Lowering the pH of sodium hypochlorite has been shown to greatly improve its efficacy as a disinfectant for irreversible hydrocolloid. This study evaluated the surface roughness and detail reproduction of gypsum casts recovered from impressions disinfected with sodium hypochlorite at altered pH levels. The experimental disinfectants were sodium hypochlorite 0.525% (10-minute immersion) at pH 11.5 (unaltered), pH 10, and pH 8. An additional group was tested at pH 10 for 5 minutes. There was a trend toward increased surface roughness as the pH was lowered, but a 5-minute immersion of impressions in sodium hypochlorite at pH 10 produced casts of equivalent surface roughness to impressions rinsed in water and poured immediately. The test for surface detail reproduction produced similar results.
This study examined the linear dimensional stability of nonaqueous elastomeric impressions made from stock and custom trays by measuring casts derived from those impressions at 1 hour, 1 day, and 1 week. There was a small statistical difference among casts produced from stock versus custom trays compared to the master model. However, there was no significant difference in casts produced from impressions poured at 1 hour, 1 day, and 1 week. A custom tray with a 2.0 to 2.5 mm tray spacing had the least amount of variation, yet the differences between custom and stock trays may not be clinically significant.

The microbiological status and disinfecting effect of Vikopres zinc-oxide eugenol paste was investigated after the functional impression was taken. The examinees were persons with edentulous maxilla (n = 32). The silicon paste of similar viscosity applied in the same persons was used as the control. The samples for microbiological tests were taken immediately, 30 minutes later and 3 hours after the impression was made. Significantly less samples with positive bacteriological findings were found on Vikopres paste, compared to the control one.

The purpose of the present investigation was to determine the relationship between the reproducibility of soft tissue contours by three different functional impression techniques and four dentists for mandibular distal-extension removable partial dentures. The selected functional impression methods were Lejoyeux, Rouot and McLean techniques. A mucostatic impression technique was used for the control group. To compare and measure the degree of tissue displacement, a three-dimensional coordinate measuring system was used. The differences in vertical displacement of soft tissue among the operators were statistically determined for each impression technique used. Lejoyeux technique produced the least variation in tissue displacement followed respectively by McLean, mucostatic and Rouot methods.
