Father-son incest: a case report.

A case of father-son incest is presented. There were three sexual involvements over a period of 6 weeks that ranged in activity from genital fondling to anal penetration. The father was the initiator of the activity and was drunk during each of the episodes. The son passively submitted while the mother denied the activity when told about it after the first episode. The marital situation had deteriorated over the years to an almost complete breakdown of communication. The father had been struggling with latent homosexuality for a long time, and the alcohol triggered the incidents. There was no evidence of any special relationship between father and son, except for the acting-out behavior and the challenging of parental authority by this particular son. Short term, behavior-oriented marital sessions helped to improve the situation at home.

The SON gene encodes a conserved DNA binding protein mapping to human chromosome 21.

We report the identification and characterization of a clone for the DNA binding protein SON, which we have isolated from a human keratinocyte cDNA library. Using this clone we have found that the SON gene is expressed in different cell types and that homologous sequences can be detected in vertebrate and insect genomic DNA. Using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to amplify SON sequences from a panel of somatic cell hybrids we have assigned the gene encoding human SON to chromosome 21. By use of hybrids containing regions of chromosome 21 the localization has been refined to 21q 22.1-q22.2.

Specific cognitive impairment in sons of early onset alcoholics.

Cognitive and behavioral functioning in school-aged sons of early onset alcoholics, late onset alcoholics, normal social drinking fathers, and depressed fathers were compared on a battery of neuropsychological measures. Sons of early onset alcoholics performed more poorly than offspring of the normal fathers on tests measuring attention and verbal intellectual capacity, but were not significantly different from sons of late onset alcoholic fathers. Sons of normal and late onset alcoholics were not distinguishable from each other.

Mother-son incest as a defence against psychosis.

In the following, a case of mother-adult son incest is described and explained from a psychoanalytical viewpoint. Two theories are put forward: (a) Mother-son incest may occur as a defence against psychosis, and (b) the incest represents an unconscious search for triangulation, a process in which external authorities (such as, for example, a court of law) may function as surrogates for persons who have been missed in the pre-oedipal past. It is therefore possible to understand mother-son incest symbolically as an indicator of pre-oedipal needs of the son and of the mother's longing for the absent partner. The incest is, however, not only a cry for help; it is also to be regarded as an attempt to solve the problem for both people involved. Looked at in this way, new ways of understanding and new possibilities for therapy emerge.

Male microchimerism in women with systemic sclerosis and healthy women who have never given birth to a son.

BACKGROUND: Male DNA or cells are often used to measure microchimerism in a woman. In studies of autoimmune diseases male microchimerism is most often attributed to the previous birth of a son. OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency of male microchimerism in healthy women or women with systemic sclerosis who had never given birth to a son. METHODS: Real time quantitative polymerase chain reaction targeting the Y chromosome specific sequence DYS14 was employed to test DNA extracted from peripheral blood mononuclear cells of 26 women with systemic sclerosis and 23 healthy women who had never given birth to a son. RESULTS: are expressed as the genome equivalent number of male cells per million host cells (gEq/mil).Results: Male DNA was found in 15% of women with systemic sclerosis (range 0 to 23.7 gEq/mil) and in 13% of healthy women (range 0 to 5.1 gEq/mil). Although two women with male DNA had an induced abortion, most had no history of spontaneous or induced abortion (either systemic sclerosis or healthy). CONCLUSIONS: Microchimerism with male DNA can be found in the circulation of women who have never given birth to a son. Thus sources other than a male birth must be considered when male DNA is used to measure microchimerism. Although other studies are needed, there was no apparent difference in women with systemic sclerosis and healthy women. Possible sources of male DNA include unrecognised male pregnancy or unrecognised male twin, an older male sibling with transfer through the maternal circulation, or sexual intercourse alone.

Father-son testicular cancer, case report.

A case of familial testicular malignancy in a father and his son is reported. This represents the seventh described case of father-son testicular cancer. The father had seminoma and the son had teratocarcinoma. Both patients' peripheral blood lymphocytes were tested for 52 HLA specificities: the father's antigens were HLA A3, B13, B14, Cw6, Cw8 and the son's were HLA A2, A3, B14, Cw8. (Common haplotype: A3, B14, Cw8). The association between HLA antigens and testicular cancer is discussed.

Cryptorchidism and hypospadias in sons of gardeners and farmers.

Cryptorchidism and hypospadias have been related to prenatal estrogen exposure in animal models. Some chemicals used in farming and gardening have been shown to possess estrogenic and other hormone-disrupting effects. Earlier studies have indicated increased risks of urogenital malformations in the sons of pesticide appliers. In the present study, parental occupation in the farming and gardening industry among 6,177 cases of cryptorchidism, 1,345 cases of hypospadias, and 23,273 controls, born live from 1983 to 1992 in Denmark, was investigated in a register-based case-control study. A significantly increased risk of cryptorchidism but not hypospadias was found in sons of women working in gardening (adjusted odds ratio = 1.67; 95% confidence interval, 1.14-2.47). The risks were not increased in sons of men working in farming or gardening. The increased risk of cryptorchidism among sons of female gardeners could suggest an association with prenatal exposure to occupationally related chemicals.

Personality characteristics of sons of alcohol abusers.

Studies of personality characteristics of sons of alcohol abusers who are at high risk for alcoholism have yielded equivocal results. Although differences in personality attributes have been identified in clinical samples, similar differences have not been found in nonclinical samples, raising the possibility that these dispositional differences do not characterize the majority of offspring of alcoholics. This study investigated personality characteristics of sons of alcohol abusers (n = 199) and controls (n = 601) in a nonclinical sample of college-aged men. Analyses revealed that scores of sons of alcohol abusers differed significantly from controls on all 10 Clinical scales and 7 of 13 Wiggins Content scales of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory. Replicating earlier studies with clinically identified male offspring of alcoholics, these results show that parental alcohol abuse is related to reliable but relatively small elevations of MMPI personality profiles in well-functioning sons of alcohol abusers.

Imitation in the family: a study of older parents and their adult sons.

Older parents and their adult sons (fifteen father-mother-son triads) participated in this study which investigated whether imitative behavior is prominent in these families and whether interpersonal perceptions are related to the degree of imitation. Both perceptual and moral imitation tasks were used and personality descriptions were obtained on dimensions of activity, potency, and evaluation. Adult sons were found to imitate their parents on both tasks and particularly their fathers on moral issues. Older parents also were found to imitate their sons in a possible "reversal" of the direction of identification. Differential patterns of interpersonal perceptions were related to imitation for the three groups. Potential theoretical explanations are discussed.

Son preference and sex composition of children: evidence from India.

Although the effect of son preference on sex composition of children ever born is undetectable in national-level estimates that aggregate across all families, this article provides empirical evidence from India that son preference has two pronounced and predictable family-level effects on the sex composition of children ever born. First, data from India show that smaller families have a significantly higher proportion of sons than larger families. Second, socially and economically disadvantaged couples and couples from the northern region of India not only want but also attain a higher proportion of sons, if the effects of family size are controlled.

Developmental trajectories of disruptive behavior problems among sons of alcoholics: effects of parent psychopathology, family conflict, and child undercontrol.

This study examined trajectories of disruptive behavior problems from preschool to early adolescence in 302 boys from a community-recruited sample of high-risk families. Growth modeling showed that paternal alcoholism was associated with elevated levels of sons' disruptive behavior problems. Family conflict predicted more disruptive behaviors at school entry and a slower rate of decline in such problems. Parent antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) exacerbated the effects of high preschool levels of sons' undercontrol on level of disruptive behaviors at school entry; this effect became progressively stronger across time. Low levels of undercontrol protected sons of ASPD parents from experiencing heightened levels of disruptive behaviors both at school entry and increasingly as sons grew older. Implications for subsequent maladjustment are discussed.

[The human son gene: the large and small transcripts contains various 5'-terminal sequences].

Human son gene was previously identified by cloning and hybridization to GC-rich rat genomic fragment. After several cycles of human placenta library walking we were able to identify and clone two alternative transcripts of this gene. Recently we have determined nucleotide sequence of small son gene transcript, coding region of which contains four areas of complete tandem repeats. Here we report the structure of the part (2.9 kb) of large transcript of son gene from close to its 5'-end to the end of sequence, unique for this transcript. Comparison of nucleotide sequences of two transcripts indicates that they have common 3'-ends and, probably, arise from alternative splicing. 5' proximal part of large transcript contains two areas of complete tandem repeats not present in small transcript. Results of analysis of this area support our model for forming son gene tandem repeats structure by duplication, mutation and natural selection at the protein level.

[An analysis of genetic transmission in a father and son with osteosarcoma].

Familial osteosarcoma is a rare hereditary disease. We present a 37-year-old father and a 17-year-old son who developed osteosarcoma in the left and right distal femurs, respectively, at a three-year interval. They were treated with chemotherapy followed by surgery. Both had positive immunostaining for p53 tumor suppressor gene and HER-2/neu oncogene. The son also exhibited deletion of the retinoblastoma 1 gene. Pulmonary metastasis was detected in the father at the time of diagnosis and 13 months after primary treatment, whereas no distant metastasis was present in the child. The father died 39 months after the diagnosis from primary symptoms, but the son led a disease-free survival a year after completion of treatment. Genetic abnormalities documented in the father and son corroborate the presence of specific genetic alterations in the pathogenesis of osteosarcoma.

Collaboration between therapists in the simultaneous treatments of a father and son with disorders of masculine identity formation.

A chronically depressed, middle-aged man with numerous intermittent psychotherapies since adolescence, sought treatment for difficulties provoked by his corrupt, former boss. Because of inadequate fathering, he had been unable to consolidate his identity as a man and a father, which inhibited the development of masculine and paternal identity in his oldest son. This patient enacted and worked through massive resistance to experiencing the idealized, paternal transference so lacking in his relationship with his own father; thereby enhancing his son's development and aiding his own separation from his mother and his wife. But this upset the family equilibrium and angered the wife, as she could no longer protect and control her husband and son, thereby enacting her transference to her alcoholic father. The psychotherapists' close collaboration helped elucidate this family's complex, interwoven psychopathology. Simultaneous treatment with collaboration thus contributed to the separation and individuation of father, mother, and son and facilitated later resolution of their oedipal conflicts.

Mothers' perceptions of the behavior and problem-solving skills of their developmentally delayed sons.

Mothers of 17 developmentally delayed preschool boys and 17 age-matched control boys were asked to predict how well their sons would score on the Preschool Embedded Figures Test, to estimate "the average child's" score on the test, and to evaluate their son's attentiveness and cooperation during testing. Mothers of delayed boys were found to hold an idealized view of "the average child's" problem-solving skills, were significantly less accurate than were mothers of control boys in predicting their sons' level of performance, and tended to rate their sons as less cooperative and attentive than the boys were rated by an independent observer. The impact of such distortions in maternal perceptions and expectations were discussed.

Neuropsychological differences between sons of active alcoholic and non-alcoholic fathers.

Ten- to fourteen-year-old sons of active alcoholic fathers (n = 59) with a positive family history of alcoholism (AFH+) and sons of social drinker fathers (n = 58) with a negative family history of alcoholism (NFH-) were administered a battery of neuropsychological tasks. Areas of cognitive function which were assessed were memory, visuospatial and attentional abilities and, in addition, motor skills and general intellectual functioning. MANOVAs conducted on these measures showed that sons of active alcoholic fathers' performance on the more difficult visuospatial and memory tasks as well as on an attentional test was reduced relative to sons of non-alcoholic fathers.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder associated with orbitofrontal epilepsy in a father and a son.

The authors report on a father and son with frontal lobe epilepsy and symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Attention deficit hyperactivity is a syndrome defined by criteria that include inattention, impulsive behavior, impaired concentration and motor restlessness. It does not require medical or neurobehavioral evaluation to determine an underlying etiology. The father is a 45-year-old man evaluated for possible ADHD. His referral came after the diagnosis of ADHD in his 6-year-old son who responded well to treatment with methylphenidate HCL. Neurobehavioral evaluation of the father suggested frontal lobe dysfunction. Magnetic resonance imaging and electroencephalography (EEG) were normal. Brain 99mTc HMPAO single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) revealed left orbitofrontal hypoperfusion. Additional history from his wife revealed episodic symptoms suggestive of nonconvulsive epilepsy that included nonresponsive staring, complex automatic behavior, and amnesic lacunas. Treatment of the father with carbmazepine produced dramatic improvement. Subsequent evaluation of his son, currently on maintenance treatment with methylphenidate HCL for ADHD, elicited a history consistent with atonic and simple motor partial epilepsy. The son's brain SPECT revealed bilateral orbitofrontal hypoperfusion defects. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a syndrome that may be caused by frontal lobe lesions or epilepsy. In the setting of possible ADHD, neurological evaluation is warranted. Although overreliance on structural imaging or EEG in such an evaluation must be discouraged, brain SPECT may be useful to evaluate patients with symptoms of attention disorders for frontal epilepsy.

Influence of son preference on the contraceptive use and fertility of Sri Lankan women.

The effect of moderate son preference on family size is analysed using data from the 1982 Sri Lanka Contraceptive Prevalence Survey whose respondents were followed-up in the 1985 Sri Lanka Contraceptive Survey. Reported reproductive intentions on desire for additional children were not always reflected in overall contraceptive use. Complicating factors were the use of modern and traditional methods and the role of induced abortion. Longitudinal observations of the 1982-85 period relating women's individual reproductive behaviour to their intentions show no consistent behavioural difference between those with and without sons. However, at any given parity, the proportion reporting at least one additional child born during the intersurvey period was higher among those women who intended to have at least one additional child than among those who wanted to stop childbearing. This analysis suggests that son preference finds expression more through reproductive intentions than through actual fertility behaviour in the follow-up period.
