Three new linear compounds of the type Co(3)(dpa)(4)X(2), where dpa is the anion of di(2-pyridyl)amine and X is NCS(-) (5), CN(-) (6), and N(CN)(2)(-) (7), have been prepared, and their structures and magnetic behavior have been studied. In all of them, including three different solvates of 5, the Co(3) chains are symmetrical with Co-Co distances of ca. 2.31-2.32 A. The appearance of four lines in the (1)H NMR spectra of the three compounds is also consistent with a symmetrical structure in solution. For all compounds, the magnetic behavior is quite similar with mu(eff) of ca. 1.9-2.0 micro(B) at temperatures between 1.8 and 200 K. As the temperature increases, the effective moments increase gradually, but since saturation is not reached, even at 400 K, the high-spin state cannot be assigned.
MeNCS undergoes insertion into the copper(I)-aryloxide bond to form [N-methylimino(aryloxy)methanethiolato]copper(I) complexes. This insertion occurs in the absence of ancillary ligands unlike the analogous insertion of PhNCS. The reaction with 4-methylphenoxide results in the formation of hexakis[[N-methylimino(4-methylphenoxy)methanethiolato]copper(I)] (1), which has been characterized by X-ray crystallography. Crystal data for 1: hexagonal R&thremacr;, a = 12.365(3) Å, c = 36.734(16) Å, gamma = 120 degrees, Z = 3, V = 4863(3) Å(3), R = 0.0306. Reactions of 2,6-dimethyl- and 4-chlorophenoxides also result in analogous copper(I) complexes 2 and 3. Addition of stochiometric amounts of PPh(3) to the oligomeric complexes typically results in the extrusion of MeNCS. The ease of extrusion is dependent on the substituents on the aryloxide, and this deinsertion is accelerated by water. However, the extrusion reaction is slow enough in the case of the N-methylimino(2,6-dimethylphenoxy)methanethiolate complex and the isolation of an intermediate monomeric product bis(triphenylphosphine)[N-methylimino(2,6-dimethylphenoxy)methanethiolato]copper(I) (4) is possible. Crystal data for 4: triclinic P&onemacr;, a = 10.088(2) Å, b = 11.302(1) Å, c = 17.990(2) Å, alpha = 94.06(1) degrees, beta = 95.22(2) degrees, gamma = 103.94(1) degrees, Z = 2, V = 1974.4(7) Å(3), R = 0.0361. In the presence of of PPh(3), the insertion reaction becomes reversible. This allows the exchange of the heterocumulene MeNCS or the aryloxy group in these molecules with another heterocumulene or a phenol, respectively, when catalytic amounts of PPh(3) are added. Oligomers with exchanged heterocumulmes and phenols could be characterized by independent synthesis.

(+)-cis-N-(4-Isothiocyanatobenzyl)-N-normetazocine (BNIT) (+)-(4) was designed and synthesized as a derivative of the potent and selective sigma(1) receptor ligand (+)-cis-N-benzyl-N-normetazocine for irreversibly blocking sigma(1) binding sites. Pretreatment of guinea pig brain membranes with BNIT (0.1, 1, and 5 microM) caused a concentration-dependent loss of binding of the selective sigma(1) ligand [(3)H]-(+)-pentazocine. Binding experiments with [(3)H]-1,3-di(2-tolyl)guanidine ([(3)H]-DTG), a ligand of sigma(1) and sigma(2) receptors, showed that pretreatment with BNIT blocked only the sigma(1) component of [(3)H]-DTG binding.
2-Vinylaziridines undergo cycloaddition reactions with various heterocumulenes, in the presence of [Pd(OAc)(2)] and PPh(3), at room temperature and 1 atm pressure, regioselectively affording five-membered ring products in moderate to high yields. The mixture of stereoisomers obtained by reactions employing cis-1-butyl-2-vinyl-3-methylaziridine as the reactant provides evidence for a mechanism involving a eta(3)-eta(1)-eta(3) interconversion of a (pi-allyl)palladium intermediate.
