The skin may be considered as well as a target and an iniator of self immune reactions. Two to 5% of the epidermal cells are Langerhans cells (LC) which are the only cells to specifically take, process and present the antigens to lymphocytes in order to induce an immune response. Such an ability and location of these cells enhance their role in antigenic stimulations and immuno-allergic reactions. TNF alpha was showed to potentiate the effect of GM-CSF for the generation of LC from their CD34+ precursors. Originated from the bone marrow, the LC colonize the epithelia where they act as antigen presenting cells by taking, processing antigens, and migrating to lymph nodes where they sensitize T cells. In vitro incubation of LC mimics their phenotypic, morphologic and functional maturation (enhanced accessory function) while they are migrating in vivo to lymph nodes where they are called interdigitating cells. Animal models might clarify such an hypothesis. Mechanisms leading to the LC immigration or the emigration from epithelia in order to play their immune functions remain obscure. Although LC are purified with difficulty and no immortalized human cell lines exist, these cells are still an ideal APC dendritic cell model. They will certainly be considered, in the next future, as the pivotal role of vaccinal strategy.

In two cases of folie à trois, affecting two Soviet-Jewish families who emigrated to Israel, both elderly parents in both cases shared the paranoid delusional beliefs of an only child. Severe trauma in the past and social maladjustment in the present may be among the precipitating factors for the development of the shared paranoid disorder.

This study compares the subjective symptoms recorded by questionnaire, and the diagnoses applied, in 289 adult medical outpatients of six national origins, namely, Canada (Ontario), England, Germany, Hungary, Italy, and Scotland. No significant differences were observed in the number or type of symptoms presented among the national groups. In each group, women and patients with psychological diagnoses reported more symptoms. There were considerable differences in the incidence of somatic (organic) and psychological diagnoses between the groups, which did not reflect equivalent variations in the incidence of definite clinical entities. It is suggested that the symptom habits of the groups studied appeared similar, with the method of investigation used, but that difficulties in patient-physician communication may lead to significantly different diagnostic habits for the national groups involved.
The meaning of population pressure is discussed and, with the help of a formula, its five main components (people, rate of increase of people, food-producing acreage, protein nutrition and industrialization) are analyzed.Factors which have eased population pressure in the past are considered under the headings of political violence (war and genocide), natural disaster (famine and disease), and social action (increased local protein supply, emigration, industrialization and birth control).Birth control is the first prerequisite to an easing of population pressure; the effectiveness of the Japanese and the Indian programs is discussed. The crippling burden of preventable disease, shown to be a major obstacle to the development of sophisticated industries, presents a challenge to Western medical men who so far have done little to meet it.
"This paper seeks to assess the value of the overseas-born members of the labour force in ensuring a flexible labour supply in New Zealand since the beginning of the 1970s. Three main issues are considered: first, the role of the labour market in New Zealand's immigration policy; second, international migration trends and the labour market; and third, the evidence on migration and labour market segmentation in New Zealand." Data used are from official external migration statistics, quinquennial censuses, and recent research. The author notes that "in New Zealand immigration measures are currently being taken that emphasize that immigration continues to add to the flexibility of the labour market while uncontrolled emigration is a major cause of labour market instability." A 1991 serosurvey in a Ugandan trading town on the trans-African highway reported a 40 per cent HIV-1 prevalence in adults. Three years later in a repeat survey of the 531 adults resident in 1991, 279 (53%) were still present, 196 (37%) had left and 56 (11%) had died. There were 138 new residents and 46 children had become adults, making a total of 463 adults in 1994, 13 per cent less than 1991. Most immigrants (91%) came from the surrounding rural district whereas 38 per cent of emigrants went to an urban area. A significant inverse association between wealth and seropositivity was found for women but not men. Of the original residents 157 were known to be HIV-1 positive in 1991; 31 (20%) had died compared to 10 (4%) of the 232 known to be seronegative, representing an HIV-1 attributable mortality fraction of 60 per cent.
