The study of 632 teenagers has revealed that young people are the main group of risk with respect to the spread of virus hepatitides B and C, HIV infection. In accordance with risk factors, the teenagers have been divided into 4 groups: using drugs by injection; leading sexual life; using drugs and leading sexual life; having no risk factor indicated. The presence of hepatitis B and hepatitis C virus infection has been established in 1.42 and 1.27% of cases respectively. This is due to the frequent change of partners, the use of narcotic drugs since school age, the absence of necessary information and contacts with parents. When considering this problem, mass media have been found to play an important role. The presence of reliable information breaking old stereotypes may help parents pay greater and better attention to the upbringing and health of their children.
The analysis of the possibility of suffering injuries at a work place, their causes, the knowledge of HIV infection, attitude towards the infected person is presented. The work was carried out, starting from 1990. Every 2 years the anonymous questioning of members of the medical personnel of different specialties at medical institutions of different profile and level was carried out. Five questionings on injuries suffered during work, the knowledge of HIV infection and the attitude of members of the medical profession towards HIV-positive persons. In most cases injuries are inflicted by injection needles (79%), during operations (12%), by splinters of broken medical glassware and appliances (3%) and in other cases (6%). In 91% of cases injuries caused by needles occur in the process of placing caps on the needles. In the course of 9 years changes in the level of knowledge and the attitude towards HIV-infected persons occurred. Changes in the outlook and the knowledge of AIDS were due to the positive influence of intensive education directly at work places.

A total of 1210 patients with spontaneous pneumothorax (SP) and spontaneous pyopneumothorax (SPP)' were treated at the Surgery Unit of the Santariskes Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases Hospital in 1960-1997. Of them, 533 (45.7%) patients had the conditions of tuberculous origin and 657 (54.3%) had nonspecific SP. Treatment with punctures was indicated for closed SP and degrees I and II collapse. If it was ineffective, the authors applied drainage 4-5 days later. The indications for this treatment were ineffective punctures, open and tension SP, pleural fluid, and SPP. If following 5-6 days of aspiration, the lung did not restore, surgery was made. A total of 1108 (91.6%) patients fully recovered and 102 (8.4%) died.

While the U.S. Bureau of the Census has had a long-standing policy of abstaining from enumerating the religious beliefs or backgrounds of the American people, at least two-thirds of the Jewish population of the United States has been enumerated in decennial censuses and sample surveys in the guise of persons of Russian stock or origin. This has come about through the migration policy of the old Russian Empire and the statistical categories utilized by American immigration authorities and by the U. S. Bureau of the Census for immigrants and their children. Comparisons between the returns from an ethnic survey and a survey on the religious composition demonstrate the close congruence between persons of Russian stock or descent and American Jews on the national level.

Phenotype and allele frequencies of the genetically dimorphic system determining urinary excretion of beta-aminoisobutyric acid (BAIB) were studied in population samples of Buryats from the Aginskii Buryat Autonomous District and Lithuanians from Vilnius and in patients with coronary atherosclerosis (CA) from both populations. Frequency of allele BAIB*b, which determines high BAIB excretion, proved to be more than twice higher in Buryats compared with the population sample of Lithuanians (0.620 versus 0.289, respectively). The proportion of individuals with high BAIB excretion in CA patients of either ethnic sample was twice higher than in the corresponding control sample. Frequency of allele BAIB*b in CA patients and healthy individuals was 0.348 and 0.242, respectively, in the Lithuanian population and 0.775 and 0.557, respectively, in the Buryat population. Thus, assessment of urinary excretion of BAIB proved to be prognostically valuable. The method used to detect a variation in BAIB excretion is relatively inexpensive, simple, and suitable for mass screening of patients and healthy individuals (population control). After additional testing with representative samples, the method can be used as an accessory diagnostic test in patients with cardiovascular disorders.
