Infantile lobar emphysema and tracheal bronchus in a patient with congenital heart disease.

A 7-month-old girl was admitted with severe respiratory distress. Chest roentgenogram showed hyperinflation of the right middle lobe and mediastinal shift. Bronchogram showed tracheal lobe displaced superiorly by the hyperinflated right middle lobe. Echocardiography showed left-to-right shunt at the ventricular level. The patient responded well after surgical correction of cardiac defect. Four years after the operation, computed tomography examinations showed no evidence of emphysema.

Bronchi↗

Sleeve resection of the bronchus and pulmonary artery for pulmonary lesions.

The tissue preserving resections for non-small-cell bronchial carcinoma were grouped into 3 main categories: I. bronchoplastic procedures, II. angioplastic procedures, and III. concomitant bronchoplastic and angioplastic procedures, and into the subgroups of standard and extended sleeve resections. The indications were: elderly patients, impaired respiratory reserve, limited tumor growth, and palliative surgery. The analysis of 229 cases yielded follow-up data in 192 cases. The estimated 5-year survival rates were 34% in category I, 19% in II, and 14% in III. The decreasing survival is due to greater tumor burden. The operative mortality rate was 8.9% in category I, and 17% in category III, and therefore comparable with standard or extended pneumonectomy respectively. Surgical techniques and postoperative complications are discussed.

[Bronchus cancer and pregnancy].

The association of bronchogenic carcinoma and pregnancy is a rare event. If current smoking patterns of women continue, it will be seen with increased frequency. We discuss the diagnostic problems in such a case. Therefore too suspicious symptoms in pregnancy need to be evaluated.

[Retinal and vitreal metastasis of a small cell bronchus cancer].

The rare form of retinal metastasis with infiltration of the vitreous is presented in terms of a 47-year-old female patient suffering from an oat cell bronchogenic carcinoma with remote metastasis. Clinical appearance, differential diagnosis, diagnostic evaluation, histology and evolution are discussed.
