Patent ductus arteriosus. Its occurrence with unequal pulmonary vascularity and hyperlucent left lung.
Twenty-four of 230 patients with patent ductus arteriosus had hypovascularity and hyperlucency in the left lung on preoperative chest roentgenograms. Two of the 24 patients died shortly after operation, and one was unavailable for follow-up. During the postoperative course (mean, three years), roentgenograms of eight of the remaining 21 patients showed persistent, unequal pulmonary vascularity and hyperlucent left lung, with no evidence of air trapping, and two patients had diminished volume of the hyperlucent left lung compared with that of the right lung.
Swyer-James (MacLeod's) syndrome following pertussis infection in an infant.
Pertussis is a potentially severe disease, especially in infancy. The case of an 8-month-old infant is described who presented the typical radiographic image of unilateral hyperlucent lung or Swyer-James (MacLeod's) syndrome. The infant suffered from pertussis at 20 d of age. A rare postinfectious complication of pertussis is reported.
Swyer-James syndrome.
Swyer-James Syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by a unilateral hyperlucent lung. It is thought to be due to sequelae of childhood respiratory infections. It may present with recurrent pulmonary infections, chronic respiratory symptoms or be found incidentally on chest imaging. We report a case of Swyer-James syndrome presenting with recurrent pulmonary infections.
