[Clinical and experimental study on oral liquor night-cough tranquiller in treating infantile cough].

Oral Liquor of Night-Cough Tranquiller (NCT) was used in treating infantile cough and 128 patients have been treated. The result revealed that the total effective rate was 95.3%. In comparing with other group of patients treated with the common cold cough syrup and Caps. cephalexini, the latter has a clinical effective rate of 81.0%. A significant difference existed between the above-mentioned two groups (P < 0.05). According to the animal experiment, the NCT has some outstanding pharmacologic functions such as anti-tussive function, phlegm reducing and sedation, etc. While the LD50 of NCT has not been detected which indicated that this preparation has negligible side effect.

Cough . 6: Which investigations are most useful in the diagnosis of chronic cough?

There is no consensus as to the best diagnostic strategy for chronic cough. Many protocols combine empirical trials of treatment with laboratory investigations. More precise diagnostic tools and improved therapeutic options are required. Until then, the management of chronic cough will remain a clinical challenge.

[Humoral reaction to Bordetella pertussis antigens: pertussis toxin, filamentous hemagglutinin and lipopolysaccharide in children with clinical symptoms of whooping cough. II. Occurence and level of B. pertussis antigens in children with suspected whooping cough].

The aim of this study was to determine and evaluate IgG, IgM and IgA levels to pertussis toxin (PT), filamentous hemagglutinin (FHA) and endotoxin (LPS) of B. pertussis in children with clinical symptoms of whooping cough. The serum samples obtained from 265 children (age range: 2 months-16 years) suspected of pertussis were examined by indirect haemagglutination (IH) and ELISA tests. Higher antibody level was most frequently observed in IgA class to PT, FHA and LPS in 45.3%, 35.1% and 66% of pertussis patients sera respectively. The least positive results were obtained in IgM class to PT and FHA (in 9.8% and 2.6% of children sera respectively) but in the case of LPS applied as the antigen in ELISA, higher IgM level was determined in 46.8% of pertussis patients sera. The four times increase of antibody level to LPS determined by IH was observed in 86.7% of children suspected of pertussis. Humoral response to B. pertussis infection is mainly connected with higher IgA level to PT, FHA, LPS and IgM to LPS in children with clinical symptoms of whooping cough.

Cough. 4: Cough in asthma and eosinophilic bronchitis.

Airway eosinophilia and cough may be associated with asthma and with non-asthmatic eosinophilic bronchitis. Whether cough variant asthma and eosinophilic bronchitis are distinct entities or a pathophysiological spectrum needs further examination.

Cough. 1: Chronic cough in adults.

The investigation and treatment of chronic cough in adults is generally rewarding, provided there is an understanding of its aetiology, particularly when it arises from sites outside the respiratory tract.

Randomized single-blind trial in general practice comparing the efficacy and palatability of two cough linctus preparations, 'Pholcolix' and 'Actifed' Compound, in children with acute cough.

Two hundred and seventeen patients between 6 and 12 years of age suffering from acute cough took part in a randomized, single-blind study comparing 'Pholcolix' and 'Actifed' Compound. No significant difference in efficacy was demonstrated but analysis of palatability components (taste, smell, aftertaste and feeling in the mouth) showed numerical superiority for 'Pholcolix' for all parameters, with a high degree of significance for overall taste. 'Pholcolix' caused significantly fewer side-effects, with 'Actifed' Compound causing markedly more drowsiness after daytime dosage.

Treatment of cough and dyspnea due to acute bronchitis by plaster for cough and dyspnea--a report of 735 cases.

In the light of the theory of treating the internal disease externally, an externally used plaster for treating cough and dyspnea due to acute bronchitis (Ke Chuan Yi Tie Kang [symbol: see text]-[symbol: see text]) was successfully applied to 735 cases of acute bronchitis (the treatment group), with the other 423 cases treated with routine western drugs as controls. The results showed that the cure rate in the treatment group was significantly higher than that in the control group (P < 0.01); and that in the treatment group, the cure rate for the wind-cold type of acute bronchitis was significantly higher than that for the wind-heat type of acute bronchitis (P < 0.01).

Efficacy of whooping-cough vaccines used in the United Kingdom before 1968. A preliminary report to the Director of the Public Health Laboratory service by the Public Health Laboratory Service Whooping-Cough Committee and Working Party.

In a large survey of the efficacy of pertussis vaccines made in 33 areas in the United Kingdom during the period 1 November 1966 to 31 October 1967 a total of 3,564 households were investigated. Nine hundred and seventy-seven strains of Bordetella pertussis and 6 strains of Bord. parapertussis were isolated from persons in 792 households. After contact in the home 56% of fully vaccinated children under 5 years of age developed a paroxysmal cough, and in more than two-thirds of these patients the diagnosis was confirmed bacteriologically. This suggests that pertussis vaccination was not very effective. A comparison with the attack rate in unvaccinated children also indicates a poor protection from vaccination.NONE OF THE FOLLOWING FACTORS APPEARED TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE POOR PROTECTION AFFORDED BY VACCINATION: vaccination in early infancy, a long interval since vaccination, and the absence of booster doses.Almost all the children in the survey had been given vaccines from a single manufacturer, and therefore a comparison of the efficacy of vaccines prepared by different manufacturers was inconclusive. All the vaccinated children in the survey had been vaccinated before or during 1967. The efficacy of current preparations will require to be assessed by continuing surveillance.

Codeine and its alternates for pain and cough relief . 4. Potential alternates for cough relief.

In this report-the fourth of a series on codeine and its alternates for pain and cough relief-an attempt is made to evaluate, on the basis of experimental and clinical data, and wherever possible in comparison with codeine, the effectiveness of a number of antitussive substances currently in clinical use. In the discussion of the undesired side-effects particular attention is paid to the risk of dependence and abuse.
