Two cases of focal occipital epilepsy with cerebral calcifications poorly responsive to antiepileptic treatment are described. In both cases coeliac disease was diagnosed and folic acid deficiency documented. A gluten-free diet and a brief supplementation with folic acid lead to a complete EEG and clinical normalization in one case and to a significant improvement of EEG and seizure control in the other.

The 20 patients described could be included in the group of patients diagnosed as ;idiopathic steatorrhoea'. However, their histories were short and diarrhoea was not a major feature. Since megaloblastic anaemia due to folic acid deficiency was a common feature it is suggested that these patients may form a homogeneous group and the diagnostic label of temperate sprue is suggested.
A new method for the determination of urinary formiminoglutamic acid (FIGLU) using conventional electrophoresis at 200 to 500 v. on cellulose acetate strips is reported. Experience in 166 determinations on 137 patients shows the method to be a simple, practical, and apparently sensitive one for the determination of FIGLU in the urine. Results of the application of the measurement of urinary FIGLU with histidine loading as a test for folic acid deficiency are also reported.

Melanosis involving the duodenum is extremely rare. We present endoscopic, microscopic, and histochemical studies of a patient with melanosis of the duodenum associated with a gastric ulcer and a folic acid deficiency. The pigment is similar to that observed in melanosis coli and histochemically does not stain like melanin or lipofuscin. The pigment disappeared with correction of the folate deficiency and healing of the gastric ulcer, suggesting a possible relationship with these entities.
The purpose of this study was to determine if erythrocytes from folic acid-deficient guinea pigs could be used as a model for the study of defects which have been reported in megaloblastic anemic patients. Reported defects include decreased deformability and abnormal membrane proteins. Red cell filterability was studied with polycarbonate sieves and cellulose filters. Membrane proteins were analyzed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in sodium in sodium dodecyl sulfate. Severe folate deficiency in guinea pigs caused no change in erythrocyte filterability or membrane proteins. Thus, the defects which have been reported in human folic acid or vitamin B-12 deficiency are not present in all animals with the same nutrient deficiency. Folate deficiency, however, did cause guinea pig erythrocytes to be markedly less susceptible to hypotonic lysis than cells from control animals, a feature which is not characteristic of human megaloblastic anemia.

Clinical and pathological findings in a case of subacute combined degeneration of the cord are described. The patient was a severe alcoholic but there was no vitamin B12 deficiency. Lesions were similar to those observed in Lichtheim's disease. Biological tests demonstrated frank folic acid deficiency, with very low serum and red cells levels. Clinical features included only mild macrocytic anemia, and flexion quadriplegia after a period of disorders of equilibrium. Higher functions were unaffected. Apart from alcoholism, no other toxic or digestive causative factors were found.
