Determining the radiation exposure from visual display terminals used in dentistry.

Computers are rapidly becoming incorporated into all aspects of dentistry, including administrative, didactic and research functions. Of particular concern for dentists are women of childbearing age who are regularly employed as receptionists and secretaries in private dental practices and teaching institutions. Thermoluminescent dosimeter pellets of lithium fluoride were attached directly to the surface of 10 VDT's of varying age and from different manufacturers. The purpose was to compare the amounts of radiation emitted from personal computers that are commonly used in dental practices and teaching institutions. All of the machines tested met USNRC regulations for safety by emitting only negligible amounts of radiation.

A user-friendly biological workstation.

Learning methods developed by artificial intelligence research teams are very efficient for biological sequences analysis but they need running on large computers accessed by terminals. These computers are interfaced with standard displays involving long and unpleasant alphanumerical data handling. The "biological work station" is a personal computer with a color graphic screen providing a user-friendly interface for the artificial intelligence learning programs running on large computers. It provides to biologist a graphical convenient tool for sequence analysis built with efficient man-machine communication methods such as multiwindows, icons and mouse selection. It allows the biologist to edit and display sequences in an efficient and natural way, showing off directly on color pictures the data and the results of learning programs.

Computer assisted quantitation of terminal hepatic vein connective tissue in the rat.

Computer assisted image analysis has been used to quantify the cellular and extracellular connective tissue component of rat liver terminal hepatic venules, in control animals and those exposed to 40% ethanol in drinking water. A significant relationship existed between the size of the terminal hepatic venule and the amount of connective tissue it contained in 14 of 15 controls and 17 of 18 ethanol exposed rats. Thickening of the terminal hepatic vein wall assessed to be present in ethanol treated rats by direct observation was confirmed by image analysis in all cases (p < 0.01). Significant differences between treated and control livers (p < 0.05) were detected by image analysis when not apparent to human observers. Sensitive quantitative assessment of terminal hepatic vein wall thickening was thus achieved by computerized analysis of liver sections.

Local area networks for radiology.

This article is a tutorial on local area networks (LAN) for radiology applications. LANs are being implemented in radiology departments for the management of text and images, replacing the inflexible point-to-point wiring between two devices (computer-to-terminal). These networks enable the sharing of computers and computer devices, reduce equipment costs, and provide improved reliability. Any LAN must include items from the following four categories: transmission medium, topology, data transmission mode, and access protocol. Media for local area networks are twisted pair, coaxial, and optical fiber cables. The topology of these networks include the star, ring, bus, tree, and circuit-switching. Data transmission modes are either analog signals or digital signals. Access protocol methods include the broadcast bus system and the ring system. A performance measurement for a LAN is the throughput rate as a function of the number of active computer nodes. Standards for LANs help to ensure that products purchased from multiple manufacturers will operate successfully.

[Hygienic evaluation of the work of technical school students on the video display terminals].

Psychologic and hygienic examination of students working on display calculating complexes (DCC) DCC-2 and DCC-3 during the extra study time revealed the features of their functional status caused by the DCC design and work schedule. Positive role of eye exercises during the work was stressed. 6-hours duration of students' work was considered as unfavourable. The duration of work must be reduced to 3 hours, prophylactic measures (eye and physical exercises) are to be added.

[The function of the free-radical oxidation system in computer workers using video display terminals].

Programmers working with video-display terminals showed essential disorders of the functional state of the free-radical oxidation system indicating an essential overstrain of this system, presence of its latent insufficiency characteristic of activation of the lipid peroxidation. Chronic overstrain of the free-radical oxidation system may lead to decompensation and formation of a free-radical pathologic process. Prophylactic measures for this category of workers are recommended.
