Evolutionary changes in the olfactory projection neuron pathways of eumalacostracan crustaceans.

Output from the olfactory lobe (primary olfactory center) of eumalacostracan crustaceans is transmitted to the medulla terminalis (MT) and hemiellipsoid body (HB) in the lateral protocerebrum (higher order center) by a large population of projection neurons. In eureptantian crustaceans (lobsters, crayfish, and crabs), these projection neurons also form the output pathway from an additional neuropil, the accessory lobe (higher order center), which appears to have arisen de novo in these animals. In a previous study of lobsters and crayfish we showed that whereas projection neurons innervating the olfactory lobe project primarily to the MT, those innervating the accessory lobe project exclusively to the HB (Sullivan and Beltz [ 2001a] J. Comp. Neurol. 441:9-22). In the present study, we used focal dye injections to examine the olfactory projection neuron pathways of representatives of four eumalacostracan taxa (Stomatopoda, Dendrobranchiata, Caridea, and Stenopodidea) that diverged from the eureptantian line prior to the appearance of the accessory lobe. These experiments were undertaken both to examine the evolution of the olfactory pathway in the Eumalacostraca and to provide insights into the changes in this pathway that accompanied the appearance of the accessory lobe. The innervation patterns of the olfactory projection neurons of the species examined were found to differ markedly, varying from that observed in the most basal taxon examined (Stomatopoda), in which the neurons primarily project to the MT, to those observed in the two highest taxa examined (Caridea and Stenopodidea), in which they primarily target the HB. These results suggest that substantial changes in the relative importance of the MT and HB within the olfactory pathway have occurred during the evolution of the Eumalacostraca.

Assessment of ocular exposure to ultraviolet-B for population studies. Salisbury Eye Evaluation Project Team.

We have developed an empirical model with which to estimate the ocular exposure in the UVB wavelength band. This model incorporates aspects of personal behavior, geographic location, season and wavelength that have been developed from population-based data. This model, in conjunction with job history interviews, allows the estimate of cumulative exposures from age 30 in our population-based study. We present data on average annual exposure by age, gender, race, education and reported photophobia. The exposures in the general population are considerably lower than exposures reported in previous works based on occupational groups. There is a statistically significant difference between males and females, with females having lower exposures. African-Americans have median exposures similar to whites. Exposures decrease with education and with reported photophobia. These data provide the basis for characterizing lifetime exposure for the general population. The variability of exposure is much greater than found in occupational groups and includes numbers in the lowest exposure. The model should permit determination of a dose-response relationship with eye disease, even to the lower dose ranges.

Production of drinking water from raw water containing cyanobacteria--pilot plant studies for assessing the risk of microcystin breakthrough.

Toxins in cyanobacteria are a recognized risk in the treatment of drinking-water treatment. Cyanotoxins can occur in two modifications: cell bound and dissolved in water. The process of toxin release may occur naturally, but it also may be induced through the processes of drinking-water treatment. Both causes of release are relevant to the safety of drinking water. This study investigated cyanotoxin release and elimination through different treatment trains in systematic pilot-scale studies with water from the Weida Reservoir, in Thuringia, Germany. The Weida Reservoir is a dimictic mesoeutrophic reservoir typical for a number of mountainous areas in Europe, with Planktothrix rubescens as the dominant phytoplankton species, and shows a characteristic seasonal pattern of population development and microcystin occurrence. To assess the risk of microcystin breakthrough, the pilot-scale results as well as results of laboratory-scale experiments were used for developing a kinetic model of toxin release in relation to elimination. By calculating removal efficiency of total microcystins (cell bound and dissolved) for different treatment trains, raw water quality was related to the quality targets for finished water, and breakthrough risks could be calculated for given treatment trains and varying cyanobacterial population densities in the reservoir.

Substance abuse treatment need among older adults in 2020: the impact of the aging baby-boom cohort.

BACKGROUND: There is concern that as the baby boom population ages in the US, there will be a substantial increase in the number of older adults needing treatment for substance abuse problems. To address this concern, projections of future treatment need for older adults (defined as age 50 and older) were made. METHODS: Using data from the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse, regression models including predictors of treatment need in 2000 and 2001 were developed. Treatment need was defined as having a DSM-IV alcohol or illicit drug use disorder in the past year. Regression parameters from these models were applied to the projected 2020 population to obtain estimates of the number of older adults needing treatment in 2020. RESULTS: The number of older adults in need of substance abuse treatment is estimated to increase from 1.7 million in 2000 and 2001 to 4.4 million in 2020. This is due to a 50 percent increase in the number of older adults and a 70 percent increase in the rate of treatment need among older adults. CONCLUSIONS: The aging baby boom cohort will place increasing demands on the substance abuse treatment system in the next two decades, requiring a shift in focus to address the special needs of an older population of substance abusers. There is also a need to develop improved tools for measuring substance use and abuse among older adults.

Reinnervation accuracy of the rat femoral nerve by motor and sensory neurons.

Previous studies in the rat femoral nerve have shown that regenerating motor neurons preferentially reinnervate a terminal nerve branch to muscle as opposed to skin, a process that has been called preferential motor reinnervation. However, the ability of sensory afferent neurons to accurately reinnervate terminal nerve pathways has been controversial. Within the dorsal root ganglia, sensory neurons projecting to muscle are interspersed with sensory neurons projecting to skin. Thus, anatomical studies assessing the accuracy of sensory neuron regeneration have been hampered by the inability to reliably determine their original innervation status. A sensory neuron that regenerated an axon into a terminal nerve branch to muscle might represent either an appropriate return of an original sensory afferent to muscle stretch receptors or the inappropriate recruitment of a cutaneous sensory afferent that originally innervated skin. The current experiments used a labeling strategy that effectively labels motor and sensory neurons projecting to a terminal nerve branch before experimental manipulation of the parent mixed nerve. Our results confirm previous observations concerning preferential motor reinnervation for motor neurons, and show for the first time anatomical evidence of specificity during regeneration of sensory afferent projections to muscle. In addition, the accuracy of sensory afferent regeneration was highly correlated with the accuracy of motor regeneration. This suggests that these two distinct neuronal populations that project to muscle respond in parallel to specific guidance factors during the regeneration process.

Health indicators for people with intellectual disabilities: a European perspective.

People with intellectual disabilities make up about 1% of the population of Europe. As trends toward community life advance, they have become more visible and more likely to access generic health systems. Yet evidence suggests that there are striking disparities between the health of this group and that of the general population. Increased longevity means that adults in this group expect to live longer lives and thus to encounter age-related risks for various health conditions. The 'Pomona' project, funded by the EU Health Monitoring Unit, aims to develop a set of health indicators for people with intellectual disabilities. It will build on the work accomplished by the team developing ECHI--European Community Health Indicators. This article outlines the rationale for the project, key elements in its implementation and expected outcomes.

Impact of the coronary health improvement project (CHIP) on several employee populations.

The greatest potential to improve public health lies in the ability of individuals to adopt healthful behaviors. The purpose of this study was to determine whether participation in a facilitator-based video version of the Coronary Health Improvement Project (CHIP) would improve health behaviors and significantly reduce employee health risks. Employees (n = 442) from six worksites in metropolitan Rockford, Illinois, were used in a pretest/posttest design. Employees self-selected to participate in a facilitator-based, CHIP video program. Participants received instruction twice a week, for 8 weeks, via 15 videos shown at each participating worksite. Demographic and biometric data (body weight, body mass index, blood lipids, blood pressure, and fasting blood glucose) were evaluated at baseline and at 8 weeks. All sites individually and collectively demonstrated significant and meaningful reductions in body weight, body mass index, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, and fasting blood glucose. Men demonstrated greater improvement than women, and individuals with higher baseline health risks experienced the greatest reductions in risk. The CHIP video program appears to be an effective method of lowering employee health risks. Future research is needed to determine how long these reductions may persist.

A demographic model for performing site-specific health risk projections.

An extension of an earlier life table model for estimating health risks in occupationally exposed workers is presented. The extension of the earlier methodology incorporates specific fertility assumptions and therefore produces a model that is able to perform health risk projections for populations living in or around sites that release agents with potentially adverse health consequences. Results show that fertility patterns are important for assessing risk, even for short-term projections. The interaction of initial age structure, competing risks from other causes of death, and fertility patterns are all important in determining future levels of excess mortality from various pollutants.
