Peripheral inflammation and executive function among community samples across the lifespan: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Higher levels of peripheral inflammatory markers are proposed to disrupt cognitive processes; however, the extent to which this relationship applies to executive functions, specifically, has yet to be systematically evaluated. The current meta-analysis synthesizes all available literature measuring the association between peripheral inflammation and executive functions among community individuals across the lifespan. This systematic review searched Web of Science, PubMed, and PsycINFO for published and unpublished studies, in the English language, that assessed the association between markers of peripheral inflammation and self-report and behavioral measures of executive function. In addition to methodological and demographic information, correlation/beta coefficients were extracted from included studies to quantify the association between inflammation and executive functions. This review included 58 studies, 41 of which were included in the random-effects meta-analysis (N = 255,539). Among community individuals, higher levels of CRP and IL-6 were associated with poorer executive functioning. These results did not differ when models accounted for potential confounding variables. Meta-regressions revealed that the relationship between inflammatory biomarkers and executive function did not differ as a function of age, adiposity, or percentage of the sample who identified as female. Results of the present review indicate that higher levels of specific inflammatory markers are associated with lower performance on executive function measures; however, we observed significant heterogeneity in the study design and measurement of both inflammation and executive functioning, suggesting important considerations for future research.

Prevalence and risk factors of red blood cell alloimmunization among sickle cell disease patients in resource-limited countries: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited hemoglobinopathy characterized by hemoglobin S production, in which homozygous individuals (HbSS) develop a broad range of acute and chronic complications. While disease-modifying and curative therapies are increasingly available in high-income settings, red blood cell (RBC) transfusion remains the mainstay of treatment in resource-limited countries and is associated with high rates of alloimmunization. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to estimate the prevalence of alloimmunization and identify associated risk factors among patients with SCD living in resource-limited settings. METHODS: Africa Journals Online (AJOL), Embase, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched for original studies published from inception to December 15, 2025. Only studies conducted in low- and lower-middle-income countries (LMICs) were included. Eligible studies evaluated the prevalence of alloimmunization in patients with SCD receiving RBC transfusions. A random-effects meta-analysis of proportions was performed to pool quantitative data, while qualitative findings were systematically summarized in tabular form. Statistical heterogeneity was assessed using the I² statistic and further explored using Baujat plots, leave-one-out analyses, and meta-regression. RESULTS: Our analysis included 27 studies conducted in Africa (n = 23) and Asia (n = 4), predominantly from lower-middle-income countries (n = 19) and mainly employing a cross-sectional design (n = 20), comprising 3128 previously transfused patients with SCD. The pooled prevalence of RBC alloimmunization was 8.76% (95% CI: 6.71-11.37%; I² = 75%). Higher alloimmunization rates were observed in West and North Africa, particularly in Côte d'Ivoire, Egypt, and Nigeria, whereas lower rates were reported in Asia and East Africa. The most frequently identified antibodies belonged to the Rh blood group system (n = 153), followed by the Kell system (n = 65). CONCLUSION: In resource-limited settings, RBC alloimmunization is a frequent and clinically significant complication in patients with SCD, contributing to increased morbidity and potential mortality. Targeted and economically viable antigen matching may reduce alloimmunization rates and improve transfusion safety in LMICs.

Plasma proteomics reveal SERPINA1 and CD59 as candidate biomarkers for COVID-19 severity stratification and prognosis prediction.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 has been closely associated with coagulation abnormalities. However, existing biomarkers, including D-dimer and fibrin degradation products (FDP), exhibit limited accuracy in stratifying disease severity and predicting long-term clinical outcomes. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to use proteomic analysis to identify plasma biomarkers associated with COVID-19 severity and prognosis, and validate their predictive utility for mortality and thromboembolic complications. METHODS: Plasma proteomic profiles were analyzed across three COVID-19 severity classes. Differential expression analysis and functional analysis were performed. Clustering analysis was used to identify proteins correlated with disease severity. Candidate biomarkers were validated in an independent cohort. Predictive performance of the biomarkers for mortality, sepsis and venous thromboembolism was evaluated using bootstrap-corrected ROC analyses and multivariable regression analyses. RESULTS: Proteomic analysis revealed progressive involvement of the coagulation and complement pathway with increasing disease severity. SERPINA1 and CD59 were identified as candidate biomarkers and exhibited significantly higher plasma levels in severe cases. Bootstrap-corrected ROC analyses demonstrated strong predictive performance: SERPINA1 achieved AUCs of 0.775 and 0.924 for 30-day and 12-month mortality, and CD59 achieved AUCs of 0.720 for sepsis; the combined model further improved prediction of 12-month mortality (AUC 0.946) and sepsis (AUC 0.904), outperforming D-dimer and FDP. Multivariable regression confirmed their independent prognostic value. CONCLUSION: This exploratory study identifies SERPINA1 and CD59 as candidate prognostic biomarkers in COVID-19, highlighting the role of coagulation and complement-related pathways in disease severity and warranting further prospective validation.

Cloning of two Hsp70 genes and association analysis between SNP haplotypes and high temperature tolerance trait in red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii).

Aquaculture is suffering the challenge from high temperature climate. Two Hsp70 genes, PcHsp70-1 and PcHsp70-2, as key genes involved in the high temperature tolerance of red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) were identified and cloned in this study. Their molecular features and expression patterns were characterized, revealing the distinct tissue-specific upregulation expression under high temperature stress (33 °C). Two SNPs, PcHsp70-1 (SNP258) and PcHsp70-2 (SNP555) were examined to associate with high temperature tolerance in three populations (n = 675). The genotypes of PcHsp70-1-SNP258 (GA) and PcHsp70-2-SNP555 (TT) were significantly associated with stronger high temperature tolerance. Notably, individuals carrying the haplotype of Hap I (GG + TT) showed a survival rate exceeding 70% under high temperature stress, whereas, the Hap VIII (AA + CT) showed it at 5.2%. RNA interference of PcHsp70-1 resulted in a significant decrease expression of the gene GSH-Px and its encoding protein (glutathione peroxidase) activity, and damage in intestinal tissue under high temperature stress. The transcriptome result revealed that PcHsp70-1 participates in regulation of the pathways related to cytoskeletal construction, immune response, apoptosis, and antioxidant defense. These findings indicate that PcHsp70 genes are crucial for the cellular stress response under high temperature stress. The developed Kompetitive Allele Specific PCR (KASP) markers provide valuable tools for the marker-assisted selection of high temperature tolerant crayfish varieties, supporting the sustainable development of aquaculture under the challenge of global warming.

Neuroimaging anxious children and adolescents before and after cognitive behavioral therapy: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: This systematic review investigates brain changes in youths with anxiety disorders following cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and neural markers that predict CBT responses. METHODS: We conducted a systematic search using the electronic databases PubMed, Web of Science, and ProQuest. The inclusion deadline was set to October 27, 2025. We included fifteen peer-reviewed neuroimaging studies that examined the effects of CBT in youths under 19 years old with a primary clinical diagnosis of an anxiety disorder based on DSM-5 criteria. RESULTS: Although the existing literature is marked by substantial diversity in methods and outcomes, task-related neural response in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC, 2/8, 25.0%), insula (1/8, 12.5%) increased from pre to post CBT and these changes were further correlated with clinical symptom improvements. Moreover, CBT outcomes were predicted by pre-treatment activity or connectivity in the ACC and amygdala (3/13, 23.0%). A smaller proportion of studies (2/13, 15.3%) found that activity or connectivity in the insula, precuneus/cuneus, postcentral gyrus, and activity or structure in the nucleus accumbens (NAcc) predicted response to CBT. The low consistency of these findings was driven by methodological variability, low reliability of the neural markers, and relatively small sample sizes. CONCLUSIONS: This review highlights promises of neural predictors and outcomes to enhance anxiety disorder treatments in children and adolescents, facilitating future personalized and effective CBT. Beyond this initial promise, the field is hindered by methodological inconsistencies and limited replications. While longitudinal and personalized approaches are important next steps, the central challenge remains: identifying neural markers that are both reliable and robust.

Meta-analysis of source identification and apportionment in soil: A systematic review of analytical procedures, receptor modeling, and environmental applications.

Soil pollution poses significant risks to ecosystems and human health, necessitating accurate source identification and apportionment to guide mitigation strategies. This systematic review evaluates the application of Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) and other receptor models in soil pollution studies, focusing on analytical procedures, tracer indicators, and environmental applications. This review aims to provide a comprehensive framework for conducting soil source apportionment studies, aiding policymakers in designing effective, region-specific environmental management strategies by compiling global trends and methodological insights. The study addresses sampling protocols, emphasizing representativeness and quality control. Data from 500 peer-reviewed publications highlight the dominance of research in China, Eastern Europe, and South Asia, with agricultural soils being the most frequently studied. Key findings reveal that traffic emissions (20.8 %) and industrial activities (19.4 %) are the primary global contributors to soil contamination, with regional variations such as coal combustion in cold climates and agricultural inputs in developing regions. Policy recommendations include stricter industrial regulations, sustainable agricultural practices, and targeted remediation efforts based on source-specific risks.

Pervasive hybridization and introgression in Diervilleae (Caprifoliaceae).

Diervilleae (Caprifoliaceae) is a horticulturally important lineage with striking floral diversity and a long history of interspecific crossing, suggesting reticulate evolution. We integrated nuclear SNPs and whole plastome data to reconstruct a phylogenomic backbone for the tribe and to identify hybrids, cultivated accessions, and introgression among lineages. Nuclear and plastid phylogenies consistently recover Weigela and Diervilla as reciprocally monophyletic and resolve four major lineages within Weigela, providing a reproducible framework for revising sectional limits and species boundaries. Cultivated accessions form a well supported clade sister to W. florida and show predominantly W. florida ancestry while retaining contributions from multiple wild lineages, consistent with recurrent crossing, backcrossing, and selection. Analyses of wild populations reveal recurrent hybrids and enable plausible parental combinations to be inferred. Tests across the genome further indicate strong evidence for historical introgression across Diervilleae, with the strongest signals involving W. middendorffiana, W. maximowiczii, and Diervilla. Fossil evidence, divergence time estimation, and paleodistribution modelling together suggest range expansion during the Miocene and Pliocene followed by climate driven contraction, providing a spatiotemporal context for episodic contact, introgression, and the East Asia-North America disjunction.

Nitrogen sources and concentrations shape algal odor compounds: Key drivers of β-cyclocitral and β-ionone in water bodies of the lower Yangtze River.

Taste and odor (T&O) compounds derived from cyanobacterial blooms pose escalating threats to freshwater security worldwide, yet the drivers of specific T&O metabolites remain poorly constrained. Here, we investigated the dual effects of nitrogen (N) sources and concentrations on the production of β-cyclocitral and β-ionone, two algal-derived T&O compounds, through integrated field surveys (54 sites across lakes and rivers) in the eutrophic lower Yangtze River, China, and laboratory cultivation of typical cyanobacteria (Microcystis aeruginosa and Pseudanabaena cinerea). Our field data revealed that the concentrations of β-cyclocitral and β-ionone in lakes and rivers were not significantly different, but increased with the trophic level index. Redundancy analysis and Mantel analysis showed that Microcystis and Pseudanabaena were potentially dominant contributors to β-cyclocitral and β-ionone in the water column. Structural equation modeling and variation partitioning analysis showed that enhanced nitrate (NO3--N) significantly promoted the production of these compounds. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that inorganic N (NaNO₃) maximized total T&O yields by promoting algal biomass, whereas organic N (urea and glutamic acid) elevated the T&O production per unit biomass by 1.5- to 9.5-fold. Notably, Pseudanabaena exhibited a 2.3-fold higher β-ionone yield than Microcystis, with greater sensitivity to N concentrations. Our study highlights the critical role of nitrogen pollution, both source and concentration, in the production of T&O compounds by phytoplankton and provides reference data for managing T&O issues in rivers and shallow lakes.

Effects of hospital planning reforms on access, costs, efficiency, and quality of care in OECD countries: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Many OECD countries have implemented hospital planning reforms to rising healthcare costs, demographic changes, and concerns about access, efficiency, and quality of care. Despite broad implementation, evidence on effectiveness remains fragmented and country-specific. OBJECTIVE: To synthesize evidence on the effects of hospital planning reforms aross four outcome domains: access, costs, efficiency, and quality of care. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review following Cochrane methodology, searching PubMed and Web of Science (January 2000 - September 2025). Studies were categorized into four intervention types - centralization, minimum volume requirements (MVR), performance-based targets, and governance and ownership restructuring. Risk of bias was assessed using Joanna Briggs Institute checklist for quasi-experimental designs. Where data permitted, random-effects meta-analyses pooled standardized mean differences (SMD) for access and efficiency and risk differences (RD) for quality outcomes. RESULTS: 26 studies from 12 countries were included. Centralization increased patient travel distances and reduced length of stay (SMD -0.09, 95% CI -0.17 to -0.01) and complications (RD -14.52 pp, -25.95 to -3.09), and, jointly with performance-based targets, 30-day readmissions (RD -0.43 pp, -0.65 to -0.22). Mortality effects varied by timepoint and intervention: short-term endpoints were largely non-significant, whereas 90-day mortality was reduced under centralization (RD -0.80 pp, -1.25 to -0.35) and 60-day mortality under MVR (RD -2.00 pp, -2.82 to -1.18). Survival was non-significant throughout. No study examined costs. CONCLUSION: The absence of cost evidence is a critical gap. Substantial heterogeneity reflects variation in reform design and context, underscoring the need to interpret findings by intervention and country conditions.

Functional constipation in pregnancy and its association with dietary intake and physical activity: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Functional constipation (FC) is a common complaint during pregnancy and has been reported to be associated with physical activity and dietary intake. However, previous studies have reported inconsistent findings. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the prevalence of FC and examine its association with physical activity and dietary intake among pregnant women. METHOD: In this cross-sectional study, 381 healthy pregnant women attending urban health centres in Tabriz, Iran, between January 2024 and February 2025, were selected using a multistage cluster sampling method. FC was diagnosed according to the Rome IV criteria. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). Multivariable Generalised Estimating Equations (GEE) analysis was performed to identify factors associated with FC. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of FC throughout pregnancy was 37%. In the first trimester, 41 out of 73 women (56%) had FC, while in the second trimester 53 out of 146 women (36%), and in the third trimester 47 out of 162 women (29%) were affected. Multivariate GEE indicated that both higher dietary fibre intake (aOR= 0.88, 95%CI 0.86-0.91, p&#x2009;<&#x2009;0.001) and higher fluid intake (aOR= 0.59, 95%CI 0.52-0.67, p&#x2009;<&#x2009;0.001) were associated with a reduced risk of FC. A normal BMI was associated with a lower risk of FC (aOR= 0.35, 95% CI 0.16-0.77, p&#x2009;=&#x2009;0.009), whereas, secondary education was associated with a higher risk (aOR= 2.81, 95%CI 1.33-5.95, p&#x2009;=&#x2009;0.007). Physical activity (aOR= 1.00; 95%CI 1.00 to 1.01; p&#x2009;=&#x2009;0.168), and other demographic characteristics (p&#x2009;>&#x2009;0.05) were not independently associated with FC after adjustment. CONCLUSION: FC is highly prevalent during pregnancy and may adversely affect women's quality of life. Higher dietary fibre and fluid intake were associated with lower odds of FC, highlighting the importance of healthy lifestyle behaviours during pregnancy. Prospective longitudinal studies are warranted to confirm these findings.

Comparative profiling of microbial community structure, enzyme potential, metabolic features, and volatile composition in craft and Jiafan Huangjiu processes.

Craft Huangjiu and Jiafan Huangjiu represent two distinct industrial Huangjiu product outcomes with contrasting volatile profiles. This study compared craft Huangjiu (L70) and Jiafan Huangjiu (L79) to characterize their physicochemical, microbial, gene-level functional, metabolic, and volatile features. Because L70 involved mid-fermentation addition of finished Huangjiu, this comparison was not intended to isolate the sole effect of fermentation interruption versus continued fermentation. L79 showed more extensive carbon and nitrogen utilization, with lower residual substrates and higher ethanol and acetic acid contents than L70, whereas L70 retained a less complete fermentation state. At the volatile level, GC-MS and volatile metabolomics consistently showed an ester-enriched profile in L79 and a more alcohol-dominant profile in L70. FlavorDB-based putative annotation and threshold-based OAV analysis further indicated distinct database-assigned descriptor distributions and potential odor-active compounds, with more OAV&#xa0;>&#xa0;1 ester-related compounds in L79. Metagenomic analysis showed that L70 was dominated by Lactobacillus acetotolerans, whereas L79 contained higher relative abundances of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Aspergillus oryzae, Aspergillus flavus, and Fructilactobacillus fructivorans. Metagenomic functional annotation showed higher representation of hydrolysis-related CAZy genes and ester-related enzyme annotations in L79. KEGG-based pathway mapping further indicated greater gene-level potential for ethanol-, acetate-, and acetyl-CoA-related metabolism in L79. Accordingly, the L70 profile should be interpreted as the integrated final-product outcome of process intervention, exogenous input, and subsequent fermentation. The findings provide a comparative basis for future flavor regulation and process optimization in Huangjiu and other fermented alcoholic beverages.

The value of international collaborations for supporting neuroanesthesia practice, education, and research in resource-constrained settings.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Neuroanesthesia practice in low- and middle-income countries is constrained by workforce shortages, limited infrastructure, and variability in clinical practice. Growing global interest in collaboration makes it timely to evaluate how international partnerships can address these gaps and improve equity in care, education, and research. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent literature highlights substantial variability in neuroanesthesia practice and limited access to context-appropriate guidelines and advanced technologies. International collaborations, including training partnerships, scholarship programs, and research networks, have improved knowledge exchange, workforce development, and the adoption of standardized practices. Evidence suggests that specialized training is associated with improved clinical outcomes. However, persistent inequities in research participation, authorship, and leadership, as well as concerns regarding sustainability and 'parachute research', remain. SUMMARY: International collaboration is a key strategy for advancing neuroanesthesia in resource-constrained settings. Sustainable, equitable partnerships that prioritize local ownership, capacity building, and contextual adaptation are essential to improving clinical practice, strengthening education, and enhancing global research representation.

Comparison of Ketamine and Pregabalin on Postoperative Opioid Usage and Pain Management in Spinal Fusion: Systematic Review and Network Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Spinal fusion is associated with substantial early postoperative pain and opioid exposure. Both ketamine and pregabalin are widely incorporated into Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols as opioid-sparing adjuncts. However, their comparative efficacy and safety in this specific setting remain uncertain. Our objective was to compare ketamine and pregabalin indirectly for early postoperative opioid consumption, pain, and adverse events in adults undergoing spinal fusion. METHODS: Pubmed, Embase, and Cochrane Trials were searched from inception through October 2025. Eligible studies were randomized trials enrolling adults undergoing instrumented spinal fusion, randomized to perioperative ketamine, pregabalin, or control, and reported extractable 24-hour opioid consumption or pain outcomes. Continuous outcomes were pooled as mean differences in MME or VAS units, and adverse events were reported descriptively. A connected treatment network was analyzed using random-effects models. Risk of bias (RoB) was assessed with the Cochrane RoB 2 tool. RESULTS: Thirteen trials (n=879) were included: ketamine (n=210), pregabalin (n=271), and control (n=398). Six trials contributed opioid data (3 ketamine, 3 pregabalin). Using pregabalin 150 mg as reference, ketamine was associated with lower 0-24-hour opioid use (MD -56.99 mg MME; 95% CI -99.56 to -14.43). Control (MD +21.31; 95% CI -1.05 to +43.66) and pregabalin 300 mg (MD -13.22; 95% CI -40.41 to +13.96) did not significantly differ from pregabalin 150 mg. Seven trials contributed 24-hour VAS data, with control being associated with higher pain versus pregabalin 150 mg (MD +0.84; 95% CI +0.01 to +1.66), while ketamine and pregabalin 300 mg were not k significantly different. Adverse events were generally infrequent and similar to control. CONCLUSIONS: Both ketamine and pregabalin provide early opioid sparing with comparable 24-hour analgesia. Ketamine showed a larger opioid-sparing point estimate, but indirect comparisons are imprecise. Adequately powered head-to-head trials with standardized protocols and adverse event reporting are needed.

Genome-wide identification and expression profiling of HSD3B and SDR42E1 genes in the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas): potential associations with gonadal development.

Sex steroids are lipid-soluble signaling molecules that regulate sex differentiation, reproductive development and physiological homeostasis in animals. 3&#x3b2;-Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase/&#x394;5-&#x394;4 isomerase (3&#x3b2;-HSD) is a key steroidogenic enzyme, whereas SDR42E1, an extended short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase, has been implicated in sterol- and steroid-related metabolism. However, the composition, evolutionary relationships and expression patterns of the HSD3B- and SDR42E1-related genes in bivalve gonadal development remain poorly characterized. In this study, five PF01073-containing genes, comprising three CgHsd3b and two CgSdr42e1 genes, were identified in the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas. Phylogenetic analysis separated the proteins into HSD3B-related and SDR42E1-related groups, and gene-structure and motif analyses indicated subfamily-level divergence. All five proteins retained the SDR domain but differed in exon-intron structure and motif composition. Each contained the extended-SDR TGxxGxxG motif, whereas exact classical [ST]GxxxGxG and NNAG motifs were absent. Tyr- and Lys-equivalent residues were conserved, while the HSD3B1 Ser-equivalent position contained Thr in two C. gigas proteins and Ser in one. These features support their classification as extended-SDR proteins but do not establish enzymatic activity or substrate specificity. The three CgHsd3b genes were dispersed on one chromosome, whereas CgSdr42e1-1 and CgSdr42e1-2 were adjacent on another chromosome, suggesting a possible local duplication event for the CgSdr42e1 pair. Public RNA-seq data showed distinct tissue- and gonadal-stage expression patterns, with several genes displaying gonad-biased or female-stage-associated expression. Independent RT-qPCR profiling of the representative genes CgHsd3b-3 and CgSdr42e1-1 detected stage-dependent expression, although tissue rankings differed from those in the public RNA-seq datasets. These differences may reflect the use of independent biological samples, tissue composition, normalization procedures, and platform-specific measurements. Because enzymatic assays, metabolite measurements, cellular localization, and functional perturbation were not performed, the results identify candidate genes whose expression is associated with gonadal development rather than demonstrating regulatory roles. This study provides a comparative framework for future functional investigation of sterol- and steroid-related metabolism in bivalves.

Studies on functional differentiation of xpr1a and xpr1b genes in zebrafish.

Xenotropic and polytropic retrovirus receptor 1 (XPR1) is known to be involved in various biological processes, including phosphate homeostasis, cellular signaling, brain and vascular mineralization, whereas its specific contribution to bone development remains incompletely characterized. Due to genome duplication in teleosts, zebrafish Danio rerio possess two paralogous genes of XPR1 namely xpr1a and xpr1b, whose functional divergence remains unclear. The amino acid sequence similarity between zebrafish xpr1a and xpr1b was 83.26%. In situ hybridization demonstrated overlapping localization in the head and spinal cord at 24-48 hpf, while diverged by 72 hpf, with xpr1a becoming restricted to the head while xpr1b persisted in both regions. CRISPR/Cas9 was used to generate xpr1a and xpr1b mutants. The xpr1a mutants are comparatively healthy, viable but with mild growth reduction, whereas the xpr1b mutants display high mortality, reduced body length and severe vertebral deformities. Interestingly, all the double mutants died at the embryonic stage. Moreover, to further investigate the molecular and regulatory mechanisms, we conducted comparative transcriptome analysis on bone and brain tissues from xpr1b+/+ and xpr1b-/- zebrafish. In bone tissue, 6749 DEGs were identified, comprising 3846 upregulated and 2903 downregulated genes. These DEGs were mainly enriched in the MAPK signaling pathway, Wnt signaling pathway, cysteine and methionine metabolism, and ECM-receptor interaction. RT-qPCR validated results showed that seven osteogenesis-related genes (col1a1a, sp7, runx2b, col1a2, col1a1b, alp1 and entpd5), and two phosphate homeostasis related genes (slc20a2 and pdgfba), which are essential for skeletal mineralization and phosphate homeostasis, exhibited significantly downregulated expression in bone tissue of xpr1b mutant zebrafish. These results highlight the pivotal role of xpr1b in regulating skeletal mineralization and phosphate metabolism, thereby elucidating the functional specialization of XPR1 paralogs while providing a theoretical basis for understanding bone developmental mechanism in teleost vertebrates.

Genome-wide analysis of the plant-specific PLATZ gene family in Taraxacum kok-saghyz and its roles in response to drought and salt tolerance.

Abiotic stress severely limits plant growth and productivity. Taraxacum kok-saghyz Rodin (TKS), known for its environmental resilience, represents a valuable resource for identifying stress-tolerant genes to improve stress-adaptive crops. Plant AT-rich protein and zinc-binding protein (PLATZ) transcription factors serve as core regulators of plant growth, developmental processes, and adaptive responses to various stress conditions; however, they remain uncharacterized in TKS. Here, we identified 10 TksPLATZ genes through a whole-genome analysis. Phylogenetically, these genes were grouped into five distinct evolutionary branches. Promoter sequence analysis revealed multiple types of cis-acting regulatory elements that are connected with hormonal signal responses and environmental stress adaptation. Integrated analysis of transcriptome datasets and RT-qPCR validation demonstrated that TksPLATZ genes display tissue-specific expression profiles and show distinct responsive patterns to drought and salt stress treatments. Among them, TksPLATZ1, TksPLATZ2 and TksPLATZ7 were markedly induced under both stressors and were selected for further functional study. We demonstrated that TksPLATZ1, TksPLATZ2 and TksPLATZ7 localize to the cell nucleus and act as transcriptional activators and repressors, respectively. Phenotypic data from overexpression experiments in plants confirm that heterologous expression of TksPLATZ1, TksPLATZ2, and TksPLATZ7 enhances the tolerance of Arabidopsis to salt and osmotic stress. These findings provide valuable genetic resources for improving plant tolerance to environmental stresses.

Global prevalence and associated factors of turnover intention among intensive care nurses: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the global prevalence of two distinct turnover intentions among intensive care unit (ICU) nurses-intention to leave the ICU and intention to leave the nursing profession-identify significant sources of heterogeneity, and synthesise associated psychosocial factors. METHODS: Ten databases were systematically searched from inception to September 28, 2025. Two reviewers independently conducted study selection, data extraction, and quality appraisal using Joanna Briggs Institute checklists. Random-effects meta-analyses were performed to estimate pooled prevalence and associated factors. Subgroup and meta-regression analyses explored potential sources of heterogeneity. Associated factors were pooled as odds ratios (ORs) and interpreted within an integrated Job Demands-Resources and Theory of Planned Behavior framework. RESULTS: Forty-six studies published between 2007 and 2025, involving 39,246 ICU nurses, were included. The pooled prevalence was 30.7% for intention to leave the ICU and 27.5% for intention to leave the nursing profession. Significant sources of heterogeneity included ICU type, geographic region, publication year, study design, measurement tool, and sampling method. Depression, burnout, high workload, and unsafe patient-to-nurse ratios were associated with increased turnover intention, whereas positive work environments, perceived organisational support, and nursing competence were protective factors. No significant publication bias was detected. CONCLUSIONS: Turnover intention affects approximately one-third of ICU nurses globally and varies across clinical and geographical contexts. Excessive workload, inadequate organisational support, and unfavourable work environments appear to be important contributors to turnover intention among ICU nurses. IMPLICATIONS FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE: Strategies to reduce turnover intention among ICU nurses should focus on reducing excessive workload, improving staffing conditions, strengthening organisational support, and fostering positive work environments. Promoting supportive and sustainable ICU work environments may help improve nurse retention and maintain the quality of critical care services.
