The power of a cylinder in an oblique meridian: revisiting an old controversy.

The sine-squared correlation states that the cylinder power in an oblique meridian forming an angle beta with the axis of the cylinder is reduced to sin(2)beta of the maximal power. The sine-squared relationship is fundamental in paraxial optics, but its validity has repeatedly been questioned during the last century. It appears that two powers are operative in an oblique meridian, curvital and torsional. Curvital power is responsible for refraction in the plane of the meridian, while the torsional component twists the light out of that plane. Curvital power is the traditional power concept, while torsional power has only recently been described. The long-standing criticism of the sine-squared correlation is based on the erroneous assumption that only curvital power is operational in paraxial imagery. Curvital and torsional power are both derived from the sine-squared correlation. The concept of these dual powers repudiates the criticism and is in complete accordance with paraxial optics.

Laplace plane analysis of impedance on the H meridian.

The AC impedance of a length of the H meridian not containing any acupuncture points was studied by means of Laplace plane analysis of the time domain response to an input voltage pulse. The ensuing frequency domain data were compared to the results of an identical analysis for two anatomically similar controls on either side of the meridian. The resistance of the meridian was significantly lower than either control.

Neural correlates of the visual vertical meridian asymmetry.

Human visual performance is better below than above fixation along the vertical meridian-a phenomenon we refer to as vertical meridian asymmetry (VMA). Here, we used fMRI to investigate the neural correlates of the VMA. We presented stimuli of two possible sizes and spatial frequencies on the horizontal and vertical meridians and analyzed the fMRI data in subregions of early visual cortex (V1/V2) that corresponded retinotopically to the stimulus locations. Asymmetries in both the spatial extent and amplitude of the fMRI measurements correlated with the behavioral VMA. These results demonstrate that the VMA has a neural basis at the earliest stages of cortical visual processing and imply that visual performance is limited by the pooled sensory responses of large populations of neurons in the visual cortex.

Filling-in along horizontal and vertical meridians.

PURPOSE: Filling-in is not homogeneous across the visual field; rather, fading time (FT) varies with eccentricity and polar angle. The reasons for this are unclear. The authors investigated FT along horizontal and vertical meridians in central and peripheral visual fields for luminance-defined targets, comparing Weber contrast sensitivity (CSw). They also compared cone-mediated and rod-mediated filling-in with previously described photoreceptor densities. This represents the first investigation into rod-mediated filling-in. METHODS: Fading times were recorded in nine volunteers using luminance-defined stimuli at eccentricities of 0 degrees , 2.5 degrees , 5 degrees , 10 degrees , and 20 degrees for high-contrast stimuli and 0 degrees , 1.25 degrees , 2.5 degrees , 3.75 degrees , and 5 degrees for low-contrast stimuli and were compared with CSw at each location. Fading times were also recorded at 0 degrees , 2.5 degrees , 5 degrees , 10 degrees , and 20 degrees using red-green stimuli and at 5 degrees , 10 degrees , and 20 degrees under dark-adapted conditions and compared with cone and rod densities in the nasal, temporal, superior, and inferior hemimeridians. RESULTS: Consistent anisotropy was evident in central and peripheral fields for luminance-defined targets and for chromatic targets, with horizontal meridians taking longer to fill in. The same pattern was observed in CSw and the previously described cone density. Log FT and CSw were correlated irrespective of visual field location. The ratio of rod-mediated FT to rod density decreased with eccentricity. CONCLUSIONS: Anisotropy between horizontal and vertical meridians for FT is consistent in central and peripheral fields, reflecting patterns in CSw and cone density. This is discussed in the context of cortical processes underlying filling-in. For rod-mediated filling-in, more peripheral eccentricities are characterized by reduced FTs in relation to rod density.

[The effects of abdominal meridian massage on constipation among CVA patients].

PURPOSE: This study was aimed at developing an efficient nursing method for the management of constipation by comparing the effects of abdominal meridian massage on the symptoms of constipation. METHOD: The subjects were determined by the Rome II criteria and the Constipation Assessment Scale from Aug 30 through Sep 26, 2002. They were randomly divided into two groups: one experimental group of 16, another control group of 15. Abdominal meridian massage was given to the experimental group and no massage was given to the control group. The frequency of defecation and severity of constipation by CAS were measured. The data was analyzed with the t-test, chi(2)-test, and repeated measures ANOVA. RESULTS: There was a significant improvement in frequency of defecation, and severity of constipation in the experimental group compared to the control group. CONCLUSION: Abdominal meridian massage can be considered an effective nursing method for the management of constipation among CVA patients.

[The study on calcium ion concentration specificity in meridian and acupoint in rabbit].

Ion selected "Acupuncture electrode" was introduced for detection of calcium ion concentration in meridians and acupoints in rabbit. It was demonstrated that the calcium ion concentration was significant higher than that in the location of non-meridian and non-acupoint. This is the first and important finding of physicochemical characteristics of meridians.

Thalamic neuron theory: meridians=DNA. The genetic and embryological basis of traditional Chinese medicine including acupuncture.

This hypothesis proposes a mechanism by which the genetic information contained in the one-dimensional genome may be converted into a three-dimensional body plan for development. Prior to mitosis of the fertilized egg, the chromatids, after being unpackaged from the chromosomes, link up to form a giant circular loop which is then folded upon itself into a wired-frame structure that embodies the architectural embryological developmental scheme. This intranuclear spatial body design is then translated into a three-dimensional cellar plan surrounding the fertilized egg with the positional value of each surrounding daughter cell preferentially activated by specific spatially oriented gene products diffused through the neatly arranged nuclear pores of the cell nucleus of the fertilized egg. This group of cells of the primitive embryo then leads to the formation of the Spemann Organizer, which directs embryological development of the brain as well as the rest of the body. The Spemann Organizer thus retains control over the CNS which in turn controls the development and functions of the peripheral tissues. The chains of cells that compose the Spemann Organizer, forming a homunculus in the image of the wired frame formed by the chromatids are believed to be the equivalents of acupuncture meridians. To support the hypothesis, evidence is also presented to substantiate the intimate relationships between the acupuncture meridians and embryological development, evolution, the central nervous system as well as the genome. This theoretical model is capable of dispelling the mystery of acupuncture, traditional Chinese medicine and myriads of modern clinical observations, and may have the potential to usher in a multitude of innovative therapeutic methods for many difficult to treat medical conditions.

Distribution of interstitial fluid pressure and fluid volumes in hind-limb skin of rats: relation to meridians?

To determine the distribution of interstitial fluid pressure (Pi) and volume (Vi), and to relate the distribution of these parameters to the distribution of potential meridians located by measurement of electrical impedance, we measured Pi, extracellular fluid (Ve) and plasma volumes (Vp) in 14 pre-defined skin areas, 2 x 2 mm, and in concave and convex regions on the hind-limb and groin of rats in control conditions. Pi was measured with sharpened glass capillaries connected to a servo-controlled counter-pressure system, while Ve and Vp were determined as the extravascular distribution spaces of 51Cr-EDTA and 125I-human serum albumin, respectively. Vi was calculated as Ve - Vp, and Vw as the difference between skin wet and dry weight. Grand mean Pi averaged -0.81 mmHg (SD 0.83, n=95). Pi in skin was significantly higher in lateral and medial parts of the medial aspect of hind-limb compared to pressures in the intermediate area (P<0.05). Pressures in the concave groin and the convex knee area were more negative and positive, respectively, than in the flat intermediate central hind-limb area. There was a significantly higher Vi (P<0.05) and Vw (P<0.05) in the lateral side than that in the medial side. Vp was higher medially and laterally than in the intermediate area (P<0.05 for both comparisons), and correlated positively and significantly with Pi (r=0.66, P<0.05). No correlation was found between Pi and electrical impedance. The study suggests that the distribution of Pi, Vi, Vp and Vw is heterogeneous in hind-limb skin at a macroscopic level without obvious relations to potential meridians.

Effects of myofascial-meridian stimulation therapy (mmst) on shoulder pain.

Fifty patients with shoulder pain were classified into two groups according to the type of pain: a capsular-pattern group (N = 22) and a non-capsular-pattern group (N = 28). Both groups received myofascial-meridian stimulation therapy four times in two weeks. After therapy, the pain level was significantly lower in the capsular-pattern than in the non-capsular-pattern group. The capsular-pattern group showed a nonsignificant trend toward greater range of motion than the non-capsular-pattern group. These data suggest that myofascial-meridian stimulation therapy might be useful as a new treatment to reduce pain and increase range of motion in patients with shoulder pain.

Safety and efficacy of Meridian sinew tuina (MST) for post-surgical upper limb lymphedema: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Complex Decongestive Therapy (CDT) is the non-operative standard for breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL), but many patients experience persistent subcutaneous stiffness, pain, and restricted mobility. This study systematically reviews the safety and clinical efficacy of Meridian Sinew Tuina (MST) protocols for BCRL. METHODS: Global and regional databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science, CNKI, Wanfang, VIP) were searched from inception to January 15, 2026, with alerts monitored through April 30, 2026. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating MST (deep tissue mobilisation along the six-hand meridian sinew [Jingjin] lines via plucking, kneading, and pressing) were included. Two reviewers independently extracted data, evaluated risk of bias using Cochrane RoB 2, and assessed evidence certainty via GRADE using a random-effects model. RESULTS: Fifteen RCTs were included. For the primary anthropometric outcome, MST significantly reduced upper limb circumference compared to controls (SMD = 1.59; 95% CI: 1.44 to 1.74; Z = 20.81; p < 0.0001; I2=0.0%; N = 924; GRADE: Moderate certainty). The Clinical Response Efficacy Rate (≥ 30% swelling reduction and symptom relief) favoured MST (RR = 1.69; 95% CI: 1.54 to 1.87; Z = 10.62; p < 0.0001; I2=0.0%; N = 1,114; GRADE: Moderate certainty). Trial Sequential Analysis confirmed sample size sufficiency. For secondary outcomes (N = 924; GRADE: Low to Very Low certainty due to performance bias and clinical heterogeneity), MST showed favourable 3-month improvements in DASH functional scores (SMD = -1.81; 95% CI: -2.11 to -1.51; I2=45.1%), pain intensity (SMD = -2.44; 95% CI: -2.93 to -1.95; I2=50.4%), and quality of life (SMD = 1.04; 95% CI: 0.79 to 1.29; I2=0.0%). No serious adverse events occurred. CONCLUSIONS: MST protocols are associated with favourable short- and mid-term reductions in upper limb swelling. However, confidence is tempered by unblinded performance bias and control group variations. MST cannot be unconditionally recommended for standalone implementation but represents a promising, optional supportive adjunctive intervention within oncological rehabilitation.

Experimental evidence of a plant meridian system: I. Bioelectricity and acupuncture effects on electrical resistance of the soybean (Glycine max).

Experiments were conducted on the bioelectrical potential and resistance of soybean (Glycine max) roots, stems, leaves and pods. Results showed a higher potential and lower electrical resistance associated with the leaf cushion, main vein and small vein areas in comparison with other parts of the plant. When two needles were inserted into one of the low resistance points, i.e., the leaf cushion area, the electrical resistance decreased 26.0% on the main vein and 4.5% on the mesophyll of the soybean leaf for at least 5 hours after acupuncture. These characteristics, similar to those of meridian transmission lines in humans and other animals, suggest that a meridian system might also exist in plants.

Experimental evidence of a plant meridian system: II. The effects of needle acupuncture on the temperature changes of soybean (Glycine max).

When stainless steel needles were inserted opposite each other in the stem near the unifoliolate buds of soybean plants and retained there for the whole experiment, leaf temperatures increased for two consecutive days. Following acupuncture, the mean temperature of the main vein in the first and second days increased 0.59 degree C and 0.48 degree C, respectively, while the temperature of mesophyll increased only 0.50 degree C and 0.47 degree C in the first and second days. These results are very consistent with studies on the human meridian system. This is our second report on experimental evidence that plants may have a meridian system as is known to exist in mammals.

Characteristics of acupuncture meridians and acupoints in animals.

In recent years, an increasing number of studies has been conducted on the biophysical characteristics of the meridians and acupoints in humans and animals. The authors aim to further illustrate the objective existence and superficial locations of the meridians in various species of animals. Twelve sheep, ten goats, thirteen pigs, eleven cats, eight rabbits and seven donkeys were used to measure low impedance lines (LILs) and high percussion sound lines (HPSLs) on the skin surface of the animals, along the vertical planes of the dorsal line, using electrical impulses and high percussion sound. The results of these studies are given.

Characterization of DNA-containing granules flowing through the meridian-like system on the internal organs of rabbits.

It is an essential question for acupuncture whether the acupuncture meridians form an anatomically distinctive system of threadlike ducts that spread throughout an animal body. We observed the threadlike structures on the surface of internal organs of animals. This threadlike structure may be the physical basis of the meridian-like network of internal organs as detected by the Bi-Digital O-Ring test imaging method. One of the characteristics of the threadlike structures is the presence of DNA containing granules or Bonghan granules that flow through the ducts. The aim of this study was to separate and characterize their morphology and ultrastructural features. Using confocal laser-scanning microscopy (CLSM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we found that Bonghan granules were round and measure 1.7-2.5 microm in diameter. They had a small nucleus surrounded by a layer of cytoplasm and a trilaminar plasma membrane. TEM also showed that they had cytoplasmic protrusions like pseudopodia. They contained fragmented DNA with a significant amount of 3'-OH ends. We compared their properties with the cell structure and general morphology of apoptotic bodies, bacteria, and the microcells. The motion of these granules was influenced by light, which may be related to the photo-therapy on the acupuncture points.

[A simulating study of biophysical features along meridians on a gel model].

A physical model was used to study the mechanism of specific biophysical features along the classic acupuncture meridian lines. A sol channel within a gel bed was made by a resistance string heating during electrification. A saline channel was produced by withdrawing some fibers in the gel bed and injecting saline into the gaps. A hydraulic resistance instrument composed by two pressure transducers was used to measure the hydraulic resistance across the two kinds of channels. The impedance on both channels was measured by a four-electrode impedance instrument with 5 KHz constant current. A vibration generator was put on one set of the channel to produce about 50 Hz sound waves. The signal was detected by a crystal pickup on the other set of the channel to examine the transmission of the wave along the two kinds of channels. The results showed that the low hydraulic resistance appeared on saline channel while no such feature on sol channel. Both channels showed low impedance while saline channel had more marked low impedance than control area. There was a better transmission of sound wave along saline channel while a bad transmission along the sol channel. The results suggest that the specific biophysical feature along meridians may be caused by a continuous rich distribution of interstitial fluid which mainly contains salt, water and protein.
