Two patients with complications of conservative omphalocele-treatment are described. A mercury-intoxication and an alcohol-intoxication were seen, respectively. It is concluded that generally a surgical treatment regimen is preferable, if the cele is not too large. When it is not possible to perform surgical treatment, alcohol application probably is the safest method. Dosage and frequency of application should be as limited as possible.

The effects of the topical antiseptic agents mercurochrome and silver nitrate and of sodium hyaluronate on the process of wound healing were assessed by macroscopic examination, light microscopy histology, electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy of wounds made by cutting or by abrasion of the skin of rats. It was found that wounds treated with hyaluronic acid underwent longer periods of inflammation (proportional to the presence of mastocytes) and greater amounts of collagen deposition than wounds that were either untreated controls or treated with silver nitrate or mercurochrome, but this did not impede the formation in the early stages of healing of bridges of fibrin between the edges of the wounds.

By the use of intradermal tests, passive transfer (P.K.), and an in vitro histamine release test, we were able to demonstrate immediate hypersensitivity to Mercurochrome in a young man who had suffered anaphylactic shock after having contact with this antiseptic. Cross-reactions among different organic mercurial compounds were observed.

Many well known histochemical techniques have been employed to study the neurosecretory products in invertebrates and vertebrates. Among these aldehyde-fuchsin (AF) has been one of the two specific stains to demonstrate the presence of neurosecretory cells. Various counterstains have been employed with AF. However, AF is also useful in demonstrating the presence of mucosubstances or elastin. A method is described here for a simultaneous demonstration of neurosecretory substances (NSS) and mucosubstances (MS) by mercurochrome counterstaining. For this method sections of material fixed in methanol-formaldehyde-acetic acid (MFA) or alcoholic Bouin's or Susa were oxidized in 0.3% permanganate with 0.3 ml concentrated H2SO4 for 1 to 2 minutes, decolorized in 1% oxalic acid, stained in 0.5% aqueous basic fuchsin containing 1 ml concentrated HCl and 1 ml paraldehyde for 10 min and counterstained with 0.5% aqueous mercurochrome. After mercurochrome counterstaining the characteristic AF staining (purple colour) of NSS is dramatically swamped (becoming brick red) but the purple developed by MS remains unaltered in vertebrate and invertebrate material. Eosin or other counterstains do not behave in this way.
Premature ventricular contractions are relatively often encountered in patients after surgical treatment of ischaemic heart disease. Mercurascan (MSC), given at 0.05 mg/kg of body weight, favourably affected both the incidence and duration of arrhythmia. Unlike other antiarrhythmics, MSC did not affect the heart rate nor blood pressure. Postoperative treatment of ventricular arrhythmia with MSC is a promising procedure and merits further clinical and experimental investigation.

We review our experience of 32 cases of omphalocele treated in the last ten years. Improved neonatal intensive care unit, as well as other support care measures, allowed to extend even to the large defects the indication to radical primary repair. Our experience has supported that this is the method of choice in almost all cases. At present the surgical success depend on associated anomalies, cardiac especially (25% in our series), and on development of sepsis. Analysis of the results shows an overall mortality rate of 41% in the period 1973/1982, significantly decreased to 33% in the last five years.

The tanning method using 7% silvernitrate and 2% mebromide solution for second degree burns in childhood is demonstrated. The advantages of this method are described as singular and painless application of the agent, little annoyance of the patient, bactericidal effect in second degree burns, low expenses and easy medical care. The procedure of tanning is preferred in treating burn injuries of the trunk and non mobile areas of the extremities. We report on indication, procedure of tanning and results in the treatment of 129 burned children.
Mercurochrome was applied to tissues and tissue sections in an attempt to examine structural components either in visible light, fluorescence or electron microscopy. Samples of bone marrow from rats were fixed in glutaraldehyde alone, embedded in Durcupan, and studied by using semi-thin and thin sections. After treatment with mercurochrome in acetone before embedding, the eosinophilic granules from leucocytes and chromatin masses showed electron opacity as well as a yellowish green fluorescence under excitation with violet-blue or blue light. An additional treatment of sections with an alkaline hydroalcoholic solution of the dye allowed to visualize these structures under bright-field illumination and to improve the contrast in the electron microscope. This method offers the possibility to examine specific cell components by using a compound which simultaneously possesses staining, fluorescence, and electron microscopic contrasting properties.
