[Prediction of lymph node metastasis with binary logistic regression in gastric carcinoma].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate more specific markers to predict the lymph node metastasis in gastric carcinoma. METHODS: The expression of heparanase mRNA was detected by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in 43 cases with gastric cancer. The expressions of CD44V6, MMP-7, nm23 and syndecan-1 protein were examined by streptavidin-peroxidase (SP) two-step method. Clinicopathological features influencing lymphatic metastasis such as age, sex, tumor size, tumor location, Borrmann classification, histological type, differentiation and serosal infiltration were also analyzed. RESULTS: Twenty-seven cases (62.8%) in 43 gastric cancer patients had lymphatic metastasis. The incidence of metastatic lymph nodes was(36.3 +/- 30.8)%. The median incidence was 19%. Univariate analysis showed that tumor size, serosal infiltration, expressions of heparanase mRNA, CD44V6, nm23 and syndecan-1 protein were risk factors for lymph node metastasis in gastric carcinoma. Multivariate analysis showed expressions of nm23 and syndecan-1 protein, serosal infiltration were independent factors for lymph node metastasis. CONCLUSION: Gastric cancer with serosal infiltration, positive expressions of nm23 and syndecan-1 has greater possibility of lymph node metastasis.

Predicting childhood sexual or physical abuse: a logistic regression geo-mapping approach to prevention.

This study investigates the degree to which gender, ethnicity, relationship to perpetrator, and geomapped socio-economic factors significantly predict the incidence of childhood sexual abuse, physical abuse and non- abuse. These variables are then linked to geographic identifiers using geographic information system (GIS) technology to develop a geo-mapping framework for child sexual and physical abuse prevention.

Optimizing blood component preparation: qualitative, logistic and economic aspects.

The changing pattern in transfusion medicine with emphasis on the collection of plasma for fractionation and Factor VIII production, an increased use of platelets, and needs to reduce virus transmission and leukocyte immunogenicity, has made it important to optimize the procedures used in the preparation of blood components. The anticoagulant solution should allow sufficient time between collection and component preparation without considerable loss of quality. Whenever possible, red cells and platelets should be stored in special storage media, thus allowing a maximum volume of plasma to be collected and fractionated into plasma products. Some examples of procedures in current use or under development and their practical and economical consequences are given in this brief review.

Assessment of risk factors for culling dairy cows using logistic regression. Definition of outcome and explanatory variables.

The culling of dairy cows can occur either early or late during lactation. Furthermore, the farmers decision-making process is probably not identical for cows culled early in lactation and for cows culled later. Most of the studies investigating associations between diseases and culling were performed without considering the time of culling during lactation. The present study defines d 45 post partum as a threshold between early and late cullings, and proposes 2 lists of possible risk factors, whether cows were culled early or late during lactation.
