Ecological distribution of stream macroalgal communities from a drainage basin in the Serra da Canastra National Park, Minas Gerais, Southeastern Brazil.

Twelve stream segments were sampled four times in 1998-1999 (one sampling per season) in the drainage basin of the upper São Francisco River (19 masculine 45'-21 masculine 25'S, 49 masculine 05'-51 masculine 30'W), situated in Serra da Canastra National Park, at altitudes ranging from 1,175 to 1,400 m. The macroalgae survey resulted in 30 species, with a predominance of Cyanophyta (12 species = 40%) and Chlorophyta (11 species = 36.5%) and a lower proportion of Rhodophyta (seven species = 23.5%). Two species, Klebsormidium rivulare (Chlorophyta) and Kyliniella latvica (Rhodophyta), were new records for Brazil. Capsosira sp. and Stigonema sp. (Cyanophyta) and the "Chantransia" stage of Batrachospermum (Rhodophyta) were the most widespread macroalgae, occurring in six sampling sites, whereas 11 species were found at only one site. The proportion of macroalgal morphological types were as follows: mats (33%), free filaments (27%), gelatinous filaments (27%), crusts (7%), tufts (3%), and gelatinous colonies (3%). The flora revealed few species in common (4%-8%) with stream macroalgae from other Brazilian regions. The macroalgal communities proved to have species richness values close to the highest values reported in previous studies. The patterns typical for stream macroalgal communities (patchy distribution and dominance of few species) were also found in this basin. However, the stream variables most influential in macroalgal distribution in this study (rocky substratum, low pH, high COD, water color, and current velocity) were essentially the same that best describe the limnological characteristics of this lotic ecosystem. In addition, this combination of variables differed sharply from results of previous studies in other Brazilian stream ecosystems.

Behavioral treatment of deviant sex-role behaviors in a male child.

This study demonstrated reinforcement control over pronounced feminine behaviors in a male child who had been psychologically evaluated as manifesting "childhood cross-gender identity". The clinical history of the subject paralleled the retrospective reports of adult transsexuals, including (a) cross-gender clothing preferences, (b) actual or imaginal use of cosmetic articles, (c) feminine behavior mannerisms, (d) aversion to masculine activities, coupled with preference for girl playmates and feminine activities, (e) preference for female role, (f) feminine voice inflection and predominantly feminine content in speech, and (g) verbal statements about the desire or preference to be a girl. The subject was treated sequentially in the clinic and home environments by his mother, trained to be his therapist. The mother was taught to reinforce masculine behaviors and to extinguish feminine behaviors, by using social reinforcement in the clinic and a token reinforcement procedure in the home. During this treatment, his feminine behaviors sharply decreased and masculine behavior increased. The treatment effects were found to be largely response-specific and stimulus-specific; consequently, it was necessary to strengthen more than one masculine behavior and weaken several feminine behaviors, in both clinic and home settings. A multiple-baseline intrasubject design was used to ensure both replication and identification of relevant treatment variables. Follow-up data three years after the treatment began suggests that the boy's sex-typed behaviors have become normalized. This study suggests a preliminary step toward correcting pathological sex-role development in boys, which may provide a basis for the primary prevention of adult transsexualism or similar adult sex-role deviation.

Masculinity/femininity of the generations: as self-reported and as stereotypically appraised.

Three hundred seventeen adults divided among the younger adult, middle aged, and old generations were asked (a) to judge which of the three generations was most and least masculine/feminine in overall personality style, masculine/feminine in interests and possession of gender skills, and pressured by society to do masculine/feminine sorts of things; and (b) to rate self along each of these dimensions on a Likert scale. Self-reports and beliefs about the generations did not vary as a function of membership in a generation. Young adults and middle aged were belived to be the most feminine and middle aged the most masculine in overall personality style. The middle aged were judged as possessed of the most feminine and masculine interests and the most skilled in feminine endeavors. Middle aged and young adults were judged equally possessed of masculine skills. Social pressure to do masculine and feminine activities was seen as falling equally heavily on younger adults and middle aged. The old were judged as next-most possessed of feminine skills while judged least along the other dimensions.

[Bacterial contamination of breast milk collected through manual expression and stored at room temperature]

OBJECTIVES: To the determine the bacterial contamination profile of unheated expressed breast milk, collected without rigid hygienic precautions and stored at room temperature for nine hours. The purpose was to give poor lactating mothers the alternative of storing their own milk out of refrigerator. A research on cultural, social and economical aspects as well as on donatorś knowledge about breastfeeding was considered necessary. METHODS: 35 donators were interviewed and an experimental investigation was performed with 33 samples of breast milk stored at room temperature (17 masculine C to 30.5 masculine C) and bacteriologically analyzed at zero, three, six and nine hours after collection. The same breast milk was stored at refrigerator (2 masculine C to 6 masculine C) as a control procedure. Total count of bacterial contents and identification of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli were evaluated.RESULTS: The enterviews revealed the low socio-economical and cultural level of lactating mothers and their little experience in expressing, collecting and using their own milk. Bacteriological data analysis showed mesophyllous average of 7.1x10(3)UFC/mL, acceptable outline of bacterial contamination, despite the use of a simplified hygiene technique. After nine hours, samples stored at room temperature showed final average of bacterial contents similar to the first ones (7.3x10(3)UFC/mL) and without relevant statistic differences from the ones kept under refrigeration (p=0.05) for studied bacterias.CONCLUSION: This study shows that it is possible to use unprocessed breast milk for babýs consumption if it is stored at room temperatures until nine hours after it has been collected. However, mothers have to be told about the possibility of storing breast milk for babies later consumption.

Differentiation of sexual behavior in cattle, sheep and swine.

Gonadal steroid hormones influence an animal's sexual behavior through two primary means. During development they affect differentiation of the brain (primarily in males), and after puberty, circulating concentrations of steroids influence expression of sexual behaviors. In mammals, sexual behaviors of females are regarded as inherent (independent of steroids secreted by the developing ovary). Males, on the other hand, must undergo active differentiation that is brought about by actions of testicular steroids on the brain during discrete sensitive periods of early development. Sexual differentiation in mammals is referred to as processes of defeminization and masculinization. Defeminization is loss of behavioral traits inherent to females and occurs prenatally in sheep but postnatally in swine. Comparative data are lacking for cattle, but preliminary evidence indicates prenatal defeminization of sexual behaviors. Masculinization is acquisition of behavioral traits characteristic of males. Adult females of all three species show mounting behavior after prolonged treatment with testosterone, and in cattle and swine, there is, as yet, no strong evidence that males undergo masculinization of sexual behaviors. In sheep, limited observations are suggestive of two sensitive periods for masculinization; one prenatally and one postnatally. The earlier concept that differentiation of sexual behaviors in mammals occurs prenatally in species with a long gestation and postnatally in species with a short gestation must now be modified in view of recent findings in swine, in which defeminization occurs postnatally. Further studies will likely identify additional species differences with respect to differentiation of sexual behaviors.

A lack of autonomy in the contemporary nursing student: a comparative study.

The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not female nursing students are as autonomous as female students in both traditional female occupations and non-traditional occupations. The population included 1,046 undergraduate, female students enrolled in bachelor's degree programs at a state college. Students who participated in the study were from the schools of nursing, education, business and arts and sciences. The two instruments used to measure the characteristics of autonomy, masculinity, and femininity, were the Krutines Autonomy Scale and a modified Bem Sex-Role Inventory Scale. Students from the schools of nursing and education received the lowest scores on autonomy and masculinity and the highest scores on femininity. Students in the school of nursing scored significantly lower in autonomy and masculinity and significantly higher in femininity than the students from the School of Business and the School of Arts and Sciences. There was no significant difference between the scores of students in the School of Nursing and the School of Education. No significant correlation was found between the variables of parent's occupation. Grade Point Average (GPA), Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores or feminine scores and the autonomy scores. However, there was a strong correlation between masculinity and autonomy scores.

[Accidental hypothermia due to generalized psoriasis].

The accidental hypothermia is a disorder of corporal termoregulation, defined as a central temperature below 35 masculine C. According to the intensity may be classified in mild (35-32.2 masculine C), moderate (32.2-28 masculine C) and severe (below 28 masculine C). The most frequent causes are the exposure to cold, use of depressant drugs of central nervous system and hypoglycemia, although there are other less frequent. We present a case of moderate hypothermia due to generalized psoriasis which required admission in the Intensive Care Unit of Hospital García Orcoyen. The termoregulation, pathogenesis, pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of accidental hypothermia are reviewed.

[Crystalline polymorphism of eflucimibe].

The importance, in therapeutics, of the concept of bioavailability and on-going quality research in the formulation of a drug has prompted us to examine the crystalline polymorphism of eflucimibe as from the research phase. This study has been carried out by re-crystallization of the product in organic solvents having a different polarity in a variety of experimental temperature and pressure conditions, then, subsequently, by re-cooling the previously dissolved substance. The analytical methods applied to identify and then describe the polymorphic forms are thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray powder diffraction from synchrotron radiation (XRPD), infrared spectrometry (IR), solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry (SSNMR) and lastly maximum solubility measurements. By means of XRPD, two polymorphic forms called A and B have been clearly identified at ambient temperature. These two crystalline forms were obtained in a reproducible way, then described by DSC, XRPD, IR and SSNMR. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis has shown for polymorphic form A two endothermic phenomena with low energy at about 35 masculine and 118 degrees C attributed by XRDP to conformational polymorphism. The complex endothermic event that extends between 75 masculine and 105 degrees C appears to correspond to successive alterations of a lamellar structure. The solid-solid transition observed at 110 degrees C is due to a change of crystalline phase, then the melting point occurring at about 130 degrees C. For form B, two changes of crystalline phase are clearly observed at about 80 masculine and 120 degrees C. The reversibility of these changes was observed by thermomicroscopy in polarized light. Form A, which is less soluble in absolute ethanol than form B, is the more stable thermodynamically in the temperature range from 25 masculine to 50 degrees C where the data have been obtained. The Van't Hoff diagram layout for each polymorphic form appears to reveal an A<-->B transition temperature in a temperature range lower than 25 degrees C. This study, undertaken as from the research phase, has enabled us to highlight the polymorphism of this new chemical entity by means of XRDP by explaining the nature of the endothermic phenomena observed by DSC, and lastly identify the thermodynamically more stable polymorphic form, thus contributing to a better knowledge of this future drug.

In vivo and in vitro assessment of the androgenic potential of a pulp and paper mill effluent.

The androgenic potential of a New Zealand pulp and paper mill effluent was measured by applying a combination of in vitro and in vivo bioassays with mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) and goldfish (Carassius auratus). The in vivo method assessed the rate of gonopodial development (masculinization) and alterations from normal reproductive behavior in adult female mosquitofish exposed for 21 d to untreated or secondary-treated pulp mill effluent. A second in vivo mosquitofish exposure tested the effect of glass-fiber (type C) filtration of secondary-treated effluent on rates of expression of the same endpoints. Extractable organics analyses of effluents and extracts thereof were conducted. Mosquitofish demonstrated significant masculinization on exposure to either treated or untreated effluent; the frequency of gonopodial development was reduced with effluent secondary-treatment. Male mating behavior was observed in the masculinized adult females. Glass-fiber (type F) filtration of the treated effluent eliminated the masculinizing effect, suggesting that the bioactive compounds were associated with the suspended solids. The in vitro method measured the binding of compounds within a treated thermomechanical/bleached kraft effluent extract to androgen receptors contained in goldfish testis cytosol. Exposure to extracts of either the particulate (glass-fiber filtered) or the dissolved organic fraction of the effluent produced significant binding (as indicated by the displacement of radiolabeled testosterone) to the androgen receptor in goldfish gonadal tissue. Thus, the dissolved organics extract of the treated effluent contained compounds androgenic to goldfish in vitro but not to mosquitofish in vivo. The combined in vitro and in vivo data suggest that the effluent in question could exert effects on the reproductive physiology of fishes through an androgenic mechanism. The androgenic compounds androstenedione and testosterone were not detected in the extracts used for the in vitro component of this study.

Alteration of the submandibular glands of female mice during pregnancy and lactation. A histological, histometric and histochemical study.

The submandibular glands of mice show "masculinization" during pregnancy and lactation. In this work involving morphological, morphometric and histochemical analyses we observed an increase in the volume fraction and area of the granular ducts and the apical granulation of their cells. The maximum response to the masculinization occurred on the 15th day of pregnancy. From this day on a decrease in the volume fraction of the granular ducts starts, even though the gland keeps the "masculine pattern" throughout the end of the lactation phase. Our observations support the intermodulation between striated and granular ducts. In our opinion, the "masculinization" process of the submandibular gland is related to the progesterone increase which takes place during pregnancy; its maintenance during lactation is also connected to prolactin.

Influence of sex and gender roles on high school status systems.

Past research has indicated significant sex differences in determinants of male and female high school students' status as measured by how subjects would like to have been remembered from their high school years. In order to determine if remembrance preference is sex or gender role related, 671 subjects were administered the Bem Sex-Role Inventory (BSRI) and a questionnaire asking if they most wanted to be remembered from high school as a brilliant student, leader in activities, athletic star or most popular. Using both the median split and t-ratio procedures in scoring the BSRI, 206 subjects were selected because they were sex-typed (masculine males, feminine females), cross sex-typed (masculine females, feminine males), or androgynous (scoring high on both masculine and feminine traits). To find a model of best fit, the data were subjected to a log-linear analysis. The variables included were sex, gender role, and remembrance preference. Rather than sex being the influential factor, the model of best fit was a gender role by remembrance preference interaction. If subjects were masculine, they were more likely to choose athletic star than were feminine or androgynous subjects. Most popular and leader in activities were both more likely to be chosen by feminine and androgynous subjects. All groups chose brilliant student more often than any other category. It was concluded that some previously designated sex differences may instead be differences in gender role. Further research should address the distinction between the two.

Androgyny and the career choices of allied health professions students.

Psychological androgyny (the presence of both masculine and feminine personality characteristics in the same individual) has been shown to be related to career sex-role stereotyping and to the selection of some allied health professions careers. The purpose of this study was to determine what the distribution of the four types of gender-related personality categories (androgynous, masculine, feminine, undifferentiated) was among allied health professions students and whether these personality categories were related to actual career choice. The study involved 338 students enrolled in all six allied health professions programs at Weber State College in Ogden, Utah, who completed the Bem Sex-Role Inventory (BSRI), a measure of psychological androgyny. Findings indicated that, in contrast to national normative data, the androgynous personality was the most frequently occurring personality category, followed closely by feminine-typed subjects. Female subjects were nearly equally divided between androgynous and feminine personalities; male subjects were predominantly masculine-typed individuals. In addition, the largest percentage of students enrolled in the nursing, respiratory therapy, radiologic technology, and medical technology programs were androgynous personalities; the dental hygiene and paramedic programs had, respectively, more feminine and more masculine students enrolled. These findings indicated that, although some professions were still sexually stereotyped in terms of students' personality characteristics, there may be an emerging trend toward androgyny in the allied health professions. Future research efforts might be directed toward replications of this study using allied health students at other educational institutions.

Sex role orientation, level of cognitive development and mathematics performance in late adolescence.

Sex differences in mathematics performance are found in late adolescence. This study investigates the effects of psychological sex role orientation (BSRI: masculine, feminine, undifferentiated, androgynous) and level of cognitive development (concrete, formal) on performance in mathematics. ANOVA analysis (N = 69; 18 males, 51 females) revealed significant effects for level of cognitive development and for masculine by feminine sex role orientation interaction. Subjects whose BSRI masculine and feminine scores were either both low or both high scored significantly lower on the mathematics test than subjects whose scores on either masculine or feminine scales were high. This indicates lower mathematics performance for androgynous and undifferentiated subjects. This result is hypothesized to be a function of the particular age level of these subjects and their concomitant overconcern with appropriate sex role development.

Adult reactions to children's cross-gender verbal behavior.

Reactions of teachers and college students were obtained to a child, labeled male or female, exhibiting stereotypically masculine or feminine verbal behavior. The findings were: (1) adults did not redirect or discourage cross-gender compared with gender-appropriate behavior; (2) adults rated same-sex children higher on a subset of masculine traits, regardless of the child's behavior; (3) adult females rated the child more positively and responded to the child in a more reinforcing manner than did males; (4) male teachers responded to the child more positively than nonteachers, but the reverse was true for females; (5) all adults reinforced feminine more than masculine behaviors; and (6) nonteachers were more attracted to the female child and the child exhibiting feminine behaviors, while teachers were more attracted to the male child and the child exhibiting masculine behaviors.

Adolescent males' orientation toward paternity and contraception.

Data from a nationally representative sample of 1,880 young men aged 15-19 reveal that neighborhood quality, parental education, race or ethnicity, and attitudes about male gender roles are related to young men's attitudes toward an unplanned pregnancy and to their contraceptive experiences. Young men who live in poor neighborhoods are more likely to be pleased about an unplanned pregnancy than those who have better living conditions (12% vs. 2%) and are also more likely to view impregnating a woman as enhancing their masculinity (8% vs. 3%). Among men with average living conditions, 12% of black adolescents view fathering a child as enhancing their masculinity, compared with 6% of white adolescents; among those with very good living conditions, these proportions were 10% and 2%, respectively. Young men whose parents had less education and those who held traditional male gender role attitudes were also more likely than their counterparts to view fathering a child as enhancing their masculinity. Regarding contraceptive behavior, sexually active black men and Hispanic men were more likely than white men to have discussed contraception with their last partner; black men were more likely to have used an effective contraceptive method the last time they had intercourse; and black men were more likely to have used a condom at last intercourse. However, young men who were aware that they had been responsible for a previous pregnancy were less likely than those who reported no pregnancies to have used an effective contraceptive the last time they had intercourse. These same young men were also more likely to report that fathering a child would please them and enhance their masculinity.

Effects of testosterone implants in pregnant ewes on their female offspring.

Pregnant ewes were implanted with 1 g testosterone between days 30-80, 50-100, 70-120 or 90-140 of gestation. Ewes treated between days 30-80 and 50-100 showed increased aggressive behaviour and clitoral enlargement, whereas this was not seen in the day 70-120 or 90-140 groups. Although the implants released similar amounts of testosterone at all stages of gestation, plasma testosterone concentrations were lower in the day 70-120 and 90-140 groups. The increased testosterone clearance in late gestation could be a result of increased placental aromatization. Masculinization of the genital tubercle was complete in female lambs in the day 30-80 group, partial in the day 50-100 and 70-120 groups, and absent in the day 90-140 group. These results therefore suggest that the 'critical period' for masculinization of the external genitalia is between days 40 and 50 of foetal life. In contrast to this anatomical masculinization, one aspect of behavioural masculinization had a later critical period, since female lambs of 30-80, 50-100 and 70-120 day groups adopted male-like urination postures, whereas the day 90-140 offspring showed the normal female pattern.

Effects of embryonic estrogen on differentiation of the gonads and secondary sexual characteristics of male zebra finches.

Male zebra finches sing to court females, whereas females do not normally sing. In parallel, the telencephalic brain regions that control song are larger in volume and contain larger cells in males than in females. The vocal control organ (syrinx) is also larger in males. Some evidence suggests that the sexual differentiation of both anatomy and behavior is under the regulation of gonadal hormones during early development, yet recent data conflict with the idea that the sole source of masculinization of the neural song system is the testes. In the present experiment, we treated genetic males with estradiol benzoate on embryonic day 5 and measured the volume of and neuron soma size in robust nucleus of the archistriatum (RA) and the high vocal center (HVC), two telencephalic song control nuclei. We also weighed the syrinx, the muscles of which are the target of the motor pathway containing the two brain regions. The estrogen treatment disrupted testicular morphology, and induced an oviduct in six of seven animals, but it had no effect on any of four measures of masculinization of the neural song system. These results suggest that normal testicular tissue is not required for masculine development of the neural song system.

The relationship between sex-role orientation and the type A behavior pattern: a test of the main effect hypothesis.

Examined the relationship between sex-role orientation and the Type A behavior pattern. Eighty undergraduates were classified as high or low on masculinity and femininity on the basis of Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI) formed on student Jenkins Activity Survey (JAS) scores for pooled Ss, for males, and for females; each yielded a main effect for masculinity. JAS scores were correlated positively with BSRI Masculinity scores and not correlated with BSRI Femininity scores across pooled Ss, across males, and across females. These results are discussed in terms of their research and treatment implications.
