Responses of single neurons in the primary projection zone of the somatosensory cortex to conditioned and electrocutaneous reinforcing stimuli were investigated in chronic experiments on cats with a preliminary developed sound conditioned defensive reflex. Five types of neuronal responses to reinforcing stimulus during application of combination were separated; such differentiation was impossible for neuronal responses appearing in the place of the absent reinforcing stimulus. A comparison of neuronal spike activity with the conditioned movement reaction revealed strict correlation between these processes. The conditioned movement reaction usually preceeded the conditioned neuronal response.

The procedure of elaboration of conditioned defensive pneumostomum closure was reproduced in neurophysiological experiments on half-intact preparation of the snail. Activity of identified command neurones involved in the reinforcing unconditioned reflex, was recorded intracellularly. Conditioned and unconditioned stimuli converged on these neurones. Excitability of the explored command neurones increased during the first stages of conditioning. Appearance and consequent intensification of the initially absent spike response to the conditioned stimulus was essentially due to this excitability change. Command neurones action potentials evoked by the conditioned stimulus elicited some effector reactions which were the first signs of conditioning. The conclusion is made that the excitability changes in certain nerve cells are essential for determining the initial phase of conditioning.
In experiments on cats with chronically implanted thermodes it was shown that bilateral cooling of the sensorimotor, associative (parietal), and visual cortical areas causes changes in cardiac and motor components of a conditioned food-procuring reflex; the changes reach their maximal value when the temperature is considerably lowered. Functional cold elimination of cortical areas leads to simultaneous blockade of both components, whereas brain self-warming after cessation of cooling-to their simultaneous recovery. It is shown that the cerebral cortex participates in providing for interconnection between vegetative and somatic components of the conditioned reflex.
