Effect of calcium propionate on performance of laying hens.

Laying hens kept in individual cages were fed a practical diet supplemented with 0, 0.1, 0.2., 0.4, or 0.8% calcium propionate for a six-week period. Rate of egg production, average egg weight, feed consumption, and body weight change during the experiment were not significantly affected by and dietary treatments. Liver weight, moisture content and fat content were also no significantly affected by dietary treatments. The results show that the performance of normal hens is not changed by calcium propionate supplementation.

Effect of dietary propionic and lactic acids on feed intake by chicks.

Two organic acids were evaluated for their potential to regulate feed intake of chicks by dietary means. When propionic acid was included in the feed up to levels of 100 g/kg, from 0 to 28 days, voluntary feed intake of chicks was decreased with increasing dietary levels of acid. Propionic acid had a greater effect per unit weight when included in drinking water as compared with inclusion in feed. Lactic acid, up to 30 g/kg, did not significantly reduce feed intake.

Effectiveness of acidic calcium sulfate with propionic and lactic acid and lactates as postprocessing dipping solutions to control Listeria monocytogenes on frankfurters with or without potassium lactate and stored vacuum packaged at 4.5 degrees C.

The safety of ready-to-eat meat products such as frankfurters can be enhanced by treating with approved antimicrobial substances to control the growth of Listeria monocytogenes. We evaluated the effectiveness of acidic calcium sulfate with propionic and lactic acid, potassium lactate, or lactic acid postprocessing dipping solutions to control L. monocytogenes inoculated (ca. 10(8) CFU/ml) onto the surface of frankfurters with or without potassium lactate and stored in vacuum packages at 4.5 degrees C for up to 12 weeks. Two frankfurter formulations were manufactured without (control) or with potassium lactate (KL, 3.3% of a 60% [wt/wt] commercially available syrup). After cooking, chilling, and peeling, each batch was divided into inoculated (four strains of L. monocytogenes mixture) and noninoculated groups. Each group was treated with four different dips: (i) control (saline solution), (ii) acidic calcium sulfate with propionic and lactic acid (ACS, 1:2 water), (iii) KL, or (iv) lactic acid (LA, 3.4% of a 88% [wt/wt] commercially available syrup) for 30 s. Noninoculated frankfurters were periodically analyzed for pH, water activity, residual nitrite, and aerobic plate counts (APCs), and L. monocytogenes counts (modified Oxford medium) were determined on inoculated samples. Surface APC counts remained at or near the lower limit of detection (<2 log CFU per frank) on franks with or without KL and treated with ACS or LA throughout 12 weeks at 4.5 degrees C. L. monoctogenes counts remained at the minimum level of detection on all franks treated with the ACS dip, which indicated a residual bactericidal effect when L. monocytogenes populations were monitored over 12 weeks. L. monocytogenes numbers were also reduced, but not to the same degree in franks made without or with KL and treated with LA. These results revealed the effectiveness of ACS (bactericidal effect) or LA (bacteriostatic effect) as postprocessing dipping solutions to inhibit or control the growth of L. monocytogenes on vacuum-packaged frankfurters stored at 4.5 degrees C for up to 12 weeks.

[Propionic acidemia and sodium dipropylacetate].

After administering sodium dipropylacetate to normal rats and biotin-deficient rats, we observed a slight hyperglycinemia, significant constant hyperglycinuria, but no accumulation of propionic acid in the blood or significant urinary elimination. Hepatic propionyl-CoA carboxylase activity, in vivo and in vitro, did not change, neither did sodium dipropylacetate inhibit propionyl-CoA carboxylase nor induce propionic acidemia resulting from a deficiency in this enzyme.

[Toxinogenic moulds in silage. VI - Effect of propionic and formic acids on the production of patulin and of byssochlamic acid by Byssochlamys nivea Westling (author's transl)].

A strain of Byssochlamys nivea is cultivated for 5 months at 26 degrees C on kernels of wet corn previously treated with three doses of formic acid (1, 5, 3, 6 p.1000) and three doses of propionic acid (0.5, 1, 2 p. 100). As related to the control lot, the addition of these acid results, in the first two doses, in a decrease and slowing-down of the growth of the mould and the production of its two mycotoxins (patulin and byssochlamic acid). In the presence of 0.6 p. 1000 of formic acid, and especially with 2 p. 100 of propionic acid, Byssochlamys does not develop during the trial period. This inhibition may be annulled when the mould is put on a medium (Czapek) containing no acid.

Influence of propionic acid on growth and aflatoxin production by Aspergillus flavus in liquid submerged and solid substrate conditions.

The present experiments demonstrate that sublethal concentrations of propionic acid stimulated aflatoxin production considerably in submerged shaken culture and solid substrate culture of Aspergillus flavus. In liquid conditions aflatoxin formation was significantly influenced by the time of addition of propionic acid. The spores initially swelled into large spherical cells, and the resultant hyphae developed into a swollen, stunted, and excessively branched mycelium.

[Effect of various 2-methyl-(4'-chlorobenzoyl)-4-phenoxy)-2 propionic acid (LF 153) analogs on the respiratory activity of rat liver mitochondria].

Seven analogs of methyl-2 [chloro-4' benzoyl)-4 phenoxy]-2 propionic acid, (LF 153) have been tested for their effects on respiration and phosphorylation of rat liver mitochondria suspensions. They differ from one another by the sort of binding between both aromatic cycle as well as by the nature and position of the halogenated substitutions and alpha methylation in the propionic chain. All the compounds which have been tested acted as inhibitors of the electron transport chain and uncouplers of phosphorylations.

[Effect of testosterone propionate on the distribution pattern of calcitonin gene-related peptide in different motoneuron pools].

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of testosterone propionate (TP) on the distribution pattern of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) in two types of motoneuron (Mn) pools in rats. METHOD: The double labeling of cholera toxin B subunit coupled with colloidal gold (CB-Au) retrograde identification combining with immunocytochemistry was mainly used to reveal the distribution pattern of CGRP-like immunoreactivity (CGRP-LI) and its changes in the motoneuron pools labeled by CB-Au. RESULT: TP injected intramuscularly 28 days later significantly decreased CGRP expression in Mn pool innervating extensor digitorum longus (EDL, fast-twitch), comparing with corresponding control and castration group respectively (P < 0.001), while no significant effect on Mn pools innervating soleus (SOL, slow-twitch, P > 0.05) was observed. CONCLUSION: EDL-Mn pool is more sensitive to testosterone propionate than SOL-Mn pool in regulating CGRP expression.

[Aminomethyl derivatives of (benzisothiazolin-3-one-2-yl)acetic acid amides and 2-(1,2-benzisothiazoline-3-one-2-yl)propionic acid amides].

In the search for pharmacological active new derivatives of 1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-on amides of (3-oxo-1,2-benzisothiazolin-2-yl)acetic acid and 3-(3-oxo-1,2-benzisothiazolin-2-yl)propionic acid were obtained. In the reaction of these amides with formaldehyde and various second aryl amines the title compounds are formed. Morpholinmethylamide of (3-oxo-1,2-benzisothiazolin-2-yl)acetic acid showed activity against Trichomonas vaginalis. In the reaction of ethyl esters of (3-oxo-1,2-benzisothiazolin-2-yl) acetic- and -propionic acids with hydrazine hydrate products of ring-opening of isothiazole-2,2'-dithio-bis [N- (ethoxycarbonylmethyl)benzamide] and 2,2'-dithio-bis[N-(ethoxycarbonylethyl)benzamide are formed.

Propionic acidemia--biochemical studies.

The first documented case of propionic acidemia in Israel is described. Diagnosis was based on three independent methods: analysis of urinary organic acids by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, assay of propionyl CoA carboxylase activity and oxidation of 1-14C-propionate by cultured skin fibroblasts. The use of more than one method for confirmation of the diagnosis is considered to be of importance in providing an additional margin of safety in cases where genetic counseling and prenatal diagnosis in future pregnancies are indicated.

Studies on the derivatives of aziridine. II. Synthesis and immunopharmacological analysis of substituted amides and anilides of alpha-aziridinyl-beta-/p-chlorobenzoyl/-propionic acid.

Several new amides and anilides of alpha-aziridinyl-beta-/p-chlorobenzoyl/-propionic acid were synthetized. The beta-/p-chlorobenzoyl/-acrylic acid 2 was used as the substrate. This compound was converted by reaction with appropriate amine into amides and anilides of beta-/p-chlorobenzoyl/-acrylic acid (3-10). These compounds react with ethylenoimine giving appropriate amides and anilides of alpha-aziridinyl-beta-/p-chlorobenzoyl/-propionic acid (11-18). When pharmacologically analyzed, they appeared to possess marked immunotropic activity. The derivatives in question modulated both humoral as well as cellular immune response, the effect being related to the type of substitutent in the amide group.

Studies on the derivatives of aziridine. I. synthesis and immunopharmacological analysis of amides of alpha-aziridinyl- beta-/p-chlorobenzoyl/-propionic acid.

Several new aziridinyl derivatives of beta-/p-chlorobenzoyl/propionic acid were synthesized (3, 5, 7, 14-18). The gamma-/p-chlorophenyl/-dihydrofuran-2-one 2 and beta-/p-chlorobenzoyl/acrylic acid 4 were used as the substrates. Compound 2 reacts with ethylenimine yielding aziridinylamide of beta-/p-chlorobenzoyl/-propionic acid 3. The sodium salt of acid 4 and methyl ester 6 were converted by reactions with ethylenimine into appropriate alpha-aziridinyl derivatives 5 and 7. The acid 4 in the reaction with phosphorus pentachloride gives the acid chloride 8 which is transformed under the influence of appropriate amines into corresponding amides 9-13. These amides react with ethylenimine giving the appropriate alpha-aziridinyl derivatives of beta-/p-chlorobenzoyl/-propionic acid 14-18. Pharmacological analysis revealed that the compounds studied possessed immunotropic activity; they modulate both humoral as well as cellular immune response. Their effect has been shown to be related to chemical structure and to substituents of the carboxyl group in particular.

Propionate-3-nitronate oxidase from Penicillium atrovenetum is a flavoprotein which initiates the autoxidation of its substrate by O2.

On the fifth day following inoculation into an unstirred liquid surface culture, Penicillium atrovenetum abruptly, and reproducibly, secretes large quantities (2 g/liter) of the toxic antibiotic 3-nitropropionate into the medium. Concomitantly and with the same time course, crude extracts of the fungus acquire the ability to catalyze the oxidation of 3-nitropropionate by O2. We purified this activity some 300-fold to homogeneity and find it to be a soluble, dimeric (Mr = 73,000) flavoprotein oxidase having FMN as prosthetic group with lambda max = 363 and 433 nm. The preferred substrates are propionate-3-nitronate (3-NP-2) and O2 while the reaction products are malonate semialdehyde, NO2-, NO3-, O2-., and H2O2. Of 13 nitronates tested only butyrate-4-nitronate is more than 2% as reactive as 3-NP-2. 3-NP-2 (0.1 mM) rapidly reduces E-FMN anaerobically to E-FMNH., the flavin semiquinone (t1/2 less than 5 s), but reduces E-FMNH. to the fully reduced enzyme (E-FMNH2) very slowly (t1/2 approximately 900 s). The steady state turnover number with 0.1 mM 3-NP-2 and infinite O2 is 350 s-1. Therefore, the enzyme must oscillate almost exclusively between E-FMN and E-FMNH. during aerobic turnover. (Formula: see text). The complicated and non-integral reaction stoichiometry provides further support for this free radical mechanism. Each mole of 3-NP-. generated enzymatically initiates the nonenzymatic autoxidation of at least 2.2 mol of 3-NP-2 through a free radical chain reaction. An appropriate name for the newly characterized enzyme is propionate-3-nitronate oxidase.

The control of bacterial contamination in carcass meal with propionic acid.

The effect of the addition of 2, 3, 5, 7 and 10% respectively of propionic acid on known numbers of bacteria added to or contained in carcass meal was examined. Escherichia coli was totally inhibited by 2% propionic acid, while 5% of the acid both inhibited Salmonella typhimurium and brought about a 74,7% reduction in the total aerobic bacterial count.

[Gas chromatographic studies on propionic acid, butyric acid and valeric acid in culture fluid of Trichomonas vaginalis].

Trichomonas vaginalis was inoculated into Cysteine-Peptone-Liver infusion-Maltose medium (CPLM medium), and serial changes in short-chain fatty acids in the culture fluid were studied by gas chromatography. A significant increase in the amount of propionic acid and iso-valeric acid was found in the culture fluids obtained at 72 or 120 hours after inoculation of Trichomonas vaginalis. These short-chain fatty acids are considered to be produced in vitro during the growth of Trichomonas vaginalis in the CPLM medium, presumably by the catabolism of amino acids. Recent in vitro studies on viral oncology have shown that propionic acid or iso-valeric acid had a promoter-like activity and/or promoter-enhancing effect. Accordingly, the present findings suggest that Trichomonas vaginalis is, at least in part, responsible for the promotion of cervical cancer or vaginal cancer.

[Direct evidence of the role of propionate in choline synthesis in rats].

Wistar rats were injected with 2-14C-propionate in a dose of 30 mu Ci/100 g bw, 2 h after food intake. Two hours after isotope injection the rats were decapitated to determine specific radioactivity (SR) in liver and brain lipids, in liver phosphatidylcholine (PC) and its structural components. The label was incorporated in liver lipids in a far greater amount. In liver PC, SR appeared the highest in glycerin and less higher in the fraction of higher fatty acids. The least amount of the label from 2-14C-propionate was incorporated in choline. The fact of the label incorporation in choline was recorded for the first time.

[Propionate metabolism of Ectothiorhodospira shaposhnikovii during growth in the dark].

Assimilation of propionate by Ectothiorhodospira shaposhnikovii growing under the aerobic conditions in the dark, like in the light involves carboxylation of propionyl-CoA with the participation of biotin-dependent carboxylase. The succinate being formed is transformed in the reactions of the citric acid cycle and the glyoxylate shunt. This is corroborated by the determination of the enzyme activity manifested by cell extracts, by the composition and kinetics of labeled products, as well as by the action of the inhibitors of the citric acid cycle (fluoroacetate, malonate) and avidin on the assimilation of 14C-propionate and 14CO2 by the cells.

Spongy degeneration of the nervous system associated with propionic acidemia.

The pathologic changes in the brain of a five and a half month old male child who died of propionic acidemia are presented. Although previous pathologic reports of this disorder describe either no involvement of the central nervous system or focal myelin sheath vacuolization, the present case exhibited different pathology, namely, spongy degeneration of the white matter of Van Bogaert and Bertrand's type. Thus this case illustrates that the pathologic changes in the brain in propionic acidemia are variable. In addition, the cerebellum in this patient showed marked diffuse atrophy and early loss of the external granular layer, two changes that have not been emphasized by previous authors.
