Food sanitation and air safety.

This paper summarizes six ways that poor food hygiene or unsanitary food disposal practices can influence safety. It was prepared in response to a request by the Air Transport Medicine Committee of the Aerospace Medical Association. Fifteen key safety steps than can be taken are given for the use of aviation medicine workers and aircraft operators, especially the airlines.

Sanitation programmes for living spaces and health risks involved.

The former GDR had adopted a housing programme focusing on developing new residential high-rise building areas with district heating at the outskirts of the cities. Deterioration of residential buildings in the city centres was a result of this policy. Since 1990, energy saving measures have been implemented, including installation of new windows, provision of heat insulation and conversion of the old heating systems to non-polluting energy carriers. At the same time many people began to refurnish their homes. While pollution of the outside world could be reduced, considerable problems in the interior rooms emerged. On request of the Public Health Agencies, the Institute of Hygiene of Saxony-Anhalt renders administrative assistance providing environmental health consultancy services. The health disturbances observed occur in connection with the new tight windows and doors. The occupants participate in the problem by not airing their flats sufficiently in an attempt to save heating costs.

Systematic development and validation of sanitization protocols for a chromatographic system designed for biotherapeutics purification.

Production of protein therapeutics through the application of genetic engineering and biotechnology techniques requires comprehensive attention to good manufacturing practice and good laboratory practice (GMP/GLP) guidelines for product recovery and purification. Validated clean-in-place procedures are part of the master method and require analysis of microbial bioburden to assess the efficacy of cleaning protocols. This article describes the extensive microbial challenge of a chromatography system, the use of membrane filtration methods for high sensitivity microbial contamination measurement, and the effectiveness of sodium hydroxide and ethanol solutions in achieving multilog reduction of microbial contamination.
