Shear bond strength between composite resin and denture teeth: effect of tooth type and surface treatments.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the strength of the composite resin-denture tooth bond as affected by different tooth surface treatments. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Spectrum TPH was condensed on 112 mandibular first molar acrylic resin and composite resin denture teeth, which received seven different treatments: Four groups were treated with Prime & Bond NT adhesive, and three groups were treated with One Step adhesive. Four groups (two of each adhesive category) were treated with Composite Activator and air abrasion. In one group, AeliteFlo was used just before the condensation of Spectrum TPH. Bond strength was evaluated with a shear test device on a Monsanto testing machine. The results were evaluated statistically with two-way ANOVA and the Scheffé method. RESULTS: There was a significant interaction between denture tooth type and surface treatments. Bond strength of composite resin was greater to composite than to acrylic resin teeth when the bond was mediated only with adhesives. One Step adhesive and AeliteFlo resulted in a higher bond of composite resin to both types of teeth. Wetting tooth surfaces with Composite Activator did not increase the bond. CONCLUSION: When repairing denture teeth with composite resin and adhesives, the bond strength was higher with composite than with acrylic resin teeth, and there were differences between the adhesives used.

[Application of different flaps in immediate reconstruction of maxillary defect].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the method and clinical effect of temporal fascia flap, free forearm flap, free iliac bone transfer and immediate implant on reconstruction of maxillary defect. METHODS: From February 1999 to July 2002, 8 cases of maxillary defects due to excision of cancer were repaired immediately with temporal fascia flap, free forearm flap, free iliac bone transfer and implant. Out of 8 patients, there were 6 males and 2 females, aged 32-49 years, with a disease course of 3 months to 2 years. RESULTS: Free iliac bone and forearm flap survived in all 8 cases. Osseo-integration could be seen and the implants could be used for denture repair and chew function. After 6-12 months, X-ray examination showed iliac bone healing; facial shape and functional restoration were satisfactory. CONCLUSION: Temporal fascia flap, free forearm flap, free iliac bone transfer and immediate implant is an ideal method to repair maxillary defect immediately and reconstruct its function.

A technique for restoring abutments for removable partial dentures.

A technique was presented to restore a removable partial denture abutment so that the removable denture can continue to be used. The technique uses cold-curing acrylic resin in a rubber base impression form. The technique can be adapted to both direct and indirect procedures.

The Micro-Ring for full subperiosteal implant and prosthesis construction.

This technique was developed to overcome some of the difficulties experienced by the dentist in construction and maintenance of an implant denture. Laboratory construction time is greatly reduced in both the subperiosteal and the implant prosthesis. The greatest advantages of the technique are accurate and positive construction and predictable results.

Dental Implantation↗

A technique for the delivery of complete dentures.

This article describes a technique for the delivery of complete dentures which allows the patient to adapt to a mandibular prosthesis and, at the same time, to functionally make a final refitted mandibular impression.

Denture Design↗

Removal of partially loosened fixed partial dentures.

The technique described offers maximum safety for the abutment tooth and the probability of salvage of the existing restoration. The options of reusing the restoration or recementing it as a temporary restoration are both attractive.

Dental Abutments↗

Preventive prosthodontics: maxillary denture fracture.

Factors that contribute to the fracture and failure of the single maxillary denture have been discussed. Recognition of these factors and their prevention or correction will result in a single maxillary denture that is physiologically and functionally acceptable for the patient for an extended period without chronic denture failure.

Soldering of removable partial dentures.

Both high- and low-heat removable partial denture alloys were soldered with combinations of different solders and heat sources. The soldered specimens were subjected to tensile strength testing, and a ranking of joint strength was developed. Joint strengths that were 85% as strong as the as-cast metal were created in both alloy types when 0.800 fine solder was used with an electrosoldering device as a heat source. All other combinations tested resulted in greater reductions in joint strength.

Fabrication of a replacement for a broken attachment.

A clinical and laboratory procedure is described for remaking a lost attachment for a removable partial denture rather than remaking the entire denture. This method enables continued use of the removable partial denture while the new attachment is made in the laboratory.
