Long-term changes in leisure time walking, moderate and vigorous exercise: were they influenced by the National Physical Activity Guidelines?

Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics three cross-sectional National Health Surveys, conducted in 1989-1990, 1995-1996 and 2000, were used to examine long-term population responses to the 1996 physical activity (PA) recommendations. Past 2-week recall of the number of times and total minutes spent walking for recreation or sport, and doing moderate and vigorous exercise, were averaged for 1 week to create a measure of 'sufficiently active': >or=5 weekly sessions of >or=150 min/week of at least moderate-intensity activity. With the exception of adults aged>60 years, from 1989 to 2000, there were increases in the prevalence of walking (+8%) and in moderate-intensity exercise (+4%), resulting in a significant decline (-6%) in the proportion of those reporting no leisure-time exercise. Participation in vigorous exercise remained unchanged. There was a 'population shift' in median minutes and sessions of walking from 1995 to 2000, but the prevalence of regular walking (>or=5 times and >or=150 min/week) remained unchanged. A small but significant increase (+2%) in the proportion of adults who met the PA recommendations was noted mainly for men under 60 years and for women aged 45-59 years. The proportion meeting the PA recommendations declined significantly in the most socioeconomically disadvantaged area. These data provide evidence contrary to the observed declines in PA documented by the Active Australia surveillance in the late 1990s. The population may have responded to the 1996 concept of moderate-intensity exercise mainly by walking, but sustainable promotional efforts will be required to build on these gains in the forthcoming decades.

The relationships of vigorous exercise, alcohol, and adiposity to low and high high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels.

While vigorous exercise, alcohol, and weight loss are all known to increase high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), it is not known whether these interventions increase low HDL as effectively as has been demonstrated for normal HDL. This report tests the hypothesis that there may be differences in the calculated response of men and women with low versus high HDL-C to exercise, alcohol, and weight loss across the spectrum of HDL-C levels. Physican-supplied medical data from 7,288 men and 2,326 women were divided into deciles of self-reported vigorous exercise, alcohol intake, body mass index (BMI), or body circumferences. Within each decile we determined the percentiles of the HDL distributions and average running distance, alcohol intake, BMI, or body circumference. Simple least-squares regression analysis was then used to estimate the slope for kth HDL percentile (k = 5%, 6%, ...,95%) versus running distance, alcohol intake, BMI, or body circumference across deciles. Bootstrap resampling was used to estimate standard errors and statistical significance for the regression lines. In both sexes, the increase in HDL-C per unit alcohol intake was at least twice as great at the 95th as at the 5th percentile of the HDL distribution. There was also a significant graded increase from the 5th to the 95th HDL percentile for the slopes relating HDL to exercise (km run) and alcohol intake. Men's HDL-C declined in association with fatness (BMI, waist, and chest circumference) more sharply at the 95th than at the 5th percentile of the HDL distribution. The results of this study suggest that the effects of physical activity, alcohol, and weight reduction on HDL-C levels may be, to a large extent, dependent on the initial level with the greatest improvement achieved in subjects with high HDL and the least improvement in those having low HDL-C levels.

Vigor of visceromotor responses to urinary bladder distension in rats increases with repeated trials and stimulus intensity.

This methodological study characterized visceromotor responses (VMRs) as abdominal contractile responses to urinary bladder distension (UBD) in the female rat. Electromyographic activity of the abdominal musculature was used as a measure of the VMR. Similar to previously characterized cardiovascular responses to UBD, VMRs to UBD demonstrated an initial sensitization period whereby repeated presentation of UBD stimuli led to increase vigor of the VMR. Graded UBD produced graded VMRs, therefore stimulus-response functions could be constructed. The intravenous administration of the opioid fentanyl produced a reduced vigor of the VMR in a fashion consistent with its analgesic effect. The present report supports the utility of this model for studies of urinary bladder nociception.

Genetic and QTL analysis for low-temperature vigor of germination in rice.

The quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for low-temperature vigor of germination (LVG) with a germination period of 7 d, 11 d, 14 d, and 17 d at 14 degrees C was identified using F(2:3) population, which included 200 individuals and lines derived from a cross of indica and japonica "Milyang 23/Jileng 1" with microsatellite markers. The correlation coefficient between LVG and other cold tolerance traits was analyzed. LVG and the cold response index for vigor of germination (CIVG) detected when the germination period was 7 d showed a continuous distribution, which was partial to lower LVG and lower CIVG in F(3) lines. LVG and CIVG detected when the germination periods were 11 d, 14 d, and 17 d showed a continuous distribution near normal, which were quantitative traits controlled by multiple genes. LVG detected when the germination period was 14 d was more correlated with other cold tolerance traits than LVG detected when the germination periods were 7 d, 11 d, and 17 d, which was significantly associated with cold tolerance during the bud bursting period, the seedling stage, the booting stage, and the growing ability under cold conditions. qLVG2 located in RM29-RM262 on chromosome 2, qLVG7-2 and qCIVG7-2 located in RM336-RM118 on chromosome 7 were detected when the germination periods were 11 d, 14 d, and 17 d. qCIVG2 located in RM29-RM262 on chromosome 2 was detected when the germination periods were 11 d and 14 d. The variation is due to the observed phenotypic variation by the above QTLs, which was increased following the germination. The variation of qLVG2 related to LVG was increased from 6.9% to 14.2%. The variation of qLVG7-2 associated with LVG was increased from 9.9% to 11.2%. The variation of qCIVG2 correlated with CIVG was increased from 6.3% to 9.0%. The variation of qCIVG7-2 associated with CIVG was increased from 8.3% to 12.9%. These QTL alleles were obtained from the tolerant parent Jileng 1, and the gene action was most likely to be partially dominant.

A vigorous virus-specific CD4+ T cell response may contribute to the association of HLA-DR13 with viral clearance in hepatitis B.

A strong virus-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocyte response to hepatitis B virus (HBV) has been associated with viral clearance, but little is known about factors determining the individual's ability to mount such a T cell response. Recently a strong association between the HLA class II allele DR13 and a self-limited course of HBV infection has been described. In the present study of 33 patients with acute hepatitis B we show that individuals carrying HLA-DR13 mount a more vigorous CD4+ T cell response to HBV core (5706 ct/min (25th/75th percentile 3239 ct/min; 10,552 ct/min)) than patients without HLA-DR 13 (1365 ct/min (490 ct/min; 5334 ct/min); P = 0.006). However, peptide epitopes aa 50-69, aa 61-85, and aa 81-105 were recognized most frequently by both patient groups. Moreover, among 14 HBV core-specific CD4+ T cell clones from two patients with HLA-DR13, only one T cell clone was HLA-DR13-restricted. Our data suggest that the beneficial effect of the HLA-DR13 alleles on the outcome of HBV infection could be explained by a more vigorous HBV core-specific CD4+ T cell response, which may either be due to more proficient antigen presentation by the HLA-DR13 molecules themselves or a linked polymorphism in a neighbouring immunoregulatory gene.

Oestrogen-induced vigorous mounting in female rats carrying hypothalamic knife cuts.

In ovariectomized Wistar rats, 1- or 2-mm wide knife cuts were placed in a coronal plane from the surface of the cortex to the floor of the cranial cavity to interrupt posterior efferents of the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus (VMN). Sham-operated females had the same knife lowered to a depth of 7 mm. Ovariectomized nonoperated females were also used. After recovery, all rats received a single injection of 2 microg oestradiol benzoate, and were tested 48 h later for male and female sexual behaviour and partner preference. When placed with highly receptive stimulus females, the rats with the 2-mm cut showed a significantly higher incidence of mounting with ejaculatory thrusts than any other groups. When placed with stud males, 1-mm cut, as well as sham-operated females, had increased lordosis quotients. Similarly, both 1-mm and 2-mm cuts and sham operation enhanced the incidence of ear wiggling. Despite the display of a transsexual behaviour (i.e. vigorous mounting), all females with the cut showed heterosexual partner preference. Thus, the cut in the present study removed the inhibitory neural effect on mounting, which presumably descends from the VMN. In the absence of this inhibition, minute amounts of oestrogen sufficed to induce vigorous mounting. Sham operation in the present study appeared to interfere with certain inhibitory neural circuitry for lordosis.

Less vigorous surgery for second primary lung cancer.

BACKGROUND: Patients with second primary lung cancer (SPLC) have a heterogeneous background. The optimum modality of treatment for SPLC patients has not yet been determined. The objective of this study was to attempt to identify the value of less vigorous therapies such as segmentectomy or video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) in SPLC. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 46 patients who underwent resection for SPLC in Fukuoka University Hospital between January 1994 and April 2005. Patients were separated into two groups (LVT: less vigorous therapy including segmentectomy or VATS lobectomy; LCT: lobectomy with conventional thoracotomy). The characteristics of each group were evaluated and survival rates were analyzed at 5 years after surgery. RESULTS: The mean amount of blood loss was found to be significantly different ( P = 0.0062) with 59.44 +/- 14.00 ml for LVT cases and 254.48 +/- 63.62 ml for LCT. None of the LVT patients experienced postoperative complications. The 5-year survival rate was 62.7 % for LVT and 57.7 % for LCT. There was no significant difference in survival rates between these groups. CONCLUSIONS: Although differences were seen in the characteristics, less invasive surgery such as VATS or segmentectomy may be a feasible treatment for SPLC.

Heat production and storage are positively correlated with measures of body size/composition and heart rate drift during vigorous running.

The purposes of this study were to determine the relationships between: (a) measures of body size/composition and heat production/storage, and (b) heat production/storage and heart rate (HR) drift during running at 95% of the velocity that elicited lactate threshold, which was determined for 20 healthy recreational male runners. Subsequently, changes in skin and tympanic temperatures associated with a vigorous 20-min run, HR, and VO2 data were recorded. It was found that heat production was significantly correlated with body mass (r = .687), lean mass (r = .749), and body surface area (BSA, r = .699). Heat storage was significantly correlated with body mass (r = .519), fat mass (r = .464), and BSA (r = .498). The percentage of produced heat stored was significantly correlated with body mass (r = .427), fat mass (r = .455), and BSA (r = .414). Regression analysis showed that the sum of body mass, percentage of body fat, BSA, lean mass, and fat mass accounted for 30% of the variability in heat storage. It was also found that HR drift was significantly correlated with heat storage (r = .383), percentage of produced heat stored (r = .433), and core temperature change (r = .450). It was concluded that heavier runners experienced greater heat production, heat storage, and core temperature increases than lighter runners during vigorous running.

Effects of a vigorous walking program on body composition, and carbohydrate and lipid metabolism of obese young men.

With no attempt made to influence their diet, six sedentary obese men ages 19 to 31 completed 16 weeks of vigorous walking 90 min, 5 days/week, on a treadmill at up to 3.2 mph on a 10% grade, expending about 1100 kcal per session. Body composition studies indicated a loss of 5.9 kg of body fat and a gain of 0.2 kg of lean tissue for a net loss of 5.7 kg. Percentage body fat decreased from 23.3 to 17.4. Monitored food intake initially increased, then progressively decreased below pretraining levels. Work capacity and cardiovascular efficiency improved with training. Plasma cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations were not significantly changed; however, high density lipoprotein cholesterol progressively increased to 15.6% above pretraining levels and the high/low density lipoprotein ratio increased 25.9%. Fasting blood sugar was significantly lower after training. Blood glucose concentrations after a glucose challenge did not significantly change, but a 43% reduction in plasma radioimmunoassay insulin levels and a 36% decrease in the ratio of insulin/glucose concentration occurred. Thus, vigorous regular walking resulted in a reduction of body fate stores, endogenous insulin requirements, and food intake, and perhaps improved the ability to eliminate cholestrol by increasing the plasma high density lipoprotein fraction.

Vigorous prostatic massage: a simple method to retrieve spermatozoa for intracytoplasmic sperm injection in psychogenic anejaculation: case report.

A simple, non-invasive method to retrieve spermatozoa from patients with anejaculation is described. Three patients with psychogenic primary anejaculation were referred for intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). On the day of oocyte retrieval, vigorous prostatic massage was done. Examination of the expressed prostatic secretion revealed a sufficient number of motile spermatozoa in cases 1 and 3. In case 1, only one poor quality oocyte was obtained and ICSI was unsuccessful. Spermatozoa were cryopreserved for future use. In case 2, no spermatozoa were retrieved by prostatic massage. A testicular biopsy was performed to retrieve spermatozoa for ICSI. Unfortunately no pregnancy resulted. In case 3, retrieved spermatozoa were successfully used for ICSI, and 19 ova were injected. Fertilization occurred in 10 of these; seven were cryopreserved and three embryos were transferred. Ultrasound scan has confirmed a singleton pregnancy, which is ongoing. We conclude that vigorous prostatic massage could be an effective method of sperm retrieval for assisted conception in selected patients with anejaculation.

Associations of light, moderate, and vigorous intensity physical activity with longevity. The Harvard Alumni Health Study.

Physical activity is associated with better health; however, the optimal intensity of activity remains unclear. A total of 13,485 men (mean age, 57.5 years) from the Harvard Alumni Health Study reported their walking, stair climbing, and sports/recreation in 1977. Between 1977 and 1992, 2,539 died. After adjusting for the different activity components, distance walked and storeys climbed independently predicted longevity (p, trend = 0.004 and <0.001, respectively). Light activities (<4 multiples of resting metabolic rate (METs)) were not associated with reduced mortality rates, moderate activities (4-<6 METs) appeared somewhat beneficial, and vigorous activities (> or =6 METs) clearly predicted lower mortality rates (p, trend = 0.72, 0.07, and <0.001, respectively). These data provide some support for current recommendations that emphasize moderate intensity activity; they also clearly indicate a benefit of vigorous activity.

Variation in lateral shoot elongation patterns and hybrid vigor in full-sib families and interspecific hybrids of larch.

Time of shoot initiation and cessation, and rate and duration of lateral shoot elongation of full-sib families of Larix decidua Mill., L. laricina (Du Roi) C. Koch, and interspecific hybrids between L. decidua and L. kaempferi (Lamb.) Carrière, L. kaempferi x decidua, L. laricina x decidua, and L. laricina x kaempferi were explored in relation to hybrid vigor determined by height growth after 5 years. Height growth of L. laricina and L. decidua families was significantly less than height growth of the interspecific hybrids. Differences were observed for all lateral shoot elongation traits among L. laricina, L. decidua, and the interspecific hybrids. Lateral shoots of L. laricina families were the first to both initiate and cease elongation, and grew for the shortest period of time. Overall, the length of the shoot elongation period and date of cessation of shoot growth were significantly correlated with total height growth after 5 years, but the time of shoot initiation was not. Rate of elongation of lateral shoots was strongly correlated with growth increment in 1996, but was weakly correlated with total height growth after 5 years. Hybrid vigor in Larix seems to be partly a function of late cessation or increased duration of shoot elongation, or both.

The effect of vigorous fluid resuscitation in uncontrolled hemorrhagic shock after massive splenic injury.

OBJECTIVE: Using a standardized massive splenic injury model of uncontrolled hemorrhagic shock, we studied the effect of vigorous fluid resuscitation on the hemodynamic response and survival time in rats. DESIGN: Randomized, controlled study. Duration of follow-up was 4 hrs. SETTING: University research laboratory. SUBJECTS: Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats, weighing 240-430 g. INTERVENTIONS: Standardized massive splenic injury was induced by two transverse incisions in the rat's spleen. The animals were randomized into four groups: group 1 (n = 8) underwent sham operation; in group 2 (n = 15), massive splenic injury was untreated; in group 3 (n = 15), massive splenic injury was treated with 41.5 mL/kg 0.9% sodium chloride (large-volume normal saline); and in group 4 (n = 15), massive splenic injury was treated with 5 mL/kg 7.5% sodium chloride (hypertonic saline). MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: The hemodynamic and metabolic variables in the sham-operated group 1 were stable throughout the experiment. Mean arterial pressure in group 2 decreased from 86.5 +/- 4.0 to 50.3 +/- 6.3 mm Hg (p < .001) in the first 15 mins after massive splenic injury. Mean survival time in group 2 was 127.5 +/- 17.0 mins; total blood loss was 33.8% +/-2.6% of blood volume; and the mortality rate at 1 hr was 13.3%. Bolus infusion of large-volume normal saline after 15 mins resulted in an early increase in mean arterial pressure from 48.6 +/-7.4 to 83.3 +/- 7.2 mm Hg (p < .01); it then rapidly decreased to 24.6 +/- 8.6 mm Hg (p < .001) after 60 mins. The mean survival time (95.3 +/- 16.4 mins) was significantly lower than in group 2 (p < .01); total blood loss (48.0% +/- 4.3%) was significantly higher than in group 2 (p < .01); and mortality rate in the first hour was 33.3% (p < .05). Bolus infusion of hypertonic saline also decreased survival time to 93.3 +/- 20.3 mins (p < .01), but total blood loss was 35.2% +/- 3.0%, which was not significantly different from the blood loss in group 2. The mortality rate in the first hour (60.0%) was significantly higher than in group 2 (p < .005). CONCLUSIONS: Vigorous infusion of normal saline after massive splenic injury resulted in a significant increase in intra-abdominal bleeding and decreased survival time. The hemodynamic response to crystalloid infusion in blunt abdominal trauma is primarily dependent on the severity of injury and the rate of blood loss.

Is sleep disturbed by vigorous late-night exercise?

PURPOSE: This experiment examined the influence of prolonged, vigorous late-night exercise on sleep. METHODS: Sixteen highly fit male cyclists completed each of two 60-h laboratory treatments involving a baseline night, an experimental treatment night, and a recovery night. In counterbalanced order, subjects 1) cycled for 3 h at 65-75% of heart rate reserve combined with bright light exposure (3000 lux) light, and 2) were exposed to a 3 h pulse of bright light (3000 lux) alone. RESULTS: On the baseline and recovery nights, subjects maintained their usual sleep-wake schedules. On the treatment night, exercise + bright light or bright light alone were centered at 6 h before their usual wake times, followed by bedtimes 30 min after the treatments. Illumination was 3000 lux during the experimental treatments, 0 lux during the sleep periods, and 50 lux at other times. Sleep was assessed with an Actillume (Ambulatory Monitoring, Inc., Ardsley, NY) wrist monitor to define sleep onset latency (SOL), wakefulness after sleep onset (WASO), and total sleep time. Subjective assessments of SOL, WASO, and insomnia were also gathered each morning. No significant differences in objective or subjective sleep variables were found between treatments. CONCLUSIONS: These data are inconsistent with the general opinion that vigorous exercise shortly before bedtime disturbs sleep.

The association between vigorous physical activities and fat deposition in male adolescents.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between participation in vigorous physical activities (VPA) and indicators of adiposity and fat distribution in male adolescents. METHODS: Subjects were classified on the basis of the number of reported 15-min periods over 3 d during which VPA were performed. RESULTS: Body weight, fat mass, body mass index, sum of six subcutaneous skinfolds, trunk and extremity skinfolds, and trunk to extremity skinfolds ratio (T/E ratio) were all significantly and inversely related to a higher VPA participation. Moreover, T/E ratio was significantly lower in the subgroup reporting a mean of 7.8 15-min periods of activity for 3 d (equivalent to a mean of 39 min x d(-1)) compared with subjects reporting no participation. This decrease in T/E ratio was more pronounced in subjects reporting a mean of 13.6 15-min periods of VPA for 3 d. CONCLUSION: These observations reinforce the idea that excess abdominal fat accumulation can be prevented by regular participation in vigorous physical activities.

Dependence of Seed Vigor during Germination on Carbohydrate Source in Endosperm Mutants of Maize.

Differences in seed vigor of four genotypes of maize (Zea mays L.), brittle-1 (bt1), shrunken-2 (sh2), sugary (su), and normal, in an isogenic background, were investigated. Excised whole embryos and axes were grown on Murashige and Skoog (MS) media containing various carbohydrate sources. Of the four genotypes examined, sh2 seeds had the lowest vigor, especially under germination stress conditions. Embryo dry weights of sh2 were less than su and normal but equal to bt1 and made up nearly 25% of the whole seed weight. The sh2 seeds and whole embryos had low starch levels compared with the other three genotypes. Sugar levels were comparable in the three endosperm mutants, which were two times higher than normal. Optimum growth of excised embryos of all genotypes was obtained on MS medium containing 5% sucrose. However, this concentration did not totally overcome poor germination and growth of sh2 embryos and axes. Axes of su and normal had greater growth rates than sh2 and bt1 on sucrose-free medium, although the difference between genotypes decreased when whole embryos were used. When ground endosperm was employed as the carbohydrate source, sh2 embryos germinated and grew poorly, particularly on normal endosperm. With a commercial corn starch as the carbohydrate source, sh2 germlings were shorter in length and displayed a greater loss in dry weight than the other genotypes. The poor growth of sh2 embryos on ground endosperm and starch media may indicate a dysfunction of the scutellum or axis in relation to carbohydrate metabolism and utilization.

The effect of vigorous physical activity at work on serum lipids with a special reference to serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol.

Serum lipid concentrations of lumberjacks whose occupational physical activity is most vigorous were compared with those of electricians. The lumberjacks had significantly higher serum HDL-cholesterol and significantly lower triglyceride and free fatty acid concentrations but there were no significant differences in total cholesterol levels. The favourable effect of vigorous physical activity at work on lipid metabolism is, however, epidemiologically not seen, obviously due to negative risk factors in lumberjacks' life.

Induction of vigorous cytotoxic T-lymphocyte responses by live attenuated simian immunodeficiency virus.

Although live attenuated vaccine strains of simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) have proven highly effective in protecting macaques against challenge with pathogenic SIV strains, little is known about the mechanisms of protective immunity induced by these vaccines. We examined cytotoxic T-lymphocyte (CTL) responses against SIV in animals infected with SIVmac239delta nef (deficient in nef) or SIVmac239delta 3 (deficient in nef, vpr, and upstream sequences in U3). To enhance detection of SIV-specific CTL activity, we stimulated peripheral blood mononuclear cells with autologous B-lymphoblastoid cell lines which had been infected with recombinant vaccinia viruses expressing SIV proteins and subsequently inactivated with psoralen and UV light. Animals chronically infected with SIV239delta nef or SIV239delta 3 mounted vigorous CTL responses against the SIV Gag and Env proteins. This CTL activity was major histocompatibility class restricted and mediated by CD8+ T lymphocytes. CTL responses persisted at relatively high levels for more than 6 years after infection. Limiting dilution precursor frequency assays demonstrated that the frequency of SIV-specific CTLs was as high as 234 CTL precursors per 100,000 cells. Animals acutely infected with SIV239delta nef developed CTL activity by day 14 after infection, coincident with decreases in viral load. Animals acutely infected with SIV239delta 3 developed CTL responses within 4 weeks of infection. Thus, vaccination of juvenile or adult animals with SIV239delta nef or SIV239delta 3 results in the induction of a vigorous CTL response which arises early in the course of infection and persists for years after a single inoculation of virus.
