respectively. The highest carboxylic acid concentrations for untreated MSW/SS fermentations with and without intermediate lime treatment were 22.2 and 17.7 g of carboxylic acid/L of liquid, respectively. These results confirm that adding a treatment step between fermentor 3 and fermentor 4 will increase the digestibility and acid productivity of the fermentation.
