Menthone and isomenthone biosynthesis in Pelargonium tomentosum Jacq.

Pelargonium tomentosum was fed with aqueous solutions of different deuterium labelled monoterpenoid precursors. After headspace extraction with solid phase microextraction (SPME) the essential oil was analyzed with enantioselective multidimensional gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (enantio-MDGC/MS). Labelled piperitone with different enantiomeric distributions led to labelled (-)-isomenthone and labelled (+)-menthone in the same ratio as genuine (-)-isomenthone and (+)-menthone. Furthermore, labelled pulegone, piperitenone, piperitole and citronellyl glycopyranoside were investigated.

Field evaluation of three plant-based insect repellents against malaria vectors in Vaca Diez Province, the Bolivian Amazon.

The efficacy of repellents against Anopheles darlingi, the main malaria vector in Bolivia, was evaluated. This mosquito has a peak in biting activity early in the evening. Three natural repellents (1 eucalyptus based, 1 neem based, and 1 containing several repellent essential oils) were tested in comparison with 15% deet in human landing catches in Bolivia. The eucalyptus-based repellent containing 30% p-menthane-diol applied at a dose similar to those used in practice gave 96.89% protection for 4 h. Deet gave 84.81% protection. The other 2 products did not provide significant protection from mosquito bites.

[New monoterpenoids from Cynanchum hancockianum].

Five monoterpenoids have been isolated from the roots of Cynanchum hancockianum (Maxim) AI. Iljinski. Their structures were determined on the basis of spectral evidence. The three new compounds are: 4-p-menthane-1,7,8-triol (III), neohancoside A (IV), neohancoside B (V), and the two knowns: 4-p-menthene-1-8, 9-diol (I), and 4-p-menthane-1,8, 9-triol (II). Compound V was purified by acetylation.
