[Correlation between immunological reactivity and the fat-carbohydrate metabolism. Influence of phenformin].

Based on the conceptions of the relationship between energy and adaptation-immunological systems a number of hormone-metabolic indices were compared with immune reactivity as evidenced by skin tests and rosette-formation reaction. It is shown that lowering of immunological indices in oncological patients is associated with a decreased sensitivity of dexametasone suppression of cortisol, an increased concentration of 11-oxycorticosteroids in blood, a higher level of triglycerides, cholestrol, beta-lipoproteins and less glucose tolerance. The use of phenformin during 3 months in patients with atherosclerosis resulted in a considerable increase of the index of phytohemagglutinin stimulated blasttransformation of lymphocytes and rosette-formation reaction. This effect was associated with normalization of lipid metabolism indices.

[Plasma ACTH, STH and other hormone levels in various groups under chlormethiazole, haloperidol or reserpine load in alchohol delirium, alcoholic hallucinations, and chronic alcoholism].

Studies of 135 men with safely diagnosed alcohol delirium mostly revealed increased ACTH blood values when sober and increased T4 values in about 1/3 of these patients. There is a correlation between the psychiatric clinical picture of the alcohol delirium and the ACTH content of the plasma. Under load with chloromethiazole, halperidole or with reserpine, there is a significant drop in the increased ACTH and T4 values. In an acute alcoholic hallucinosis (n=16) similar endocrinological changes as in most cases of safely diagnosed alcohol delirium were observed. In a chronic alcoholic hallucinosis (n=11) and in chronic alcoholics (n=31) the endocrinological values were similar to those of patients after alcohol delirium.

Effects of norgestrel and metyrapone on pituitary-adrenal-ovarian function.

To assess the effects of d-norgestrel on pituitary-adrenal-ovarian function, basal levels and responses to metyrapone of urinary 17-ketogenic steroids (17-KGS) and 17-ketosteroids (17-KS), plasma cortisol (F), plasma delta4-androstenedione (A), plasma testosterone (T), plasma estrone (E1) and estradiol (E2), plasma and urinary LH and FSH were determined in 10 normal women before and while taking d-norgestrel 1 mg/day. Cortisol secretion rate (CSR) and binding capacities of cortisol binding globulin (CBG) and testosterone-estradiol binding globulin (TeBG) were also measured. Norgestrel did not significantly alter 17-KGS, 17-KS, F, LH, FSH, CSR, or the 17-KGS and 17-KS responses to metyrapone. Norgestrel reduced TeBG binding capacity but not CBG binding capacity. Norgestrel competitively inhibited the binding of dihydrotestosterone to TeBG under in vitro conditions. Levels of T, E2, and E1 were reduced by norgestrel. All measured hormone levels except FSH were increased following metyrapone prior to norgestrel administration. Norgestrel completely blocked the metyrapone-induced increases in LH and E2 and markedly reduced the E1 increase. Metyrapone reduced E2 during norgestrel treatment.

[Effects of a vagolytic substance on the circadian rhythm of the ACTH-secreting system in man].

The circadian rhythm of plasma cortisol and urinary 17-hydroxy-corticosteroids has been studied in 6 normal volunteers both in basal conditions and after the administration of a single dose of 30 mg of a banthine derivative (the beta methyl-beta-isopropylaminoethyl ester bromide of xantene-9-carbonic acid, "Pervagal") given orally once a day at different hours (midnight, 4 AM, 8 AM, noon, 4 PM, 8 PM). The vagolytic drug inhibits the cortisol secretion only when administered at 4 PM, 8 PM or midnight, whereas it is ineffective when given at different hours. If don't exist circadian variations of the bio-availability of the drug employed, our results suggest that also in human beings as well as in experimental animals, the cholinergic mechanisms are effective, over all if not exclusively, in starting the circadian activation of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal system.

[Hormone and mediator content in the blood of the adrenals and in the peripheral blood in hypertension].

The concentration of the fractions of corticosteroids, aldosterone, catecholamines, and cyclic nucleotides (cAMP and cGMP) in blood of the adrenal veins and the activity of renin in blood of the renal veins were studied in 22 patients with stages IIA and IIB hypertensive disease. At the same time the content of these substances in the peripheral blood was determined and compared with the level of steroid and catecholamine excretion in the daily urine. An increase in the content of free 11 OCS and F fractions in the peripheral blood and blood of the adrenal veins was revealed in all patients examined.

[Serum neuraminic acid level in patients with cerebrovascular disorders].

The authors determined the level of neuraminic acid in the serum of 50 patients with encephalomalacia and 25 patients with cerebral haemorrhages on the 1st, 3d and 7th days of the disease. Twenty healthy subjects served as controls. A statistically significant rise in the concentration of this substance was observed in both groups of patients throughout the whole period of observations.

[Certain pathogenetic mechanisms of development of atherosclerosis in dogs, induced without the use of cholesterol].

Chronic investigations (up to 3 years) conducted in dogs have evidenced that periodic disturbances of vascular permeability produced by using dicoumarin with a long-term blocking of the thyroid function greatly aggravate pathological manifestations induced by the action of 6-methylthiouracil. They result in the development in the animals of endogenous hypercholesterinemia, elevated content in the blood of beta-lipoproteins and in a periodic rise of the arterial pressure. These changes were particularly spectacular at the final stage of the experiment in animals with marked manifestations of atherosclerosis and were accompanied by reduced stand-by potentialities of the adrenal gland, disruption of metabolic processes in the myocardium along with the slowed down resorption of NaI131 from the heart muscle. The sensitivity of the heart to adrenalin was down too.
