[Effect of the media salinity on destruction of petroleum oils by nocardioform bacteria].

Oil degradation by cultures of Rhodococcus erythropolis and Dietzia maris was found to depend on the NaCl concentration in the medium. Optimal utilization of turbine oil by R. erythropolis and D. maris was observed at 0.5 and 2 to 5% NaCl concentration, respectively. Mineral oil and a mixture of paraffins (C14-C18) were utilized within a broader range of the medium salinity. As shown by fluorescent microscopy, D. maris colonies formed on the oil drop surface, whereas R. erythropolis cells penetrated the drops. The strains studied may populate various ecological niches in oil-containing ecosystems. They are promising for the development of microbial preparations for cleaning the environment from oil pollution.

[Development of biosensors for phenol determination from bacteria found in petroleum fields of West Siberia].

Nine Gram-negative bacterial strains, selected from 300 strains isolated from soils of the West Siberian petroliferous basin and growing on oil and oil products, consume phenol as a single carbon and energy source. The strains were used for the development of a sensor bioreceptor. The most active 32-I strain was shown to bear a plasmid responsible for phenol degradation. The plasmid-free derivative of this strain, 32-I-1, did not grow on phenol. The possibility of creating a model biosensor for phenol based on the plasmid-containing 32-I strain is considered. The detection limit for phenol was 5 microM. The optimum conditions for the sensor operation are: pH 7.4, 35 degrees C, and operation time 30 h.

[Effects of the factor of season on the the physiological status of petroleum industry workers in the Polar region].

There were three medical examinations (in March, June and October) of oilers on shift days 5-6 in a field medical post in the Polar region. The survey protocol included analysis of morning (before breakfast) biochemical and cell indices, physiological examination, testing reactions to standard stimuli (color, tone), psychological testing, assessment of factual nutrition, analysis of the cardiorespiratory function at rest and during physical tests. It was stated that recovery of physical performance varied with the seasons. In March, the shift workers were significantly less reactive to the color stimulus. At low ambient temperature (-38 degrees C) blood content of alpha 1- and alpha 2-globulins went up, and there were atypical proteins and considerable amounts of total cholesterol, pre-beta-lipoproteins and alpha-lipoproteins in blood.

[Carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in petroleum products: possible prevention of mineral oil cancer].

A real epidemy of cutaneous cancer has appeared from 1954 in a french area specialized in the metal machining industry (valley of the Arve, Haute-Saoie). Two investigations have been carried out: - one, of clinical and epidemiological nature over a period of 15 years, has recorded 133 casesof spinocellular epitheliams often located in the scrotum and has allowed to estimate the hazard for the population of this region at 25 per 100 000 (that is to say 36 times more than for the general population). - the other, of chemical nature, has revealed on one hand that the new cutting oils, such as delivered to the utilizers, rather frequently contain benzo [a] pyrene (concentration : 0,5 to 150 ug/l), and on the other hand that the used oils are inclined to grow richer in carcinogenic hydrocarbons. The prevention must be directed towards a supplementary effort in the refining of industrial oils and proposals for toxicological threshold value, which would allow to supply machine shops with oils no longer presenting a carcinogenic hazards.

[Methodologies as applied to the organization of socio-industrial monitoring in regions with developed petroleum chemical industry and oil refineries].

The authors tackle a problem of social and hygienic monitoring organization in territories with developed oil chemistry and oil processing industries. Analysis of longstanding observations over environmental objects and public health state serves to justify priority criteria to be included into social and hygienic monitoring system.

[Study of petroleum-degrading activity of microflora from the shoreline region of the Caspian Sea].

Soil samples from the shore of Baku Bay (Caspian Sea), were studied. The content of oil products in the samples amounted to 2.7-8.0 wt%. The total counts of microorganisms were 1.8 x 10(6) cells per g soil, which is by two orders of magnitude lower compared to soils free from oil pollution. In addition, the diversity of microflora is considerably narrower. The samples were used to isolate pure cultures of microbial degraders capable of assimilating 24 to 32% of the oil introduced into liquid nutrient medium in six days. It was demonstrated that the fraction composition of residual oil changed and both light and heavy oil fractions were degraded.

[Acid and osmotic erythrocyte resistance in workers at a petroleum factory].

Data on the impact exerted by industrial products, i.e. pyromellitic dianhydride, on the acidic and osmotic resistance of erythrocytes in workers are described. The influence of hazardous factors of the oil-and-chemical production was found to result in a changing erythrocytes' resistance (of workers) to the osmotic and acidic hemolytics with regard for a labor record and duration of contact with toxicants. The shifts in acidic and osmotic resistance can serve as an early marker of changes in the functional erythron's status in workers occupied under hazardous industrial factors.

[The hygienic assessment of the working conditions and health status of workers on the petroleum tank farms of Bashkiria].

Work conditions and the health status in workers of Bashkirian oil enterprises are characterized. Exposure to oil products composed of alkanes and aromatics, petrol and tetraethyl lead was proved to be the major hazard for workers of all the occupations. Complex of occupational and industrial hazards of Bashkirian oil enterprises harms the health status of workers, which induces the high prevalence of chronic diseases.
