Effectiveness of Rack Sanitation Procedures for Elimination of Bacteria from Automatic Watering Manifolds.

An important responsibility of animal care programs is to protect research animals from exposure to potentially pathogenic microorganisms. To validate the need for steam sterilization of rodent automatic watering racks, we evaluate the post-sanitation microbial contamination of experimentally inoculated racks and of racks that had been used to house conventional mice. We tested three sanitation protocols: rack-washer sanitation without manifold flush, sanitation that included manifold flush, and sanitation that included manifold flush followed by autoclaving. Rack sanitation, with or without manifold flush, did not reliably eliminate microbial flora from the lixits or manifold drainage water. A total of 43% of all non-autoclaved racks were positive for bacterial contamination after sanitation, and racks that had been used for conventional animal housing were more frequently positive than were experimentally inoculated racks (79% vs 18%). These data indicate that steam sterilization is necessary for eliminating bacteria from automatic watering systems. These observations are particularly important in light of increasing numbers of immune-impaired rodents that may be inadvertently and unnecessarily exposed to microbial pathogens via the automatic watering system.

The effects of quinidine and verapamil on electrically induced automaticity in the ventricular myocardium of guinea pig.

The effects of 2 to 10 muM verapamil (1-5 mg/l) and 3.8 to 7.6 muM quinidine (2-4 mg/l) on automaticity in ventricular myocardial fibers were examined. Papillary muscles from guinea pigs were mounted in a sucrose gap chamber and transmembrane potential was recorded by standard microelectrode techniques. Automaticity was induced with depolarizing currents of various strengths. Verapamil reduced phase 4 slope at all maximum diastolic membrane potentials. It also caused a selective reduction of the overshoot of action potentials arising from less negative maximum diastolic potentials. During exposure to verapamil, increased [Ca]0 partially restored action potential overshoot, but phase 4 slope was further reduced. Epinephrine caused a partial or complete reversal of verapamil-induced phase 4 slope depression but usually did not restore action potential overshoot. Quinidine reduced phase 4 slope at all maximum diastolic potentials. There was less marked reduction of action potential overshoot than in the case of verapamil. Epinephrine caused a partial reversal of the reduction of phase 4 slope produced by quinidine. It is concluded that although both verapamil and quinidine reduce automaticity in ventricular fibers, verapamil may be more effective in reducing the amplitude and occurrence of action potentials arising from low maximum diastolic potentials.

Neural correlates of the automatic processing of threat facial signals.

The present study examined whether automaticity, defined here as independence from attentional modulation, is a fundamental principle of the neural systems specialized for processing social signals of environmental threat. Attention was focused on either scenes or faces presented in a single overlapping display. Facial expressions were neutral, fearful, or disgusted. Amygdala responses to facial expressions of fear, a signifier of potential physical attack, were not reduced with reduced attention to faces. In contrast, anterior insular responses to facial expressions of disgust, a signifier of potential physical contamination, were reduced with reduced attention. However, reduced attention enhanced the amygdala response to disgust expressions; this enhanced amygdala response to disgust correlated with the magnitude of attentional reduction in the anterior insular response to disgust. These results suggest that automaticity is not fundamental to the processing of all facial signals of threat, but is unique to amygdala processing of fear. Furthermore, amygdala processing of fear was not entirely automatic, coming at the expense of specificity of response. Amygdala processing is thus specific to fear only during attended processing, when cortical processing is undiminished, and more broadly tuned to threat during unattended processing, when cortical processing is diminished.

[Is cheating with automatic perimetry possible?].

INTRODUCTION: Automatic perimetry examination requires the patient's cooperation, but the programs used check response validity. This study evaluated the possibility of patient cheating on this examination. MATERIALS AND METHOD: This study investigated 27 visual fields of automatic perimetry with patients who had no ophthalmological history. Each subject had to reproduce a visual field loss that was observed for 5 minutes (two diffuse losses, five fields reflecting hemianopsia, four reflecting quadranopsia, two tubular losses, five nasal steps, nine absolute and arciform losses). The 24-2 Fastpac of the Humphrey field analyzer and the G2 of the Octopus perimeter were used for this study. RESULTS: Simple deficits were easy to reproduce, but visual field defects are often deeper and simulated test results tend to be too perfect. On the other hand, complex defects such as arciform scotoma or nasal steps were more difficult to reproduce. Visual field defect simulations were exaggerated beyond what was reasonable. CONCLUSION: This study reports on whether it is possible to cheat with automatic perimetry. The different parameters analyzed by computer programs are not able to detect cheating patients.

Trypsinization of monkey-kidney tissue: an automatic method for the preparation of cell suspensions.

A study of some of the factors which influenced the rate and amount of cells released from tissue fragments during trypsinization led to a revision of the method described by Youngner for monkey kidney. The revision includes the use of a glass mixing-chamber and magnetic stirrer in place of the Waring blendor. Simpler to use, the revised method has been found to yield, consistently, about 7 x 10 (7) cells per g of kidney tissue, or from two to three times more than that obtained by the earlier method. The revised method may be done either manually or automatically. A simple glass apparatus which automatically regulates the continuous addition of trypsin and removal of cell suspension during trypsinization has been developed. It operates reliably over a threefold volume range and a varying flow rate. The yield of cells per gram of tissue treated in the automatic trypsinizer is about 30% greater than when the change of fluids is done manually.

Laparoscopic oophorectomy: comparative study of ligatures, bipolar coagulation, and automatic stapling devices.

OBJECTIVE: We assessed laparoscopic oophorectomy using three techniques. METHODS: From January 1989 to October 1991, 65 patients underwent laparoscopic oophorectomy using three techniques: bipolar coagulation, pretied ligature placement, and automatic stapling devices. The patients were aged 18-57 years and had the indications of pain, ovarian endometriosis, adhesions, unilateral blocked tubes, breast cancer, and recurrent benign ovarian cysts. The primary method of adnexal removal involved the automatic stapling device in 17, bipolar coagulation in 30, and pretied ligatures in 18. RESULTS: Total anesthesia time ranged from 45-123 minutes, with means of 77 minutes for pretied ligatures, 84 minutes for bipolar coagulation, and 84 minutes for automatic stapling devices. Sixty-two patients were discharged within 23 hours, two stayed two nights, and one stayed three nights. Rectus muscle bleeding and hematoma formation were the only complications in this series. CONCLUSION: All three methods of laparoscopic oophorectomy are effective, with similar operative times and uniformly good results for the patients.

[Value of an algorithm of automatic adaptation of the atrio-ventricular delay to the instantaneous atrial rate in cardiac stimulation].

It has been suggested that an algorithm of automatic adaptation of the AV delay to the instantaneous atrial rate be introduced into the program of DDD pacemakers to reproduce the physiological adaptation of the PR interval to effort, characterised by progressive shortening inversely linearly related to the heart rate. In order to evaluate the potential benefits in conditions of "standard" programming (basal AV delay the same for all patients: maximal frequency of 1/1 AV synchronisation uniformly limited to 120 bpm), a haemodynamic study was undertaken in 10 patients who had permanent DDD pacemakers implanted for advanced AV block. Measurements were taken during two standardized exercise stress tests (20 W/2 mn steps from an initial load of 20 W) performed in a random order, one with a fixed AV delay of 156 ms and the other with an "automatic AV delay" allowing linear reduction from a maximum value of 156 ms at rest to a minimum value of 84 ms at the maximum heart rate of 120 bpm. At the peak of exercise the "automatic AV delay" significantly affected 4 parameters: the paced ventricular rate (p = 0.008) and rate-pressure product (p = 0.005) which increased, pulmonary capillary pressure (p = 0.03) and cycle-to-cycle variability of systolic and diastolic blood pressures (p = 0.02 < p < 0.0001) which decreased. There was a tendency (NS) to slowing of the spontaneous atrial rate and to increase in cardiac output. This increase was significant in some patients and seemed to be due to a good relationship between the individual optimal value of the value basal AV delay measured by Doppler echocardiography and the value programmed in this study (156 ms).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

CT-MRI automatic surface-based registration schemes combining global and local optimization techniques.

Medical image registration is commonly required in order to combine the complementary information provided by different medical imaging modalities. In this paper, a new automatic registration scheme is proposed to register 3-D CT-MR head images and is currently tested on a clinical environment. The proposed scheme, after the preprocessing and the outer surface extraction of the data, is based on the use the rigid transformation method, in conjunction with a combination of global and local optimization techniques. Analytically, the paper exploits the optimization efficiency of three widely used optimization techniques, in obtaining the parameters of the rigid transformation model: the Downhill Simplex Method, the Genetic Algorithms and the Simulated Annealing. These optimization techniques are further combined by the sequential application of the Powell optimization method in order to refine the registration and increase its accuracy. A comparative study involving these optimization techniques in conjunction with the rigid transformation, and two other methods, the ICP and the manual methods, is also presented, for a sufficient number of clinical CT-MR brain images. Finally, quantitative and qualitative results are also presented to validate the performance of these automatic surface-based registration schemes, in terms of consistency and accuracy. Throughout of this study, the automatic registration scheme comprising of the rigid transformation in conjunction with the Simulated Annealing method sequentially combined with the Powell method has been performed superior regarding all the other compared registration schemes.

[Clinical value of indirect automatic blood pressure determination in patients with atrial fibrillation].

The value of indirect blood pressure in patients with atrial fibrillation was studied. Three methods were compared; single measurement, mean of three measurements and mean value of automatic measurement during 2-hours and whole day. The study comprised 13 patients; 7 men and 6 women aged 52-77 (mean 62.8 congruent to 6.6) hospitalized for cardiac diseases. The measurement were done using the mercury sphygmomanometer and auscultatory Korotkoff technique and automatic blood pressure monitoring (Acutracker--Medilog Oxford). The investigations showed that systolic and diastolic blood pressure during 24-hours monitoring were lower than single or repeated three measurements. The highest correlation coefficient to 24-hours recording was found for the mean value of 2-hours recording. It seems that blood pressure measurement in patients with atrial fibrillation (3-times in few minutes intervals) should be verified by using prolonged automatic recording.

Mahaim automatic accelerated rhythm: a marker of successful radiofrequency ablation.

BACKGROUND: Mahaim pathways are characterized by the presence of an accessory pathway potential-the 'M' potential, at the tricuspid annulus. M potential is a very useful guide during radiofrequency ablation of Mahaim pathway. During ablation, an accelerated rhythm with ORS morphology, identical to fully pre-excited QRS complex is observed, and has been labeled as Mahaim automatic rhythm. We analyzed this rhythm during radiofrequency ablation of these pathways. METHODS AND RESULTS: Eighteen patients with Mahaim accessory pathways were taken up for electrophysiology study and radiofrequency ablation. Tricuspid annulus was mapped for 'M' potentials and targeted for ablation. Duration of ablation and number of ablation attempts were guided by Mahaim automatic rhythm during ablation. Mahaim tachycardia was inducible in all. 'M' potentials were recorded in 15/18 patients. Radiofrequency energy was delivered at the site where Mahaim accelerated rhythm was noticed and was continued till abolition of the rhythm. This resulted in long-term success. In 3 patients, M potentials were not recordable, and in them other methods including 3-dimensional electroanatomical mapping was also not successful. CONCLUSIONS: 'M' potential-guided radiofrequency ablation is a useful technique. Presence of Mahaim automatic rhythm and its abolition during ablation is associated with long-term success of the procedure.

Automatic control strategy for biological nitrogen removal of low C/N wastewater in a sequencing batch reactor.

To establish an automatic control system of external carbon addition in biological nitrogen removal, a bench-scale sequencing batch reactor with real-time control strategy was designed in this study. An oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) profile was used for automatic control of external carbon addition. The mean removal efficiency of total organic carbon was over 98%. Complete denitrification in an anoxic phase and complete denitrification and nitrification in anoxic and oxic phases were accomplished, respectively, because the oxic and anoxic periods were also appropriately controlled with ORP and pH profiles, respectively. Mean removal efficiency of total nitrogen was over 95%. When concentration of influent wastewater was changed, volume of additional carbon was automatically changed with the influent fluctuation, and flexible hydraulic retention time was achieved in this system.

New procedure for fully automatic occlusal surface reconstruction by means of a biogeneric tooth model.

The goal of this study is to present a completely new procedure for automatic occlusal surface reconstruction and to test it in several inlay situations. The starting point is the mathematical analysis of a large number of occlusal surfaces from a tooth library. Learning algorithms used in pattern recognition and image processing were adapted for the special needs of dental morphology. A biogeneric tooth model resulted which can mathematically describe a certain type of tooth only with a few parameters. This model was tested on 40 simulated inlay situations and as an example on two clinical inlay situations. The results show that fully automatic reconstruction was possible except for four cases. In a majority of the cases, no further interactive improvements would have been necessary. Because of the general, theoretically well-founded approach, fully automatic reconstruction of the occlusal surface can also be extended in the future to full crowns or reduced crown substructures (copings).

[Automatic ECG analysis system based on TMS320F206].

An automatic ECG analysis system based on DSP is introduced in this paper. It can fulfill the functions of signal regulation, adaptive filtering, QRS waves positioning, and automatically recognize more than 10 kinds of arrhythmia and report alarm. TI DSP product--TMS320F206 is applied in this system to accomplish the adaptive filtering and automatic diagnosis of arrhythmia for the need of real time signal processing.

[Methods for automatic correction of the effect of various factors on the results of capnometry].

Factors affecting the results of carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration measurements and methods of their automatic compensation are considered for capnometers of two types: lateral flow (LF) and main flow (MF) capnometers. Advantages of the use of one-channel photometer in LF capnometer with automatic calibration were demonstrated. Compensation for temperature, pressure, and presence of concomitant gases and vapors in inhalation mixture is implemented automatically by introducing correction factors in CO2 concentration value. Calibration curves could be obtained empirically for specific capnometer model integrated into the gas analyzer. Carbon dioxide concentration values measured with LF and MF capnometers should be reduced to standard physical conditions STPD and BTPS conditions, respectively (body temperature and pressure, saturation with water vapors).

Automatic measurement of skin wheals provoked by skin prick tests.

Skin prick tests (SPT) represent the standard method for the diagnosis of type-1 allergies. The skin wheals provoked by the SPTs are considered positive above certain cut-off diameters, usually 3 mm. At present their size is mostly estimated by measuring the diameter with rulers. Since the shape of wheals usually is not circular, the measurement of diameters leads to imprecise results. Therefore, we developed an algorithm for precisely measuring the wheals' area in mm(2) automatically. The average deviation of the automatic measurement on a test set achieved with the developed algorithm was 6.9 %. Compared to the maximum standard deviation of 6.59 % when measuring the manually redrawn outlines, the automatic method works sufficiently well.

Automatization and training in visual search.

In several search tasks, the amount of practice on particular combinations of targets and distractors was equated in varied-mapping (VM) and consistent-mapping (CM) conditions. The results indicate the importance of distinguishing between memory and visual search tasks, and implicate a number of factors that play important roles in visual search and its learning. Visual search was studied in Experiment 1. VM and CM performance were almost equal, and slope reductions occurred during practice for both, suggesting the learning of efficient attentive search based on features, and no important role for automatic attention attraction. However, positive transfer effects occurred when previous CM targets were re-paired with previous CM distractors, even though these targets and distractors had not been trained together. Also, the introduction of a demanding simultaneous task produced advantages of CM over VM. These latter two results demonstrated the operation of automatic attention attraction. Visual search was further studied in Experiment 2, using novel characters for which feature overlap and similarity were controlled. The design and many of the findings paralleled Experiment 1. In addition, enormous search improvement was seen over 35 sessions of training, suggesting the operation of perceptual unitization for the novel characters. Experiment 3 showed a large, persistent advantage for CM over VM performance in memory search, even when practice on particular combinations of targets and distractors was equated in the two training conditions. A multifactor theory of automatization and attention is put forth to account for these findings and others in the literature.

[A wavelet-transform-based method for the automatic detection of late-type stars].

The LAMOST project, the world largest sky survey project, urgently needs an automatic late-type stars detection system. However, to our knowledge, no effective methods for automatic late-type stars detection have been reported in the literature up to now. The present study work is intended to explore possible ways to deal with this issue. Here, by "late-type stars" we mean those stars with strong molecule absorption bands, including oxygen-rich M, L and T type stars and carbon-rich C stars. Based on experimental results, the authors find that after a wavelet transform with 5 scales on the late-type stars spectra, their frequency spectrum of the transformed coefficient on the 5th scale consistently manifests a unimodal distribution, and the energy of frequency spectrum is largely concentrated on a small neighborhood centered around the unique peak. However, for the spectra of other celestial bodies, the corresponding frequency spectrum is of multimodal and the energy of frequency spectrum is dispersible. Based on such a finding, the authors presented a wavelet-transform-based automatic late-type stars detection method. The proposed method is shown by extensive experiments to be practical and of good robustness.

Comparison of office and serial automatic blood pressure readings in renovascular and essential hypertension.

Office blood pressures were compared with those obtained using a thirty minute recording with an automatic device (Dinamap) in thirty patients with essential hypertension and nineteen subjects with hypertension and renal artery stenosis. When matched for age and sex, no differences were found between both groups of patients with respect to their office or automatically recorded blood pressures. The difference between office and automatically assessed systolic blood pressures was similar in both groups. The difference in diastolic pressures was slightly larger in the group with renal artery stenosis. The number of patients showing a pressure drop greater than 10 mm Hg was comparable in the two groups. We conclude that blood pressure levels obtained in the office overestimate 'true' blood pressure not only in essential but also in renovascular hypertension.
