Informatics issues for nursing's future.

Automated clinical databases are crucial to the future of nursing but presently are not meeting the needs of clinicians, administrators, educators, or researchers. This article examines theoretical, empirical, and practical issues relating to the development of automated nursing clinical databases that will foster safe, effective practice and further nursing's knowledgebase. A series of key questions are identified relevant to each issue. These issues must be resolved if nurses are to take full advantage of the possibilities inherent in the evolving information technology.

The importance of informatics competencies in nursing: an Australian perspective.

Over the past two decades, dramatic changes have occurred in the nature and extent of communication and information technology use in nursing worldwide. The need for student nurses to be well prepared for the use and application of information technology in nursing is arguably now paramount. This article details areas where information and communication technology is used in nursing in Australia and discusses why nurses must be diligent in maintaining skills in this area to facilitate the delivery of safe, quality care in any healthcare setting. It will then discuss the importance of information and communication technology (ICT) skills, knowledge and understanding as an integral aspect of nursing programs in tertiary institutions. The challenge for training providers to prepare nurses for ever-changing ICT technology and technological applications in their workplace is highlighted.

A public health nursing informatics data-and-practice quality project.

Automation of nursing documentation in client records is one of today's formidable challenges in healthcare settings. Some stakeholders view standardized nursing language as a fundamental component of an automated record, with the end goal of generating valid, reliable data on nursing services and client outcomes. However, few successful applications of standardized nursing language for practice standards and data generation exist in the literature. A joint practice-and-data quality project based on standardized nursing language in an automated platform was undertaken by four local public health departments. Outcomes of this project included articulation of standards for nursing practice and creation and implementation of a sound data quality infrastructure for nursing documentation of client assessments, service delivery information, and client outcomes.
