Sciatic schwannoma of the thigh causing foot pain mimicking plantar neuropathy.

Two patients with plantar foot pain, one mistakenly thought to have tarsal tunnel syndrome, had complete resolution of pain after resection of a sciatic nerve schwannoma of the midthigh. The entire extent of the sciatic nerve should be evaluated in patients presenting with unilateral, neuropathic foot pain.

Thigh length versus knee length stockings in the prevention of deep vein thrombosis.

Above-knee graduated compression stockings are effective in preventing postoperative deep vein thrombosis, but are more expensive and less acceptable than below-knee stockings. One hundred and fourteen patients undergoing major abdominal surgery were randomly allocated to wear above-knee or below-knee graduated compression stockings. Deep vein thromboses were diagnosed by isotope uptake in three of 56 patients (5.4 per cent) in the above-knee group and one of 58 patients (1.7 per cent) in the below-knee group. These differences are not statistically significant. Results suggest that below-knee stockings are as effective as above-knee in the prevention of postoperative deep vein thrombosis.

Thigh adductor flap: an experimental model for free flap transfer in the rat.

A new model of rat muscle free flap transfer is presented. The flap is based on a long pedicle originating from the femoral vessels and continuing down to the distal saphenous margin at the ankle. The distal portion of the semitendinosus muscle is harvested along with the saphenous artery and great saphenous vein. A larger muscle flap may be harvested by including the distal portions of the posterior and anterior gracilis muscles. The flap can be transferred to remote sites on the animal, with a vascular pedicle of up to 3 cm in length. The diameters of the vessels repaired are of standard microsurgical size. This model has distinct advantages of simplicity, speed of dissection, high success rate after microvascular transfer, and versatility in placement of the muscle mass (due to the long pedicle).
