Family planning information sources and media exposure among Zimbabwean men.

This report describes, for a sample of Zimbabwean men, sources of family planning information, media exposure, media preferences, and whether they would like to learn more about family planning methods. The data are from the 1988 Zimbabwe Male Fertility Survey, a representative sample of 711 currently married men aged 20 and over. The analysis is restricted to the 512 men whose wives were aged 49 and under at the time of the survey. The radio and personal communications, followed by posters and newspapers, are the most frequently reported sources of family planning information. The radio is considered to be the best medium for learning about family planning, followed by community-based distributors. Nearly 85 percent of respondents indicated that they would like to learn more about family planning. Information from men should be included in information, education, and communication programs in order to enhance male involvement in the family planning process.

Hospital infection control in Thailand.

Nosocomial infection is a relatively new subject in Thailand. A group of interested medical personnel has been identified which has begun to work together. The nationwide prevalence study showed that nosocomial infection is a serious health problem that requires urgent intervention. Attempts have been made to develop proper control programmes. The main obstacles in practice are the lack of both support from administrators and cooperation from medical colleagues. These obstacles can be overcome in future by meetings, distribution of information, and education. Success in epidemic control and expenditure reduction should provide the evidence to convince administrators of the necessity of control of nosocomial infection.

Analysis of primate head irradiation with 55-MeV protons.

The distribution of the dose to the head of a primate phantom due to 55-MeV proton irradiation was calculated using a clinical radiotherapy treatment planning system, with anatomic definition through computerized tomography scans. Dose profiles, isodose distributions, and differential and integral dose-volume histograms are used to describe the probable proton dose to the brain of rhesus monkeys, irradiated over two decades ago, in which brain tumors have now developed. The dose analysis shows that 59% of the brain received a dose in excess of the reference surface dose, and that portions of the brain received doses greater than 300% of the reference surface dose. The regions of high dose are illustrated in isodose distributions. This information may be useful in evaluating potential tumor induction following radiation exposure.

Proper insertion of a complex membrane protein in the absence of its amino-terminal export signal.

The MalF protein spans the Escherichia coli cytoplasmic membrane eight times. Deletion of the first transmembrane stretch of MalF, which acts as an export signal, results in a truncated protein that still exhibits high levels of maltose transport activity. These and additional results indicate that the orientation of a membrane protein is not determined by the amino-terminal export signal, topological information is distributed throughout the MalF protein, and insertion of a protein into the cytoplasmic membrane can occur nonsequentially.

DNA typing and genetic mapping with trimeric and tetrameric tandem repeats.

Tandemly reiterated sequences represent a rich source of highly polymorphic markers for genetic linkage, mapping, and personal identification. Human trimeric and tetrameric short tandem repeats (STRs) were studied for informativeness, frequency, distribution, and suitability for DNA typing and genetic mapping. The STRs were highly polymorphic and inherited stably. A STR-based multiplex PCR for personal identification is described. It features fluorescent detection of amplified products on sequencing gels, specific allele identification, simultaneous detection of independent loci, and internal size standards. Variation in allele frequencies were explored for four U.S. populations. The three STR loci (chromosomes 4, 11, and X) used in the fluorescent multiplex PCR have a combined average individualization potential of 1/500 individuals. STR loci appear common, being found every 300-500 kb on the X chromosome. The combined frequency of polymorphic trimeric and tetrameric STRs could be as high as 1 locus/20 kb. The markers should be useful for genetic mapping, as they are sequence based, and can be multiplexed with the PCR. A method enabling rapid localization of STRs and determination of their flanking DNA sequences was developed, thus simplifying the identification of polymorphic STR loci. The ease by which STRs may be identified, as well as their genetic and physical mapping utility, give them the properties of useful sequence tagged sites (STSs) for the human genome initiative.

Variation in Lp(a) levels and apo(a) isoform frequencies in five baboon subspecies.

Elevated levels of lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)] are positively correlated with risk of cardiovascular disease and are thought to be a function of allelic variation in apo(a), the unique protein component of Lp(a). In this article we examine subspecies variation in Lp(a) levels and apo(a) isoforms in the baboon. Breeding populations of the five subspecies (Papio hamadryas hamadryas, P.h. cynocephalus, P.h. ursinus, P.h. papio, and P.h. anubis) of common long-tailed baboons are maintained at the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research. Serum samples were obtained from at least 20 unrelated animals of each subspecies. Twelve different size isoforms (including the null) of apo(a) were identified across the five subspecies. These isoforms act as alleles; a maximum likelihood method was used to obtain the allele frequencies. Significant differences in apo(a) isoform frequencies were found between subspecies (chi 2(44) = 163.10, p less than 0.0001). Quantitative levels of Lp(a) also differed among subspecies. We evaluated the correlation between genetic distances calculated using the quantitative Lp(a) levels and the apo(a) isoform data. Observed genetic relationships among the subspecies are consistent with the present-day geographic distribution and information from other marker protein systems. The findings indicate that the marker apo(a) may have great utility in both evolutionary and biomedical studies.

Integration of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay with conventional chromatographic procedures for quantitation of aflatoxin in individual cotton bolls, seeds, and seed sections.

Integration of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) with conventional chromatographic methods proved the versatility of ELISA as a research tool and allowed for rapid assessment of aflaxtoxin in individual cottonseeds, parts of cottonseed, and composite samples of seeds taken from individual cotton bolls. Aqueous acetone was substituted for methanol in the extraction procedure prescribed by ELISA. The substitution allowed the use of a common extract for all analytical methods. An aliquot of the extract was used to screen samples by ELISA. Negative samples were identified, and toxin levels between 1 and 70 ng/g were quantitated by ELISA. Samples with toxin levels beyond the upper limit of detection by ELISA were then subjected to more time-consuming conventional cleanup prior to quantitation by liquid chromatography (LC) or thin-layer chromatography (TLC). Toxin levels detected by LC or TLC ranged from 100 to 845,000 ng/g sample. The screen by ELISA detected large numbers of toxin-negative cotton bolls or individual seeds in minimum analysis time. The combination of techniques verified the presence of seed with no toxin adjacent to toxin-containing seed in the same lock. Toxin-negative portions of individual seed with high toxin in another portion were identified for the first time. Integration of techniques provided needed information on distribution patterns of aflatoxin in cotton so that preventive measures can be developed.

Health in strip cartoons.

Strip cartoons are among the most vivid means of communication at our disposal, and they are particularly popular with the young. Medical matters have featured in many stories, though usually in a peripheral role. Could more be done to use this powerful medium, or would deliberate exploitation destroy it?

AIDS prevention program for Puerto Rican women.

Historically women are considered the family's primary care provider and biologically, they are the link in the transmission of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus. Because of this dual role, they need programs that are culturally sensitive and effective. Many Latinas do not perceive themselves to be at risk despite the educational resources available to them. This article examines cultural factors that influence risk perception and behavioral changes in response to educational intervention. Interviews and literature review were used in assessing availability, applicability and cultural sensitivity of AIDS prevention programs. Effective programs need to be culturally sensitive to gender role expectation and the role of motherhood for Latinas. Educators expressed the belief that women benefit most from programs that help them implement the behaviors that will help protect them. Programs must be cognizant of the cultures' demand for respect and modesty while providing factual information/instruction.

[Socio-hygienic characteristics of primiparae over 30 years of age].

A complex sociohygienic study of primaparous women aged 30 and over enables one to believe that along with leading biological risk factor, that is age, sociohygienic and medicodemographic factors also play an important role. This group of primaparous women requires special attention on the part of obstetricians and other specialists. One of the priorities are health-promoting activities before and during pregnancy and also the expansion of specialized medical care provided to them. It is suggested to develop a special prevention programme for this group of primaparas, distribute special information booklets, conduct interviews and group studies on the subject.

[Handicapped children and children at risk for handicaps in Bavarian integrated kindergartens--initial results of a survey].

The survey "integrative preschool education - an inquiry in Bavarian preschools/kindergartens" aimed to obtain a representative picture of the situation of handicapped children in regular preschool settings - as opposed to special institutions. In this paper we present information regarding distribution among different group-sizes as well as different defining/diagnosing systems. We also investigated the influence of certain ecological conditions such as size of place where the preschool is situated and distance between preschool and the nearest special institution. Furthermore we gained insight into the conditions which hinder and those which promote the admission of handicapped children.

[Assessment of an analysis of the connections of nutrition with risk factors for ischemic heart disease in a one-time epidemiologic study].

Nutrition of 908 males aged 20-54 years, living in Tallinn, was studied in simultaneous population investigation by the method of one-day questioning. It was found that subjects with excessive body mass (EBM) and coronary heart disease (CHD), who did not keep to a diet, reduced their ration calorific value, consumption of saturated fatty acids, sugar, and increased consumption of polyunsaturated fatty acids and food fibres. No relations were detected between nutrition and CHD risk factors in the majority of subjects during the simultaneous population investigation. It has been suggested that subjects with EBM and CHD changed their nutrition habits due to the distribution of information among the population on the important role of nutrition in the development of EBM and atherosclerosis.

[The prevention of beta-thalassemia in French-speaking Belgium. II. Proposal of a strategy].

Medico-social surveys and pilot experiments, conducted by the authors in Wallonia and Brussels at the request of the Ministry for the French-Speaking Community, have allowed the definition of a community-scale prevention programme. High-quality information, repeated at regular intervals and adapted to the different environments, is vital for effective voluntary screening. The contents of this information and distribution methods have been specified. Screening will take place on an occasional basis among people at risk who request it, or who accept it as an addition to other planned blood tests (curative or preventive consultations); microcytosis must be considered as a definite indication for further work up. Systematic screening is recommended in the framework of upper secondary education, through cooperation between volunteer teachers and the staff of school medical institutions; teaching methods and means have been reviewed.
