Pink salmon spawners introduced into the White Sea basin (the Umba River) were compared to the spawners from the basin of the Sea of Okhotsk (the Ola River) using restriction analysis of two fragments of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). One of the fragments included genes ND5/ND6, the other, the cytochrome b gene and the control region. It was found that mtDNA variation and diversity at the earlier examined nuclear allozyme genes significantly decreased in the odd broodline of pink salmon 8 years after the introduction. The haplotype diversity in the even broodline was considerably lower than in the odd broodline exhibiting virtually no change two generations after the introduction. Based on the results obtained, a possible role of these changes in adaptation of White Sea pink salmon from the odd broodline to the new environment is discussed.
Brown and rainbow trout, held in freshwater at 13 +/- 1 degrees, were injected, every 3 days, with iopanoic acid (IOP: 5 mg/100 g body wt), an inhibitor of deiodination of thyroxine (T4) to triiodothyronine (T3). One group of IOP-treated rainbow trout was immersed in T3 (20 micrograms/l water). In IOP trout, plasma T3 fell to very low levels by day 7, while changes in T4 levels were less marked. In IOP + T3 trout plasma T3 increased fivefold, plasma T4 being unchanged. No mortality occurred and plasma osmolarity (OP) was not altered by any treatment. After direct transfer to seawater (30/1000), IOP trout were unable to acclimate to salinity: all died within 2 or 3 days, while the survival at day 3 was 100% in control brown trout and 45 and 74% in control and IOP + T3 rainbow trout respectively. OP increased more in IOP and less in IOP + T3 than in controls. There was a significant inverse correlation between T3, but not T4, plasma level, at the time of transfer and the OP 1 day later. In conclusion, although T3 does not play a significant role in osmoregulation in freshwater, T3 and therefore the deiodination of T4 into T3, were required for the development of hypo-osmoregulatory capacity involved in acclimation of trout to seawater.
Axillary buds obtained from field grown plants of D. hamiltonii were used to initiate multiple shoots on Murashige and Skoog's medium (MS) supplemented with 2 mg L(-1) 6-benzyl aminopurine (BA) and 0.5 mg L(-1) indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). Profuse rooting was achieved when the actively growing shoots were cultured on MS medium supplemented with 1.0 mg l(-1) indole-3-butyric acid (IBA). Regenerated plants were grown successfully in the plains, in contrast to wild growth in high altitudes and rocky crevices of hilly regions. Roots of different sizes from one-year-old tissue culture raised field grown plants had the same profile of 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzaldehyde as that of wild plants. A maximum of 0.14% and 0.12% 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzaldehyde was produced in roots of one year old tissue culture derived plants and greenhouse grown plants respectively.

The introduction of Far Eastern mullet (pilengas) in the Azov Sea in the 1970s-1980s has resulted in the formation of a self-reproducing commercial population. We have carried out a comparative population-genetic analysis of the mullet from the native (Primorye, the Sea of Japan basin) and the new (The Azov Sea basin) ranges. Genetic characteristics of three Primorye and three Azov local samples were studied using electrophoretic analysis of 15 enzymes encoded by 21 gene loci. In the Azov mullet, the initial heterozygosity characteristic of the donor population was preserved while the genotype and the allele compositions changed; the changes included a 1.9-fold reduction in the percentage of polymorphic loci and 1.5-fold reduction in the mean number of alleles per locus. The genetic differences between the Azov and the Primorye sample groups were highly significant. In the native range, no genetic differentiation among the mullet samples from different areas was found (Gst = 0.42%), whereas in the Azov Sea basin, the samples from spatially isolated populations (ecological groups) exhibited genetic differences (Gst = 1.38). The genetic divergence of the subpopulations and the excess of heterozygotes at some loci in the Azov mullet suggest selection processes that formed genetically divergent groups associated with the areas of different salinity in the new range. The salinity level is assumed to be the most probable factor of local differentiating selection during fast adaptation and naturalization of the introduced mullet.
The effects of return migration on emotional well-being were studied in those school-aged children and adolescents who had returned to northern Finland from Sweden during 1984 and 1985. Each of the 320 returning children and adolescents was assigned a control from the same class at school, matched for age and sex, who had not emigrated. According to a parent questionnaire, the returning boys were irritable more often than the control boys, and they also scored higher on the self-report scale "Children's Depression Inventory." In the teachers' evaluations (Rutter B2 Scale), the returning boys had psychiatric disorders more often than their controls. For both returning boys and girls, overall scholastic achievement was poorer than in the controls, but performance in foreign languages (mainly English) was better. If the father was absent from the family, this was reflected in the scholastic achievement and emotional well-being of both the returnees and the control subjects. How well the children coped with their return to Finland was also affected by what the language of instruction had been in Sweden, whether there had been a language change upon returning to Finland and how much mental preparation there had been for moving.
