[Establishment of Internet-based database of the Virtual Chinese Human dataset].

To establish an Internet-based database for the dataset of Virtual Chinese Human that is accessible to the interested researchers, modifications and compression of the original VCH-format dataset of Virtual Chinese Human were performed before it was uploaded to the server, and RAID0+1 storage technology was adopted with specific download accesses designed for different users. After dataset modification and compression, the data size was considerably reduced to allow convenient data storage and transfer. The RAID0+1 storage technology guarantees the security and high-speed download of data through different means established. Internet-based database provides important accesses for sharing the achievement in virtual human study between world-wide researchers, which has been imperative in the present situation of science development.

An adverse role for matrix metalloproteinase 12 after spinal cord injury in mice.

We investigated the role of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in acute spinal cord injury (SCI). Transcripts encoding 22 of the 23 known mammalian MMPs were measured in the mouse spinal cord at various time points after injury. Although there were significant changes in the expression levels of multiple MMPs, MMP-12 was increased 189-fold over normal levels, the highest of all MMPs examined. To evaluate the role of MMP-12 in SCI, spinal cord compression was performed in wild-type (WT) and MMP-12 null mice. Behavioral analyses were conducted for 4 weeks using the Basso-Beattie-Bresnahan (BBB) locomotor rating scale as well as the inclined plane test. The results show that MMP-12 null mice exhibited significantly improved functional recovery compared with WT controls. Twenty-eight days after injury, the BBB score in the MMP-12 group was 7, representing extensive movement of all three hindlimb joints, compared with 4 in the WT group, representing only slight movement of these joints. Furthermore, MMP-12 null mice showed recovery of hindlimb strength more rapidly than control mice, with significantly higher inclined plane scores on days 14 and 21 after SCI. Mechanistically, there was decreased permeability of the blood-spinal barrier and reduced microglial and macrophage density in MMP-12 null mice compared with WT controls. This is the first study to profile the expression patterns of a majority of the known MMPs after spinal cord compression. The data indicate that MMP-12 expression after spinal cord trauma is deleterious and contributes to the development of secondary injury in SCI.

Development of a biomedical imaging informatics system for diagnosis and treatment planning.

The medical imaging technologies have been used for detecting tumors through the years. Tumors that can be viewed in imaging are usually big enough to contain billion tumor cells. Some patients may be cured if detected earlier and the surgery is performed well. Those lead to molecular imaging and image-guided surgery research activities, which post new challenges on large scale imaging data management and 3-D visualization. The goal of this project is to develop 3-D imaging informatics system that can interactively navigate large scale of organ and molecular levels imaging data for early diagnosis and treatment planning.

[Radial basis function networks and IR spectrometry applied for identification of official rhubarb samples].

The Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIRS) and radial basis function neural network (RBF-NN) have been applied to develop classification models for identifying official and unofficial rhubarb samples. The original data were compressed from 775 variables to 49 variables by using wavelet transformation method. The compressed spectra with reduced variables maintain the characteristics of the IR spectra and speed up the network training process. The effects of network parameters including error goal and spread constant, were investigated. The rate of correct classification is up to 97.78% at optimized conditions. Results show that the combination of IRS and ANN can be used as fast and convenient tool for identification of Chinese herbal samples.

[Spectrum analysis of crop and weeds at seedling].

The infestation information on field weeds is the basis of variable spraying herbicides. It was found that the method using the spectral characteristics of plant is superior in real-time respect. The Fourier transform infrared spectrum technique was applied to measure the reflectance of wheat and weeds in the range from 700 to 1100 nm. The discrimination analysis was done using the SPSS software. Firstly, the source spectrum data were compressed and normalized. Secondly, the characteristic wavelengths were selected by using stepwise method. Thirdly, the discrimination model was set up to use the selected wavelengths as the variables for detecting wheat and weeds. It was shown by the result of discrimination analysis that the correct classification rate of wheat and weeds detection with the selected wavelength points achieved 97%. In addition, the selected wavelength points were marked in the "red edge" of reflectance within some range, and the rate of correct classification increased with the increase in the numbers of the selected wavelength points. According to the selected wavelength points, the proper filters were chosen to perform the multi-spectral images captured and processed with the machine vision system.

Contemporary, emerging, and ratified wireless security standards: an update for the networked dental office.

Wireless networking is not new to contemporary dental offices around the country. Wireless routers and network cards have made access to patient records within the office handy and, thereby, saving valuable chair side time and increasing productivity. As is the case with any rapidly developing technology, wireless technology also changes with the same rate. Unless, the users of the wireless networking understand the implications of these changes and keep themselves updated periodically, the office network will become obsolete very quickly. This update of the emerging security protocols and pertaining to ratified wireless 802.11 standards will be timely for the contemporary dentist whose office is wirelessly networked. This article brings the practicing dentist up-to-date on the newer versions and standards in wireless networking that are changing at a fast pace. The introduction of newer 802.11 standards like super G, Super AG, Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO), and pre-n are changing the pace of adaptation of this technology. Like any other rapidly transforming technology, information pertaining to wireless networking should be a priority for the contemporary dentist, an eventual end-user in order to be a well-informed and techno-savvy consumer.

[Clinical electroencephalographic characteristics of the phasic nature of the course of severe cerebrocranial injury].

In order to early recognize intracranial hematomas and contusions, differential diagnostic criteria for analysis of neurological symptomatology and EEG signs are considered from the standpoint of a phasic clinical progress of traumatic pathological conditions of the brain. The EEG syndromes of initial, pronounced and gross synchronization correlated with the clinical phases of subcompensation, mild and deep decompensation. The study demonstrates a contrary trend in the dynamics of the clinical and EEG data in compression and contusion of the brain.

A comparison of ultraviolet-curing and self-curing polymers in preventive, restorative and orthodontic dentistry.

Both self-cured and UV-cured resin-base dental materials are used in preventive, restorative, and orthodontic dentistry. Polymerization is initiated in both systems by free radicals. Self-curing materials generate free radicals by means of chemical compounds included in their formulation. UV-curing systems rely upon externally-supplied, long wavelength, ultraviolet radiation to produce free radicals within the material. Therefore, although the major chemical components of both systems are similar in many respects, each system has particular advantages and disadvantages over the other, which must be recognized by the practitioner. Substantial differences exist, for example, in the color stability of these two types of materials, because of the fact that the UV-cured system cannot include UV absorbers, which protect the self-cured systems from discoloration after exposure to sunlight. UV-cured systems require a limitation on the maximum depth of filled restorative that can be cured at one time, since the filler particles attenuate UV radiation. The limit-layer is generally established as 1-1-5 mm maximum thickness. Therefore, UV-cured filled systems are more time-consuming in restorations of deeper cavities. This liability is also in evidence as it affects the degree of polymerization of UV-cured filled systems. The uncertainty of complete polymerization is apparently responsible for highly erratic compressive strength data found with UV-cured restoratives. Normally, the amount of unpolymerized monomer is much less predictable in UV-cured systems, over that which is obtained in self-cured materials. The presence of a larger fraction of unpolymerized monomer creates a greater potential for pulpal injury from UV-cured restorative materials. The catalyst used in several UV-cured systems is benzoin methyl ether, a compound of rather high toxicity (LD50:300 mg/kg). The safety of using UV radiation in the vicinity of oral mucosa has not been firmly established. The design of the UV lamp should provide for focusing all radiation onto hard tissue. However, UV-cured systems do offer several advantages over self-cured systems. They normally are one-component systems and therefore are more convenient to use in certain types of applications, e.g., fissure sealing. UV-cured systems also provide an unlimited working time, an important advantage for specific applications.

Effect of medication on biomechanical properties of rabbit bones: heparin induced osteoporosis.

The aim of this controlled study is to investigate the effect of heparin on osteoporosis initiation and of calcitonin and tamoxifen on the progress of osteoporosis induced by heparin through biomechanical means and, thus, to assist in clinical usage of these drugs. 32 four-month-old female New Zealand white rabbits were divided into four different experimental groups. The animals in group A were administered heparin (Liquemine) intraperitoneally at the dosage of 1000 IU/kg/day. The animals in group B were injected the same amount of heparin as those of group A, and in addition, were given calcitonin at the dosage of 100 IU/kg/day. The animals in group C were medicated the same way as group B but 2 mg/kg/day tamoxifen (Nolvadex) was orally added into their intestine via cannula, one side connected to the injector. The animals in group D were the control. The experiment lasted 8 weeks. The animals in all experimental groups showed the same growth pattern as that of the control group. Whole-bone femur, humerus and tibia specimens were subjected to 3-point bending tests while sections from the proximal ends of the same specimens were subjected to compression tests. The data, recorded as load vs deflection, were converted into stress vs strain using the strength of materials formulae. The data obtained from the bending and the compression experiments were treated separately. The stiffness of the bones of the medicated groups were compared with those of the control groups. Our data indicated that the tamoxifen treated humera, femora and tibiae attained the largest bending stiffness in all cases investigated. However, this was not the case for compression. None of the drug administered groups attained the stiffness of the control group except for the case of tamoxifen treated femora which attained stiffness close to that of the controls. The results show that heparin altered the mechanical properties of bones indicating osteoporosis, tamoxifen was effective in reducing the effect of heparin while calcitonin yielded no conclusive result.

A hierarchical storage management (HSM) scheme for cost-effective on-line archival using lossy compression.

A hierarchical storage management (HSM) scheme for cost-effective on-line archival of image data using lossy compression is described. This HSM scheme also provides an off-site tape backup mechanism and disaster recovery. The full-resolution image data are viewed originally for primary diagnosis, then losslessly compressed and sent off site to a tape backup archive. In addition, the original data are wavelet lossy compressed (at approximately 25:1 for computed radiography, 10:1 for computed tomography, and 5:1 for magnetic resonance) and stored on a large RAID device for maximum cost-effective, on-line storage and immediate retrieval of images for review and comparison. This HSM scheme provides a solution to 4 problems in image archiving, namely cost-effective on-line storage, disaster recovery of data, off-site tape backup for the legal record, and maximum intermediate storage and retrieval through the use of on-site lossy compression.

Dynamic-range compression in surface-coil MRI.

The large dynamic range in signal intensity present in MR surface-coil images makes proper windowing and photography difficult. By removing the low-spatial frequency information caused by variations in surface-coil field intensity from the high-spatial frequency information containing the image data, a considerable compression of this dynamic range of signal intensity is possible. To accomplish this, a technique was implemented on a digital computer for use with MR surface-coil image data. The compression was done as a postprocessing option after the patient scan had been completed and therefore did not alter actual scan times. Although the image signal-to-noise was not altered, the ease of photography for most images was improved. Thus, digital dynamic-range compression is a practical technique to aid in surface-coil MRI studies.

STABIX: summary-statistic-based GWAS indexing and compression.

MOTIVATION: Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) are widely used to investigate the role of genetics in disease traits, but the resulting file sizes from these studies are large, posing barriers to efficient storage, sharing, and querying. This issue is especially important for biobanks like the UK Biobank that publish GWAS for thousands of traits, increasing the volume of data that must be effectively managed. Current compression and query methods reduce file sizes and allow for quick genomic position-based queries but do not provide utility for quickly finding loci based on their summary statistics. For example, finding all SNVs in a particular p-value range would require decompressing and scanning the whole file. We propose a new tool, STABIX, which introduces summary-statistic-based queries and improves upon the standard bgzip compression and Tabix query tool in both compression ratio and decompression speed. RESULTS: When applied to 10 GWAS files from PanUKBB, STABIX created smaller compressed data and indices than Tabix for all files, where bgzip and tbi files were an average of 1.2 times the size of STABIX compressed files and indexes. In the same 10 files, STABIX per gene decompression was, on average 7× faster than Tabix per gene decompression, and achieved faster per gene decompression times for over 99% of nearly 20,000 genes. [Reduction of reconstruction time and data volume of sinogram by angular compression for clinical three-dimensional whole body FDG-PET].

In positron emission tomography (PET), the large number of lines of responses in three-dimensional (3D) acquisition mode creates a high volume of sinogram data and increases reconstruction time in iterative reconstruction. We tried to decrease sinogram data volume by reducing the number of views using angular compression and then evaluated the accuracy of this mashed mode. Three methods were compared, conventional mode (CONV), X2 mashed mode (X2: two adjacent projection angles are added together), and X4 mashed mode (X4: four adjacent angles added). A point source of (18)F was used to measure spatial resolution. A hot spot phantom made of 6 hot spheres (10-38 mm in diameter) within water of 20 cm in diameter was scanned to evaluate the recovery coefficient (RC). A lung-heart-liver phantom made of homogeneous radioactive myocardium, a spherical hot mass in the lung (10 mm in diameter), and background activity in the liver was scanned to evaluate the homogeneity of the myocardial wall. The quality of the reconstructed images was evaluated in terms of the normalized mean square error (NMSE), Bull's eye map, profile curve, and peak value of the spherical hot mass. The reconstruction times of X2 and X4 were one-half and one-quarter, respectively, of that of CONV. In terms of spatial resolution, FWHM of CONV, X2, and X4 were, 4.26, 4.33, and 4.48 (mm) at the center, 4.81, 5.68, and 8.73 tangentially, and 8.01, 8.19, and 8.27 radially at R=200 mm, respectively. RC was similar for all methods. The NMSE values of X2 and X4 compared with CONV were 0.0003 and 0.0014, respectively. In the hot mass, these methods showed almost the same profile curves, although the peak value of X4 was only -1.95% less than that of CONV. Although the result of spatial resolution of X4 was slightly degraded, image quality and physical performance were good. Therefore, the X4 mashed mode used with angular compression was considered clinically useful.

Multivariate curve resolution of wavelet and Fourier compressed spectra.

The multivariate curve resolution method SIMPLe to use Interactive Self-Modeling Mixture Analysis (SIMPLISMA) was applied to Fourier and wavelet compressed ion-mobility spectra. The spectra obtained from the SIMPLISMA model were transformed back to their original representation, that is, uncompressed format. SIMPULSMA was able to model the same pure variables for the partial wavelet transform, although for the Fourier and complete wavelet transforms, satisfactory pure variables and models were not obtained. Data were acquired from two samples and two different ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) sensors. The first sample was thermally desorbed sodium gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB), and the second sample was a liquid mixture of dicyclohexylamine (DCHA) and diethylmethylphosphonate (DEMP). The spectra were compressed to 6.3% of their original size. SIMPLISMA was applied to the compressed data in the Fourier and wavelet domains. An alternative method of normalizing SIMPLISMA spectra was devised that removes variation in scale between SIMPLISMA results obtained from uncompressed and compressed data. SIMPLISMA was able to accurately extract the spectral features and concentration profiles directly from daublet compressed IMS data at a compression ratio of 93.7% with root-mean-square errors of reconstruction < 3%. The daublet wavelet filters were selected, because they worked well when compared to coiflet and symmlet. The effects of the daublet filter width and compression ratio were evaluated with respect to reconstruction errors of the data sets and SIMPLISMA spectra. For these experiments, the daublet 14 filter performed well for the two data sets.
