Laband syndrome. Report of two cases, review of the literature, and identification of additional manifestations.

Twenty-six persons with Laband syndrome have been reported in the literature to date. We report two further unrelated cases and suggest that a skeletal anterior open bite and symmetric soft tissue swelling of the vault of the palate be added to the variable features associated with the syndrome. There is clear evidence in the literature of autosomal dominant inheritance but our analysis indicates that in some cases recessive transmission is likely.

Dental team management for a patient with cleidocranial dysostosis.

Cleidocranial dysostosis is a rare autosomal condition that affects ossification. The dental abnormalities associated with it present a remarkable challenge in orthodontic treatment planning. Early diagnosis is extremely important to give the patient the best treatment options. Patients with cleidocranial dysostosis require a team approach with good communication and cooperation from the patient. Timing of the intervention is critical, and many surgeries might be required. The patient in this report was treated with a team effort that involved several dental specialties to achieve an optimal result.

Simple X-ray film holder for lateral view of the anterior jaws using dental X-ray apparatus.

A new X-ray apparatus, the occlusal X-ray film holder, was devised so that the lateral view of the jaw could be studied. This apparatus could easily be adjusted to a dental X-ray cone. In 21 cases of impacted teeth, cysts or foreign body in the maxilla and mandible and 6 cases that necessitated examination before or after implantation, the efficacy of this apparatus was confirmed. Its advantages are: it is applicable to dental X-ray equipment; it is cheap; there is no need for image intensifying to get a clear image; and follow-up examination is possible. We believe that this film holder would be useful for the diagnosis of lesions in the anterior maxilla and mandible as well as in the general dental clinic.

Combined surgical and orthodontic management of the oral abnormalities in children with cleidocranial dysplasia.

Children with cleidocranial dysplasia have dental abnormalities which combine to prevent normal tooth eruption, and which if untreated may result in abnormal facial and jaw growth. A technique combining orthodontics and oral surgery has resulted in the establishment of excellent occlusion and facial appearance in these patients. Recent advances in direct enamel bonding techniques for orthondontic attachments have permitted a conservative surgical approach with minimal bone removal during surgery to expose unerupted teeth prior to orthodontic treatment.
