[Stomatologic preparation of patients with malignancies of the maxillofacial region for radiation therapy].

A series of 3456 patients with malignant tumours of the maxillofacial region have been treated at the Clinic for Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery of the Military Medical Academy, Stomatological Clinic of the M.M.A. and Radiological Institute of Medical Faculty in Belgrade. The most frequent localization was lips and mucosa of the oral cavity, 77,9%. The irradiation therapy was applied in 42,3% of the patients and combined surgery and irradiation therapy in 28,6% Postirradiation changes of the oral cavity mucosa were found in 25% of the patients, teeth changes in 50% and Candida albicans was found in 56% of the patients. In order to prevent irradiation and postirradiation complications, all the patients with malignant tumours foressen for irradiation therapy should undergo a detailed stomatological examination and sanation of the oral cavity and teeth. The authors advocate team work in establishing the diagnosis and treating in which an important place should have stomatologist.

The historical materials of stomatological diseases in Zhu Su's Pu Ji Fang.

Pu Ji Fang, compiled by Zhu Su (Ming Dynasty), was the largest and most voluminous medical prescription book in ancient China. In the book, the author collected nearly all the achievements in the ancient times on stomatological medicine comprehensively and systematically. From it, we can see that doctors of traditional Chinese medicine at that time had very rich experiences on the knowledge of treatment and prevention of diseases of the oral cavity. It also reflects that the TCM stomatological medicine had reached a rather high standard.

[The assessment of dental caries activity in students of stomatology using Dentobuff tests].

The aim of the paper was to assess the risk of dental caries in students of the Faculty of Stomatology using standard biochemical tests and to answer the question whether Dentobuff tests could be used to study dental caries activity in the 20-25 age group. Sixty-six randomly chosen students of the Faculty of Stomatology, Medical Academy in Lublin have been included in to the study. Clinical examinations of dental state have been performed in all of them and they have been expressed by means of the average number of DMF, DMFs and component Ds. In biochemical examinations a ready-made test from Dentobuff set has been used. Statistically significant dependence between salivary pH and numbers DMF, DMFs and Ds has been found. In assessing the risk of dental caries, the results of Dentobuff should be considered together with other examinations and history data.

[The CO2 laser in stomatology. Part 1].

Since its development in the early 60s of the last century, the CO2 laser has been rapidly introduced into medical research and almost every surgical specialty in medicine and dentistry. In dental surgery it is mainly used for oral soft tissue applications. For the treatment of some stomatologic lesions the CO2 laser is looked upon as the treatment method of choice, while for other lesions the evidence for its use is still not sufficient. The first part of this review discusses the typical aspects of wound healing in oral soft tissues following the application of a CO2 laser and will focus on histopathological issues of biopsies taken with a CO2 laser as compared to conventionally performed biopsies. The second part will review indications for the use of the CO2 laser for the therapy of stomatologic lesions.

[The CO2 laser in stomatology. Part 2].

The second part of this review presents and discusses evidence in the recent literature for the application of the CO2 laser for the therapy of stomatologic lesions. Clinical outcomes and complications for the use of the CO2 laser are presented for the following stomatological conditions: leukoplakia, lichen planus, benign soft-tissue and salivary gland tumors, reactive soft tissue changes (i.e., fibroepithelial polyps), recurrent aphthous stomatitis, drug-induced gingival hyperplasia, mucous extravasation and mucous retention cysts, herpes simplex virus-induced lesions, maxillary midline frenum, and ankyloglossia (tongue-tie). This review outlines indications in which the CO2 laser is the treatment method of choice and in which situations the laser has still to be applied with caution.

[Stomatologic diseases in young men with constitutionally related malnutrition].

The stomatologic investigation has revealed multiple caries in the youths of pre-conscription age with constitutionally conditioned malnutrition (CCM). Its specific features are the following: the high affection of incisor and molar teeth, the involvement as a rule of 3 dental surfaces, the high incidence of complicated caries (especially when the bode mass index is 16.69 + /- 0.25 kg/ m2), with the prevalence of acute apical periodontitis of pulpar origin and chronic periodontitis. The "bad" mark of oral cavity hygiene was more often noted in CCM youths, that causes the high incidence of gingivitis severe forms among them. The wide spread and high intensity of dental-and-maxillary anomaly and deformity connected with permanent lower molar early removal as well as the high incidence of desquamative glossitis are registered in the given patient group. The revealed patterns of incidence and intensity of oral and dental diseases in CCM youths show the necessity of more detailed study of their stomatologic status with the use of special clinical-and-laboratory methods in order to develop the optimal rehabilitation programs.

[Ergonomic situation in stomatologic institutions of Tbilisi].

Special working features of stomatology distinguishes it from other medical disciplines. This makes necessary to establish ergonomic environment of work for dentists and follow all necessary principles. The paper presents the major indices or ergonomic expertise in stomatologic institutions of Tbilisi, Georgia. It was shown that 43% of doctors-stomatologists express their displeasure by the working conditions. Almost half of the doctors suffer form various diseases which are caused specifically by labor of stomatologists and by unsatisfactory labor conditions. In these organizations the major principles of the President (No 564 of 01.10.1999) and the Minister of Health of Georgia (No309\N of 05.11.2002) are violated, which affects the quality of the jobs performed by the doctors and thus infringes the rights of patients.

[Level of knowledge of the family physician about preventive stomatology].

OBJECTIVE: To determine the level of knowledge of the family physician on preventive stomatology. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Cross-sectional comparative, from 1999 to 2000 with convenience sample (70 family physicians) that fulfilled the criteria of selection. With a previous informed consent, a questionnaire with two sections was applied: one of them measures sociodemographic variables; and the second one, which explores the level of knowledge on the program of preventive odontology (POP), consists of 20 questions with three options of answer. This questionnaire was validated by means of judgment of experts, and it was made to analyze the extension and the level of understanding of the questions. The statistical analysis was made with measures of central tendency and deviation for quantitative variables, percentages and proportions for qualitative variables, chi2 for differences, as well as p value and intervals of confidence to 95% for statistical significance. RESULTS: Sample with an average age of 44 years old +/- 6.8; 44 of them (63%) were men, proportion of 2:1 men/1 woman; 42 of them (60%) had a good level of knowledge. 70% of the interviewed people had a specialty on Family Medicine; 19 of them (27%) practice privately; the average of labor antiquity was of 14 years +/- 5.89. There were no differences found in the level of knowledge and the fact of having a specialty on Family Medicine versus only having the Medicine degree (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Even though the level of knowledge on the Preventive Stomatology Program was average and good in a great percentage, it is necessary to make more studies on the subject, in order to establish improvement strategies.

[Comparison of stomatological findings in geriatric population of both the homes for the aged and one-man households].

In 187 residents of houses for the aged and 80 old persons living in one-man households in Hradec Králové, the authors proceeded by comparing the functional state of dentition, rate of pathological changes on the oral mucosa, level oral hygiene and regularity of stomatological care. Both groups showed no significant difference in numbers of male or female subjects, in age distribution nor in the educational level. Stomatological findings were more favorable in those living in their homes. This was probably caused by significantly higher numbers of self-sufficient persons than in the group of population living in the homes for aged.

[The value of current imagery techniques in dentistry and stomatology].

Computed tomography, ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging are currently used in stomatology and dentistry. These recent imaging modalities have suppressed or reduced classic examinations (by example: conventional tomography and sialography). Efficient, exact and fast, they improve the diagnostic capacities and optimize the choice of the treatments. After some technical considerations, their applications in various stomatology and dentistry problems are evoked.

[Acupuncture in stomatology].

The authors draws attention to the possible use of acupuncture in stomatology used in the course of 13 years in diseases of polyaetiological nature or where the aetiology is not well known. They demonstrate the success of this therapeutic method in diseases such as glossodynia, stomatodynia, primary neuralgia of the trigreminal nerve, contractures of the jaws, myofacial dysfunctional syndrome and disorders of salivary secretion in 178 patients treated at the out-patient department of the Second Stomatological Clinic in Bratislava.

[Effectiveness of the pediatric psychiatry consultation in stomatologic patients who are difficult to treat].

The obtained results suggest that the pedopsychiatric consultation is advantageous with regard to its psychotherapeutical effect on problem patients with normal intellectual capacity and with mental deficiency at debility level, i.e. individuals attending primary and special school. When some highly debile, or imbecile and idiotic children and adolescents refuse to cooperate during the stomatological attendance, the pedopsychiatric consultation fails. In these cases, stomatological attendance has to be performed under general anesthesia.
