A cover up? Potential risks of wearing theatre clothing outside theatre.

A report from the Hospital Infection Society Working Group (2002) examined ritualistic practices in theatre and evidence was sought to establish which practices could be supported with clear scientific evidence. The report stated that there is little or no research to show that wearing theatre attire outside the theatre and returning without changing into clean theatre attire increases wound infection rates. It is difficult to implement infection control practices on a scientific basis as there is often a lack of evidence to support the practice. Moreover, many practices are grounded in 'this is the way things are done around here' (Ward 2000).

[Compression of body by clothing--increase in urinary norepinephrine excretion caused by foundation garments].

The urinary excretions of norepinephrine (NE) and epinephrine (EP) were measured to investigate the physiological effects of girdles worn by women to look attractive. 1) The urinary excretion of NE was remarkably increased by the wearing of a girdle in all the subjects examined, whether living conditions and stimulations were changed or remained unchanged. 2) The urinary excretion of NE was increased by wearing a girdle, regardless of the type of girdle or its intensity of compression. 3) The urinary excretion of NE tended to increase more by the wearing of a bodysuit having a large area of body compression than by the wearing of a girdle having a narrow area of compression. 4) The urinary excretion of NE showed no specific pattern of change, even when the subjects were accustomed to the use of a girdle. These findings may indicate that a girdle of even the best-fitting size exerts a kind of stress on the human body.

Reduction of contamination at total hip replacement by special working clothes.

We assessed wound, air and operative field contamination at 50 total hip operations, performed in a zonal ventilation system. Theatre staff wore either a specially designed polypropylene non-woven coverall or conventional cotton shirt and trousers. The surgeons wore partially impermeable operating gowns. The polypropylene coverall was associated with significantly lower air and wound counts. The coverall was warmer than cotton but judged to be acceptable. The combined use of zonal ventilation and the coverall achieved ultra-clean air conditions.

Effect of clothing type on validity of air-displacement plethysmography.

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the validity of an air-displacement plethysmography system (AP) within the general population, while wearing (1) a racing-type swimsuit (AP(SS)) and (2) participant's personal undergarments (AP(UG)), against hydrodensitometry (HW). Fifty women and 50 men were measured for body volume, density, and fat percentage by HW and compared with AP(SS) and AP(UG). For women, AP(UG) and AP(SS) were similar, although significant differences (p < 0.001) were observed between AP(UG) and HW and between AP(SS) and HW. For men, there was no significant difference between AP(UG) and HW; however, significant differences (P < or = 0.01) were found between AP(UG) and AP(SS) and between AP(SS) and HW. The small discrepancy in measured values between AP and HW are within the measurement error for the instrumentation and these data support the use of AP for determination of body composition in adults across a wide range of body size (body mass index [BMI] 17.7-35.2 kg.m(-2)) and age (18-57 y). Participants' personal undergarments provide a practical alternative to a spandex swimsuit when measuring body composition by AP in women but not in men.

[Remaining solvents in dry cleaned over clothes].

We examined remaining solvents in dry cleaned trousers to estimate the magnitude of environmental pollution. A cleaning solvent of petroleum hydrocarbon was analyzed by means of capillary column mass spectrum gas chromatography. Principal ingredients were identified to be nonane, decane and undecane. The same main components were detected in dry cleaned trousers. Total amounts of evaporated vapor from a pair of trousers (480 g) in 5 days after dry cleaning were nonane (0.73 mg), decane (1.53 mg) and undecane (1.09 mg). The levels on the fifth day were 5%(nonane), 18%(decane) and 32%(undecane) of the first day's concentration, respectively. The half times of the remaining solvents were 1.0 day (nonane), 1.7 days (decane) and 2.7 days (undecane), respectively.
