Leiomyoma of the vagina.

Eight cases of leiomyoma of the vagina are described. Most were diagnosed clinically as lesions other than leiomyomas, and the correct diagnosis was made only after histological examination. The tumours were most commonly situated on the anterior wall of the vagina, varied from 1 to 3 cm in diameter, and were all treated by simple excision. No recurrence was recorded in a follow-up period that varied from 8 months to 20 years.

[Tumor seeding of the abdominal wall after fine needle cytologic puncture of the liver. Apropos of a case].

Tumor seeding of the abdominal wall during fine needle puncture-aspiration of the liver is a very rare complication. The authors report a case of this complication affecting a 50-year-old Senegalese woman. She underwent echo-guided fine needle cyto-puncture of a hepatocellular carcinoma arising from the left lobe, followed by left lobectomy. The subcutaneous nodule was discovered 42 months after cyto-puncture. Histology following its excision revealed infiltration of carcinomatous hepatocytes between the fibers of rectus abdominis. There was no recurrence and the patient was well 10 months after excision of the subcutaneous nodule. With a review of 10 others cases reported in the literature, the authors feel that, although rare, this complication must be avoided and suggest a system for the protection of structures through which the needle passes.

[Venous hemangioma of the temporal muscle. Review of the literature: apropos of a case].

A 41-year-old woman progressively developed a painful tumefaction in the left temporal fossa. The scan showed a isodense intramuscular structure weakly enhanced by contrast medium. Surgical exeresis was performed via the coronal access. Histology of the surgical specimen reported the diagnosis of venous muscular haemangioma. The diagnosis and management of these rare tumours is discussed.

Making the diagnosis: keys to a successful biopsy in children with bone and soft-tissue tumors.

A well-planned and -executed biopsy is critical in the management of a child with either a bone lesion or a soft-tissue mass. A biopsy is necessary when the orthopedic surgeon, in conjunction with the radiologist, believes that the radiographic studies or patient history indicate a progressive process that requires intervention. Biopsies may be open (incisional or excisional) or closed (needle or trephine). Careful attention to biopsy site and technique is important to avoid complications that may compromise the ability to preserve a limb.

The evolution of chemotherapeutic agents for the treatment of pediatric musculoskeletal malignancies.

The incorporation of antineoplastic agents in the treatment of pediatric musculoskeletal malignancies and their impact in the management and outcome of patients with these types of malignancies are briefly reviewed. The role of chemotherapy in the management of these tumors with special emphasis on osteosarcoma, Ewing's sarcoma family of tumors, and rhabdomyosarcoma and undifferentiated sarcomas is discussed. Also included are complications and side effects of the antineoplastic agents.

[The membrane hetero-organic antigens of tumors of hepatocellular and myogenic origins].

Cell-surface antigens of some tumors and homologous definitive tissues were investigated with organospecific immunoserum against rat kidney membranes using methods of immunofluorescence and enzyme immunoassay. Myogenic cells were also tested to resolve the role of the membrane hetero-organic antigens in the process of proliferation. Membrane hetero-organic antigens, commonly attributed to definitive kidney tissue, were found on the cell surface of rat rhabdomyosarcoma RA-2 and cultured cells of rat hepatomas HTC and 27. However, hetero-organic antigens on the surface of active proliferating myogenic cells were not found. It is concluded that membrane hetero-organic antigens, usually attributed to definitive kidney tissue, represent one of characteristic manifestations of neoplastic cell transformation rather than results of intensive proliferation of the cells.

[Myofibroblastic proliferative lesions in the paratesticular area].

Myofibroblastic pseudotumorous proliferations have been recognized at a variety of sites. Six cases of paratesticular myofibroblastic lesions with emphasis on the spectrum of morphologic features were described. The microscopic features changed from abundant cellular spindle cell proliferation resembling nodular (pseudosarcomatous) fasciitis to hypocellular and hyalin fibrovascular lesion with extensive dystrophic calcification. The age of the patients ranged from 14 to 77 years. In four cases sarcoma was suspected histologically. Differential diagnosis and histogenesis of the lesion were discussed.

[Oral, mandibular and oropharyngeal reconstruction with a pedicled trapezius flap].

Reconstruction of large defects of the oral cavity (with or without jaw defects) and the oropharynx is one of the most important challenges in reconstructive maxillofacial surgery. Many reconstruction techniques have been proposed although none has provided total satisfaction. For each patient, accurate evaluation is required to choose the optimal solution. In this study, we reviewed our indications and results with the trapezius flap (with or without spina scapulae for lower jaw reconstruction). We review suggested indications, the technique we applied and results obtained over the past five years after an initial experience of fifteen years. The advantages and disadvantages of this technique are evaluated an indications suggested.
