Selected list of books and journals for the small medical library.

The interrelationship of print and electronic media in the hospital library and the relevance of the "Selected List" in 1985 are discussed in the introduction to this revised list of 583 books and 138 journals. The list is meant to be a selection guide for the small or medium-size library in a hospital or comparable medical facility, or a core collection for a consortium of small hospital libraries. Books and journals are categorized by subject; the book list is followed by an author/editor index and the subject list of journals by an alphabetical title listing. Items suggested for initial purchase by smaller libraries are indicated by asterisks. To purchase the entire collection of books and to pay for 1985 subscriptions to all the journals would require about $45,200. The cost of only the asterisked items totals approximately $16,100.

Dusting off old books: comments on classic gynecologic pathology books of yesteryear.

Selected outstanding books from the older literature on gynecological pathology are reviewed with emphasis on drawing attention to the abundant helpful information and outstanding illustrations that are worthy of review by present-day pathologists. The first three works are Cancer of the Uterus, Myomata of the Uterus, and Adenomyoma of the Uterus by Thomas S. Cullen. The senior author of the second book is Howard A. Kelly even though he did not have any role in the preparation of the text; he was given senior authorship by Dr. Cullen as a token of appreciation to his mentor. The next book, Fibroids and Allied Tumors by Cuthbert Lockyer, is particularly noteworthy for the quality of the numerous color illustrations. The final book on the uterus is The Cervix Uteri and Its Diseases by C. Frederic Fluhmann. It provides detailed coverage of the normal and pathologic aspects of the cervix, including the endocervical clefts (glands) and their abnormalities. The next three books are on the ovary: Ovarian Tumors by Samuel H. Geist, Atlas of Ovarian Tumors by Gemma Barzilai, and Endocrine Pathology of the Ovary by John McLean Morris and Robert E. Scully. The first is notable for the quality of the coverage of clinical and gross aspects of ovarian tumors and the second for the quality of the description of the microscopic features. The third book expanded the range of functioning ovarian tumors by showing that this could be a feature of tumors not usually considered hormonally active and also discussed in detail the endocrine function of non-neoplastic lesions. The final two books cover general gynecological pathology: Manual of Obstetrical and Gynaecological Pathology by John H. Teacher and Gynecological and Obstetrical Pathology by Emil Novak. Both have particularly outstanding coverage of normal histology and non-neoplastic lesions.

Dusting off another shelf: further comments on classic gynecologic pathology books of yesteryear.

Selected outstanding books from the older literature on gynecologic pathology are reviewed with emphasis on drawing attention to the abundant helpful information and often outstanding illustrations that are worthy of review by present-day pathologists. This represents a follow up to a previous similar essay that appeared in Volume 19:67-84, 2000. The first three books cover general gynecological pathology: Gynecological Pathology by Carl Abel; Gynecological and Obstetrical Pathology by Robert T. Frank; and Haines and Taylor's Gynaecological Pathology by Magnus Haines and Claud W. Taylor. Each of them emphasizes the time-honored problem of mimicry of malignancy by diverse benign lesions or even aspects of normal histology. Awareness of the clinical background and cooperation between the clinician and pathologist are emphasized. The other three books considered are all devoted largely or exclusively to the ovary: Ovarian Tumors by Hans Selye, Ovarian Neoplasms, Morphology, and Classification by Karel Motlik, and Special Tumors of Ovary and Testis and Related Extragonadal Lesions by Gunnar Teilum. The book of Selye has a truly remarkable encyclopedic coverage of the older literature, the references being so comprehensive that they are presented in a separate volume. A number of aspects of the histopathology of ovarian tumors that have been emphasized in recent years are noted in Selye's book. Dr. Motlik's book presents a very high quality consideration of the differential diagnosis of ovarian tumors. Teilum's book contains a masterful account of the histopathology of germ cell tumors emphasizing a neoplasm with which his name will always be associated, the yolk sac tumor (endodermal sinus tumor). Numerous beautiful and refreshingly large illustrations are provided, and Dr. Teilum's interest in comparative pathology is evident in the pages, his linking of the famous Schiller-Duval bodies with the endodermal sinuses of the rat placenta, being the most notable example.

Death education coverage in selected health education books and periodicals.

This article represents an attempt to ascertain the quantity of death and dying literature within selected health education periodicals and introductory health education books during the past 7 years. The study is part of an ongoing effort by the author to determine relationships between health education and death education. Approximately two-thirds of the general health education books reviewed now include chapters or sections on death-related phenomena. Four nationally refereed periodicals, viewed by the author as most useful to the health educator, have also been publishing a considerable number of death education pieces in recent years. Involvement by health educators, via the publication of death and dying information, should be viewed as a positive gesture toward achieving multidisciplinary goals within death education.

Furosemide for symptomatic patent ductus arteriosus in indomethacin-treated infants.

BACKGROUND: Inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis mediates closure of the ductus arteriosus and renal side effects after indomethacin administration. Because furosemide increases prostaglandin production, it could potentially help prevent indomethacin-related toxicity but also decrease ductal response to indomethacin. OBJECTIVES: The primary objectives of this review were to assess (1) whether furosemide affects the incidence of failure of ductal closure after indomethacin and that of indomethacin-related toxicity and (2) the effect of furosemide on mid-term and long-term outcome. The secondary objective was to determine whether the effect of furosemide on renal function and water balance depends on prior extracellular volume (assessed by blood urea nitrogen [BUN]/creatinine ratio). SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched electronic databases (Medline, Embase and Cochrane) and selected abstract books, without language restriction. SELECTION CRITERIA: We selected studies with (1) random allocation to either indomethacin alone or indomethacin and furosemide and (2) analysis of either short-term risk-benefit ratio of furosemide, mid- or long-term outcome, or the relationship between extracellular volume at study entry and changes in renal function. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: We assessed studies for possible bias and for quality of assessment of ductal patency. We assessed categorical variables using relative risk and absolute risk reduction. We assessed the effects of furosemide on renal function and fluid balance by comparing changes from baseline in the treatment group with those in controls. Subsets were determined a priori based on BUN/creatinine ratio at study entry. MAIN RESULTS: All 3 studies fulfilling the entry criteria had limitations, including possible or definite bias. There was substantial heterogeneity among studies. Furosemide administration did not significantly increase the risk of failure of ductal closure; however, sample size was insufficient to rule out even a 31% increase. In the subset with initial BUN/creatinine ratio > 20 mg/mg, 2 of 18 patients receiving furosemide could not complete a 3-dose course of indomethacin because of toxicity. Minimal or no information was available about any of the other main outcome variables. Furosemide increased urine output regardless of the initial BUN/creatinine ratio, leading to a 5% weight loss during a 3-dose course, an undesired effect in patients with initial BUN/creatinine ratio > 20 mg/mg. Furosemide increased creatinine clearance only in patients with initial BUN/creatinine ratio <20 mg/mg. REVIEWER'S CONCLUSIONS: There is not enough evidence to support the administration of furosemide to premature infants treated with indomethacin for symptomatic patent ductus arteriosus. Furosemide appears to be contraindicated in the presence of dehydration in those infants.

[Presentation of the "physical handicap" topic in six selected children's books--a critical analysis].

Since the late 60s, reality-oriented books for children and young people have increasingly turned to subject-matters and issues involving social/societal criticism, among them the theme of "being disabled". In the discussion on the degree to which media, and books in particular, do affect children's attitudes and socialization, it has been underlined that media take effect in the development of specific attitudinal patterns and behavioural dispositions in those cases where the recipient has not already formed a "completed" opinion of the topic at hand. This in particular is true in children of primary school age, and above all relates to their view of the disabled person. Six selected children's books were reviewed critically, based on a catalogue of criteria permitting coverage of as wide as spectrum as possible of "physical disability" and allied subjects. Summarizing, it is noted that the books reviewed do give children the opportunity, and partly in an excellent manner, of gaining insights into the situation of disabled persons. The potential for didactical treatment in primary classrooms is pointed out.
