Invisible inventors. A historical overview of creative midwives and nurses.

This historical overview documents women's inventions for providing nursing care dating from 1608 to 1928. The word invention is broadly defined and includes ideas that created therapeutic activities, caregiving environments, and specific devices for care. It focuses on the creative contributions of early outstanding midwives and other practicing nurses around the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Sources include illustrations of patented items, practical hints published in early issues of the American Journal of Nursing (AJN), published translations of original documents from Europe, original historical research on women in Europe and America, and records from the U.S. Government Patent Office. The role of nurses in creating and developing tools and methods for providing nursing care has gone unrecognized. It is important to clarify the record of women's and nurses' inventiveness.

[Deposition of microorganisms at patenting the invention and results for the inventor].

The standards of the patent legislation of Ukraine and other countries concerning the deposition of microorganisms at patenting of the invention and conditions for the availability of the deposited samples have been considered. The questions connected to practice of strains deposition in Ukraine which require the normative decision or specification in view of the tendency of development of patent legislation in the countries advanced in the sphere of the industrial property have been outlined.

[Eduard Boeckmann--scientist, inventor and benefactor].

Eduard Boeckmann (1849-1927) left a lasting legacy in Norway and in America. His scientific career started when as a medical student he won the Skjelderup gold medal for a study of the tonsils. In Bergen he presented his thesis, an experimental study dealing with the cause of keratitis, which affected many patients with leprosy. Later he published vigorously from his medical practice. In St. Paul, Minnesota, he constructed a steam autoclave based on principles that became fundamental in later autoclave technique. His autoclave was put into industrial production. In his own laboratory he worked with improvement and safe sterilization of catgut, and catgut was produced in St. Paul for 59 years, till 1960. He donated income from the catgut production to a fund for a medical library, today the Boeckmann Library of the United Hospital in St. Paul. Boeckmann had a high reputation as a doctor. His American patients were first of all Norwegian settlers in the north-western states. Both in Bergen and in St. Paul he was highly active in the professional associations.

[Dr. John Arbuthnot, inventor of statistical testing].

John Arbuthnot, Queen Anne's medic was very fond of probabilities and statistics expectations. Showing a great interest to new born's sex forecast, he devised a new way: the statistics. Then, he ruled out the case according to uncertain fluctuations connected with an average of 50% male births the excess of male births during 82 years in London. In that mind, he forged ahead to demonstrate Providence deed.

[Eugene de Séré (1828-1870), inventor of the electric lancet].

The authors relate chiefly medical-officer Eugene de Sere's military career, particuliarly some parts of his work: the invention of a galvano-cautery, an electric cutter including a scale which allows to change current strength whether it is needing to cut flesh or to coagulate blood. That instrument is the forerunner of every modern one.
