Ankle muscle stiffness in the control of balance during quiet standing.

This research presents new data and reanalyzed information to refute the criticisms of our model of stiffness control during quiet standing. A re-review of their references to biomechanical research on muscle ankle stiffness confirmed muscle stiffness estimates of the ankle series elastic elements that agreed closely with our estimates. A new technique is presented that directly estimates the muscle stiffness from the ankle moment (N. m) and sway angle (deg). The linear regression of 10 subjects standing quietly for 10 s estimated the stiffness (N x m/deg) to be safely above the gravitational spring. The R(2) scores for this linear regression averaged 0.92, confirming how closely the model approached a perfect spring that would have an R(2) = 1. These results confirm our model of a simple muscle stiffness control and refutes the criticisms.

Studies on nematode infections of beef cattle in New South Wales.

The occurrence and seasonal trends of nematode parasite infections in beef cattle on the Tablelands and North Coast regions of New South Wales are described, based on worm counts from 627 spring-born steers slaughtered at 2-monthly intervals from 6 to 24 months of age. The predominant parasites were Ostertagia ostertagi, Trichostrongylus axei and Cooperia spp. Large burdens of adult Ostertagia were seen in 12-month-old animals in late winter and early spring, and later in 18- to 20-month-old cattle in the following late summer and autumn. These infections often resulted in outbreaks of clinical parasitism. Massive numbers of inhibited early fourth stage larvae (EL4) also accumulated in the yearlings during their first spring, reached peaks in mid-summer and then declined. The possibility of their resumption of development to mature worms in the late summer and autumn period is discussed. Adult T. axei showed a similar seasonal trend to Ostertagia and may have increased the severity of outbreaks of clinical disease. Cooperia populations of EL4 and adult worms were highest in weaners during winter, but lower numbers thereafter indicated a strong resistance to re-infection. In addition, Haemonchus placei occurred frequently on the North Coast both as EL4 and adults in cattle of all ages up to 20 months. Of the other cattle nematodes, Oesophagostomum radiatum and Trichuris spp occurred in low numbers, mainly in weaners. Bunstomum phlebotomum and H. contortus occurred sporadically on the North Coast and Tablelands respectively. Intestinal Trichostronglyus spp, Oesophagostomum venulosum and Dictyocaulus viviparus were seen occasionally and Nematodirus spp were not seen. There was a poor relationship between worm counts and faecal egg counts. Cooperia spp dominated the egg counts, while those for other genera were generally low and did not reflect the relative abundance or seasonal changes in worm numbers.

Population dynamics of some Pakistan mosquitoes: changes in adult relative abundance over time and space.

Time series and spatial changes in the relative abundance of 14 mosquito species were described from weekly or biweekly collections at nine localities in Punjab province, Pakistan, from January 1976 to June 1980. Comparisons between indoor aspirator catches and outdoor mechanical sweeper collections enabled mosquito resting habits to be classified as: (1) endophilic (Anopheles culicifacies, An. fluviatilis, An. stephensi, An. subpictus); (2) partially exophilic (An. annularis, An. pulcherrimus, An. nigerrimus, Culex bitaeniorhynchus, Cx, pseudovishnui, Cx, quinquefasciatus, Cx. tritaeniorhynchus), or exophilic (Cx. fuscocephala, Aedes caspius, Mansonia uniformis). Temporal abundance patterns were grouped by seasonality, overwintering strategies and the magnitude of fluctuation. Seasonal patterns were: (1) unimodal-spring (Cx. quinquefasciatus, Ae. capius); (2) unimodal-monsoon (An. nigerrimus, An. subpictus, Cx. bitaeniorhynchus, Cx. fuscocephala); (3) bimodal-spring dominant (An. annularis, An. culcifacies, An. stephensi), and (4) bimodal-monsoon/post-monsoon dominant (An. fluviatilis, An. pulcherrimus, Cx. pseudovishnui, Cx. tritaeniorhynchus, Ma. uniformis). Mosquito overwintering strategies included: (1) adults with slowed reproductive activity (An. annularis, An. culicifacies, An. fluviatilis, An. pulcherrimus, An. stephensi, Cx. quinquefasciatus); (2) females with interrupted reproductive activity (An. nigerrimus, Cx. fuscocephala, Cx. pseudovishnui, Cx. tritaeniorhynchus); (3) immature stages (Ae. caspius, Ma. uniformis) and (4) annual extinction and re-introduction (An. subpictus). The magnitude of seasonal change was classified by the number of standard deviations from the overall mean exhibited by the annual maxima or minima: (1) stationary, less than 1 standard deviation (An. culicifacies, An. fluviatilis, Cx. bitaeniorhynchus, Ae. caspius), (2) fluctuating moderately, one to two standard deviations (An. annularis, An. nigerrimus, An. pulcherrimus, An. stephensi, Cx. fuscocephala, Cx. quinquefasciatus, Ma. uniformis) and (3) markedly fluctuating greater than two standard deviations (An. subpictus, Cx. pseudovishnui, Cx. tritaeniorhynchus). The seasonal increases of An. culicifacies and An. stephensi abundance did not closely parallel the periods of maximal malaria transmission. Temporal patterns exhibited by several culicine species indicated that the period of greatest West Nile virus activity would probably occur during the post-monsoon season.

Repeated oestrus synchrony and fixed-time artificial insemination in beef cows.

The feasibility of breeding spring-calving, single-suckled beef cows without the use of natural service was investigated over two breeding seasons by using repeated oestrus synchrony and fixed-time artificial insemination (AI). Initially, cows were oestrus-synchronised with subcutaneous norgestomet implants inserted for 10 days, with an injection of prostaglandin before the implants were removed. The cows were inseminated once 56 hours after the implants were removed, and 12 days later they were re-treated with norgestomet implants to allow a second synchronised service. Twenty-one days after the first synchronised AI, milk samples were taken for progesterone assay and the norgestomet implants were removed. The cows received a second service 56 hours later if the 21-day milk progesterone assay suggested that they were not pregnant. All the cows receiving a second service were retreated with norgestomet implants to allow a third synchronised service as necessary. Pregnancy was later confirmed by rectal palpation. In the first year, 48 cows entered the programme and the pregnancy rates to the first, second and third synchronised services were 56, 69 and 40 per cent, respectively, with 17 per cent of cows barren at the end of the breeding period. In the second year, 69 cows entered the programme and the pregnancy rates were 58, 48 and 33 per cent to the successive services with 20 per cent of cows barren at the end of the breeding period. The accuracy of milk progesterone assay for pregnancy diagnosis was 84 per cent and 87 per cent in the first and second years, respectively.

Physico-chemical controls on phosphorus cycling in two lowland streams. Part 1 -- the water column.

This paper investigates phosphorus (P) transport and transformation dynamics in two contrasting sub-catchments of the River Kennet, England. Samples were collected daily under baseflow and hourly under stormflow conditions using autosamplers for 2 years and analysed for a range of determinands (full P fractionation, suspended sediment (SS), cations, pH, alkalinity, temperature and oxygen). Concentrations of SRP, SUP, PP and SS were higher in the flashy River Enborne (means of 0.186, 0.071, 0.101 and 34 mg l(-1), respectively) than the groundwater-fed River Lambourn (0.079, 0.057, 0.028 and 9 mg l(-1), respectively). A seasonal trend in the daily P dataset was evident, with lower concentrations during intermediate flows and the spring (caused by a dilution effect and macrophyte uptake) than during baseflow conditions. However, in the hourly P dataset, highest concentrations were observed during storm events in the autumn and winter (reflecting higher scour with increased capacity to entrain particles). Storm events were more significant in contributing to the total P load in the River Enborne than the River Lambourn, especially during August to October, when dry antecedent conditions were observed in the catchment. Re-suspension of P-rich sediment that accumulated within the channel during summer low flows might account for these observations. It is suggested that a P-calcite co-precipitation mechanism was operating during summer in the River Lambourn, while adsorption by metal oxyhydroxide groups was an important mechanism controlling P fractionation in the River Enborne. The influence of flow conditions and channel storage/release mechanisms on P dynamics in these two lowland rivers is assessed.

[Human hemoglobin structure and respiratory transport].

Hemoglobin carries oxygen from the lungs to the tissues and helps to transport carbon dioxide back to the lungs. It fulfills this dual role by clicking back and forth between two alternative structures, designated T for tense and R for relaxed, which are defined by the theory of allostery. Like all proteins, it is made up of small molecules called amino acids. A hemoglobin molecule is made up of four polypeptide chains, two alpha chains of 141 amino acid residues each and two beta chains of 146 amino acid residues each. In the complete molecule, four subunits are closely joined, as in a three-dimensional jigsaw puzzle, to form a tetramer. In the T structure, the subunits of the molecule are clamped by salt bridges and hydrogen bonds against the pressure of springs and their narrow pockets impede the entry of oxygen. In the R structure, all the clamps have sprung open and the heme pockets are open wide enough to admit oxygen easily. Uptake of oxygen by the T structure would strain the clamps until they all burst open in concert and allow the molecule to relax to the R structure. Loss of oxygen will narrow the heme pockets and allow the T structure to re-form.

The effect of oxandrolone on low and high density lipoprotein profiles in retired breeder rats.

The retired breeder rat, an animal known to undergo premature aging and to develop hypercholesterolemia, was studied to determine the effect of oxandrolone, a synthetic hypolipidemic steroid, on serum lipoprotein subfractions. The methods utilized for this study included density ultracentrifugation, electron microscopic lipoprotein particle sizing, and disc gel electrophoresis. The data confirmed the cholesterol-lowering ability of oxandrolone and demonstrated that its effect on total serum cholesterol was limited to the low and high density lipoprotein subclasses. The drug-treated group had 50% less LDL cholesterol and 25% less HDL cholesterol. Though there was an absolute decrease in total serum cholesterol in both these fractions, there was a re-distribution of cholesterol, such that post-treatment LDL carried less cholesterol and HDL more cholesterol on a percentage basis than found in pre-treatment values. In the light of current concepts of atherogenicity these alterations are of interest and potentially of considerable value.

Autumn incidence of suicides re-examined: data from Finland by sex, age and occupation.

The seasonal variation in suicides in Finland during the period 1961-1976 was examined using individual records from 16,312 death certificates and time-series analysis. De-trended figures show that suicides are usually concentrated in early summer but a secondary rise in the late part of the year is noted, particularly in females, among those aged 15-24 years and in the highest and lowest (i.e. unknown) social classes. In modern occupations (technical, administrative, clerical, sales and service work) suicides usually occur in late autumn. It is suggested that the original seasonal peak in suicides lies in spring-summer, while the autumn peak is of later origin and typical of those living in a man-made environment.

Effect of exogenous melatonin and extending the dark period at dusk before the summer solstice on the onset of oestrus in Romney Marsh ewes.

Groups of Romney Marsh ewes (n = 24) were injected with exogenous melatonin or subjected to extended darkness or a combination of both at dusk from the winter to the summer solstice before being re-exposed to the natural photoperiod at 35 degrees S. The animals were at all times exposed to natural dawn. The onset of subsequent oestrus was delayed when compared with controls subjected to the natural photoperiod. Either melatonin or darkness or a combination were equally effective at delaying oestrus. The results are consistent with a hypothesis based on an external coincidence model of seasonal breeding involving the coincidence of a light-sensitive phase set close to dusk that, when exposed to light in spring and summer, prepares the reproductive axis to respond correctly to the direct effects of the inductive photoperoid in autumn. The offset of the time of oestrus was not affected by the experimental treatments nor was the timing of the subsequent reproductive season. Since melatonin was as effective as darkness at influencing the assumed photosensitive signal, even in the presence of natural light, melatonin may act through the light reception system.

Goal importance within planned behaviour theory as 'the' predictor of study behaviour in college.

BACKGROUND: The theory of planned behaviour has been rarely used for the explanation of student study behaviour and achievement. Although successful, the theory has been criticised for not including important cognitions, so goal importance was added in the present study. Goal importance refers to the weight-importance an individual assigns towards achieving a specific goal (Hollenbeck & Williams, 1987). AIMS: The purpose of Study 1 was to explain the study behaviour habits of first year college students, using a) Ajzen and Madden's (1986) theory of planned behaviour, and b) planned behaviour with the addition of goal importance. The purpose of Study 2 was to replicate the findings of Study 1. SAMPLES: The sample of Study 1 included 149 first year students of an American College located in northern Greece. Study 2 included 85 first year students of the same institution. METHODS: The students in Study 1 were given a questionnaire four weeks prior to the end of the spring 1998 semester, and those in Study 2 in the autumn of 1998, including all elements of the theory of planned behaviour and goal importance. The data were modelled using Covariance Structural Modelling (CSM) and EQS 5.7b (Bentler, 1998). RESULTS: The planned behaviour model was not well supported in Study 1 providing a Comparative Fit Index (CFI) of.83. However, when goal importance was included in the equation, the resulting structural model produced a CFI of.94. The final structural model of Study 1 was re-tested with the sample of Study 2 and produced a CFI =.95. CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggest that goal importance is the causal agent in directing all elements necessary to achieve high levels of study behaviour. Future studies should examine the role of goal importance with other behaviours as well.

Partial strategic tick control within a herd of European breed cattle in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil.

A trial is described, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, as one of a series suggested to investigate the effects of strategic but selective acaricide treatments of cattle within herds against Boophilus microplus. They are aimed at considering the repercussions of farmer attempts at immediate reductions in acaricide costs and the potential for creation of 'refugia' of untreated ticks. Half (Group 1) of a small experimental herd of European breed heifers were treated strategically against ticks, three times during the late spring-early summer and twice during autumn (southern hemisphere), with an injectable avermectin endectocide, designed to act directly against the first and third generations of parasitic B. microplus per 'cattle tick year' at this site, respectively. The consequent levels of infestations on all of the member cattle in their common pasture were monitored. Group 1 showed low to zero tick counts during the 28-day treatment interval periods and up to ca. 14 days after the last of such a series. Treated cattle, however, became re-infested outside of these periods and to levels that would be considered as unacceptable by farmers in the state. The untreated cattle (Group 2) showed infestations at generally higher levels, than their contemporaries, within and outside of the treatment periods. There were thus ample sources of larvae in the pasture, derived principally from falling, untreated engorged female ticks, re-infesting both the treated and untreated cattle. Advantages of maintaining chemically untreated cattle ticks within a herd, compared to their disadvantages as contaminants to classical strategic control procedures, merit re-evaluation, especially in relation to the recent, world-wide resurgence of acaricide resistance in B. microplus.

Clinical phenotypes and molecular characterization of Hb H-Paksé disease.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Hemoglobin Constant Spring (Hb CS), caused by a termination codon mutation (TAA-->CAA) in the a2 gene, is the most common non-deletional type of a thalassemia in Southeast Asia. This mutation can most easily be detected by loss of an MseI-restriction site (T/TAA) spanning the termination codon. Recently, we sequenced the a globin genes from patients with a thalassemia in whom this MseI site was absent. This revealed, a previously described termination codon mutation (TAA-->TAT) associated with Hb Paksé. This prompted us to re-evaluate the molecular basis of a thalassaemia in other Thai patients with non-deletional types of Hb H disease. DESIGN AND METHODS: DNA samples from 30 patients, previously diagnosed as having Hb H-CS disease, were characterized by direct genomic sequencing and by using a mismatched polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Clinical and hematologic data were assessed. RESULTS: Hemoglobin electrophoresis in almost all 30 unrelated patients with non-deletional a thalassemia revealed a slow migrating band resembling Hb CS. Five of these patients were found to have Hb H-Paksé disease and the remainder had Hb H-CS disease. Comparing the hematology in patients with these two genotypes, no significant differences were found except that the proportion of Hb H was higher in patients with Hb H-Paksé disease. INTERPRETATION AND CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that termination codon mutations may have been previously misidentified in many cases of non-deletional Hb H disease. Findings from six unrelated families described in this study suggest that the proportion of patients with the Hb Paksé mutation might be underestimated and that this mutation could be prevalent in Southeast Asia. Analysis of mismatched-PCR-RFLP, described here, was shown to provide an unequivocal diagnosis and will be applicable in population screening programs.

Using microsatellite and MHC variation to identify species, ESUs, and MUs in the endangered Sonoran topminnow.

Highly variable loci can provide insight into the recognition of species, evolutionarily significant units (ESUs) and management units (MUs). In general, the ESU and MU categories are thought to be reflective of adaptive differences between them. Here we examine this premise by presenting a comprehensive examination of genetic variation for both microsatellite loci and a major histocompatibility complex (MHC) locus, thought to be of adaptive significance, in the endangered Sonoran topminnow. The extent of variation for the microsatellite loci and the MHC gene within the 13 populations of the Gila topminnow is highly correlated, suggesting that nonselective factors have played an important role in influencing variation within and between populations for the MHC locus. Therefore, using all of these loci, we found that the eight natural populations of the Gila topminnow fell into two different ESUs, one of which had four different MUs. The source of the Boyce Thompson sample, a population that was used extensively for restocking, appeared to be Monkey Spring. The source of the Watson Wash population also appeared to be Monkey Spring (or Boyce Thompson). The newly colonized Santa Cruz River population, which had the most genetic variation of any Gila topminnow population, appeared to descend primarily from Sonoita Creek populations. The Yaqui topminnow, presently considered another subspecies of the Sonoran topminnow, was very distinct for both microsatellite (only two of 25 alleles found in the Yaqui were in any of the Gila topminnow samples) and MHC alleles (nonoverlapping sets of alleles for the two groups). As a result, it appeared that the taxonomic status of the two subspecies should be re-evaluated and that full species status for Gila and Yaqui topminnows was appropriate. There was evidence for the importance of long-term selection at the MHC locus in the higher rate of nonsynonymous than synonymous substitution. In addition, there appeared to have been a duplication of the MHC locus that was present in most of the fish in six of the natural populations of the Gila topminnow.

Candidate-gene cloning and targeted marker enrichment of wheat chromosomal regions using RNA fingerprinting-differential display.

The usefulness of the RNA fingerprinting-differential display technique in gene cloning and targeted marker enrichment in wheat is demonstrated. A small region of chromosome 5BL was targeted that contains Ph1, a chromosome-pairing regulator gene. The cultivar Chinese Spring (CS) and mutant ph1b are almost identical except for chromosome 5BL, which, in the mutant line, carries an interstitial deletion encompassing the Ph1 gene. Poly(A)+ RNA of the two lines from anthers at developmental stages ranging from pre-meiotic mitosis to anaphase II was PCR-amplified using 38 pairwise combinations of 19 primers. The 35S-labeled amplified products were size-separated on denaturing polyacrylamide-urea gels. A total of 3154 fragment bands were observed, of which 43 were present in CS but absent in the ph1b mutant. These 43 fragment bands were eluted, re-amplified, and used as probes in gel-blot DNA analyses of wheat group 5 nullisomic-tetrasomic lines and the ph1b mutant. Twenty-four of these 43 probes were single- or few-copy sequences. Eight of the 24 probes mapped to wheat group 5 and five mapped to the deletion of the ph1b mutant. Three of these five probes were further localized to the submicroscopic region containing the Ph1 gene, by using two deletion lines flanking the region. Northern-blot analysis revealed that the gene corresponding to one of these three probes expresses mainly during meiosis and is from the B genome.

[Rainer Werner Fassbinder's "Garbage, the city and death"-- a German landscape of the soul].

No other recent "art event" has aroused so much public debate in Germany as Fassbinder's play "Garbage, City, Death" (1976). The controversy it sparked on its appearance has still not entirely died down. In a painstaking psychoanalytic interpretation Vogt first shows that the play achieves an artistic representation of the unconscious dilemma besetting the second generation of non-Jewish Germans in their relationship to National Socialism. In Fassbinder's play this dilemma, which is bound up with vicarious guilt feelings, is however only presented and not in any way worked out. The upshot is that all those forms of identification with German traditions that have been repudiated on a conscious level re-enter, as it were by the back door, and attain a new virulence. The author demonstrates that at the heart of the play a mechanism of guilt-refusal is operative that inverts the historical culprit-victim relation and makes the Germans themselves into the real victims. In the second part of his article Vogt is concerned to situate the play and the controversy surrounding it in a broader political context--Bitburg (1985), the "historians' conflict" (1986), Jenninger's speech (1988)--revealing a specific collective psychological inscape in present-day Germany for which, in its profounder well-springs, Fassbinder's play may be legitimately regarded as symptomatic. Fassbinder (born 1945) articulates for his generation aspects of an "ethnic disturbance" (George Devereux) which continues to persist precisely because there is a German past "that refuses to go away" (Ernst Nolte).

An alternative design of locked percutaneous device for skeletal extension through skin.

A skeletal extension bar (SEB) through the skin may be involved with many treatments of orthopedic diseases. A new locked percutaneous device (LPD), LPD-III, was designed for the SEB not only to allow the skin to bind onto the SEB, similarly to the LPD, but also to allow the skin binding to shift up or down the SEB while the body changes weight. Two designs of LPD-III were tried. The LPD-III-F was made from a formation of nylon hooks, fixed directly onto the SEB surface. Soft tissue can lock and shift onto the hook formation naturally. The LPD-III-S was made by attaching a stainless steel spring as a single row of rings on a nylon sleeve. Tissue can lock through the spring rings and the nylon sleeve can be manually shifted on the SEB to follow the change of thickness of soft tissue. The SEB is a stainless steel bar implanted in the sheep ilium through the skin and buttock. Two sheep were employed, both implanted with a SEB with LPD-III-F in one ilium and another SEB with LPD-III-S in the other ilium. Our experiment demonstrates that: first, both designs, LPD-III-F and LPD-III-S, function well as a skin junction shifting device; second, the LPD-III-F has abilities to re-bind the skin that not only repair damaged binding junction but also shift the skin binding up to overcome skin downgrowth; and third, powerful evidence certifies again that the mechanical connection exists in LPD.

[Total circular pharyngolaryngectomy. A method of reconstruction with a free forearm skin flap].

The reconstruction of the digestive tube after total circular pharyngo-laryngectomy continues to pose a number of problems. Fistulae and delayed healing of the mucosa are common problems after musculo-cutaneous flaps. They are due, on the one hand, to a spring effect of the flap which interferes with tubulisation and, on the other hand, to the problematical suture of the thick thoracic wall skin to the fine oesophageal mucosa. Free visceral plasties give first intention repairs with rapid return of eating, but they carry a mortality of 10 to 15%. The free ante-brachial plasty with a radial pedicle seems to be a satisfactory alternative due to the quality of the oesophageal reconstruction and the absence of mortality. The technique of forming the flap and the operative procedure are described. Five cases are presented. There were no failures and oral feeding could be re-commenced by the 21st day, on average.

Interactive effects of elevated ozone and carbon dioxide on growth and yield of leaf rust-infected versus non-infected wheat.

Spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Turbo) was grown from seedling emergence to maturity (129 days) in chambers simulating the physical climate and ozone pollution of a field site in Northern Germany from 1 April to 31 July with a mean 1-h daily maximum of 61.5-62.4 nl l(-1) ozone compared to a constant low level of 21.5-22.8 nl l(-1) ozone. The two ozone levels were combined with either a current (374.1-380.2 microl l(-1)) or enriched (610.6-615.0 microl l(-1)) CO(2) atmosphere. Additionally, a leaf rust epidemic (Puccinia recondita f. sp. tritici) was induced at tillering stage by repeated re-inoculations with the inoculum formed on the plants. Leaf rust disease was strongly inhibited by ozone, but largely unaffected by elevated CO(2). Ozone damage on leaves was strongly affected by CO(2) and infection. On infected plants, ozone lesions appeared 2-4 weeks earlier and were up to fourfold more severe compared to non-infected plants. Elevated CO(2) did not delay the onset of ozone lesions but it significantly reduced the severity of leaf damage. It also enhanced the photosynthetic rate of flag leaves and increased the water use efficiency, biomass formation and grain yield. The relative increases in growth and yield induced by CO(2) were much larger on ozone-stressed than on non-stressed plants. Both ozone and fungal infection reduced biomass formation, number of grains per plant, thousand grain weight and grain yield; however, adverse effects of leaf rust infection were more severe. Elevated CO(2) largely equalized the negative effects of ozone on the photosynthetic rate, growth and yield parameters, but was not capable of compensating for the detrimental effects of fungal infection. The data imply that the impact of ozone in the field cannot be estimated without considering the predisposing effects deriving from fungal infections and the compensating effects deriving from elevated CO(2).
