An aggressive approach to prostatic cancer.

During the last 47 years an aggressive approach to the treatment of prostatic malignancies has been maintained at the Duke University Medical Center. Radical prostatectomy, usually by the perineal route and, more recently, by the retropubic technique in conjunction with pelvic lymphadenectomy, has been vigorously applied in patients with diffuse stages A, B and even C diseases. A 5-year survival rate of 80 per cent has been documented. Hormonal therapy has been equally vigorous, most often embracing orchietomy at the time of diagnosis with immediate initiation of estrogen therapy. Patients so treated exhibited a 5-year survival rate of 49 per cent, far greater than the average survival rates usually quoted. Radiation therapy had been used primarily in conjunction with other treatment measures, and multiple drug chemotherapy is now being used in patients who demonstrate disseminated and progressive disease, refractory to other measures previously instituted. By maintaining flexible combinations of all modalities of therapy our overall 5-year survival rate of 50 per cent has been achieved with all patients exhibiting all stages and classifications of prostatic carcinoma.

Social organization and aggression in a group of olfactory bulbectomized male mice.

Olfactory bulbectomized and control male CF-1 strain mice were housed in separate, large, seminatural environments over a 30-day observation period. Control mice engaged in vigorous fighting behavior before a dominant animal emerged. The alpha mouse established the floor area as its territory and vigorously attacked all other mice that ventured from the second tier of the enclosure to the floor. Lower ranking mice had numerous body scars, were much less aggressive, and engaged in a variety of nonaggressive social interactions. In contrast, bulbectomized mice did not fight and roamed freely through all areas of the environment. These mice largely ignored one another, engaged in little or no social behavior, and had no body scars. When two anosmic mice came into physical contact, they appeared startled and moved away from one another. These results, together with those of prior studies, indicate that olfaction plays a critical role in virtually all aspects of social behavior in male mice.

Youth risk behaviour in a Chinese population: a territory-wide youth risk behavioural surveillance in Hong Kong.

This cross-sectional study investigated the prevalence rates of different categories of youth risk behaviour by age, sex and parental education. The study population consisted of 26,111 Hong Kong students, aged 10-19 years, recruited from 48 primary (primary grades 4-6) and secondary schools (secondary grades 1-7). Less than one-third of subjects participated in vigorous exercise regularly, about one-third consumed an unhealthy diet frequently, 18% had tried smoking, and 14.5% had seriously considered attempting suicide. Although only 3.4% of students reported experience of sexual intercourse, less than half used a contraceptive device. Older students had higher prevalence rates of health-compromising behaviours than younger students. Female students were more likely to report suicide-related behaviour, attempting weight loss, and non-participation in vigorous physical activities. Students with parents of a lower educational background were more likely to report rarely or never wearing seat belts and bicycle helmets, suicide-related behaviour, smoking, sexual intercourse before 13 years of age, and attempting weight loss. The availability of data on youth health risk behaviours would enable health educators, public health practitioners and clinicians to plan appropriate screening and counselling for risk behaviours in early adolescents.

Can we skill and activate children through primary school physical education lessons? "Move it Groove it"--a collaborative health promotion intervention.

BACKGROUND: Physical education (PE) lessons are an ideal setting to improve child fundamental movement skills (FMSs) and increase physical activity (PA) for optimal health. Despite this, few studies have assessed the potential to do both simultaneously. The "Move It Groove It" primary school intervention in New South Wales, Australia, had this opportunity. METHODS: A whole school approach to implementation included establishment of school project teams, a teacher "buddy" system, project Web site, teacher training workshops, and small grants for equipment. The quasi-experimental evaluation involved 1,045 year 3 and 4 children (aged 7 to 10 years) in nine intervention and nine control rural primary schools (53% boys/47% girls). It utilised pre- and postobservational surveys of (1) mastery or near mastery levels for each of eight FMSs, (2) proportion of PE lesson time spent in moderate to vigorous PA (MVPA) and vigorous PA (VPA), and (3) teacher- and lesson-related contextual covariates. Data were analysed by hierarchical logistic multiple regression. RESULTS: For FMSs, overall mastery or near mastery level at baseline was 47% ranging from 22.7% for the overarm throw among girls to 75.4% for the static balance among boys. The intervention delivered substantial improvements in every FMS for both genders ranging from 7.2% to 25.7% (13 of 16 comparisons were significant). For PA level, mean MVPA at baseline was 34.7%. Baseline MVPA for boys was 38.7% and for girls was 33.2%. The intervention was associated with a nonsignificant 4.5% increase in MVPA and a significant 3.0% increase in VPA. This translates to a gain of <1 minute of MVPA per average 21-minute lesson. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study to show that by modifying existing PE lessons, significant improvements in FMS mastery can be gained without adversely affecting children's MVPA and VPA. To increase PA levels, we recommend increasing the number of PE lessons per week.

Cryopreservation of canine semen using a coconut water extender with egg yolk and three different glycerol concentrations.

Semen was collected by digital manipulation from six adult dogs. The second fraction of the ejaculate was used in this study. The semen was assessed by macroscopic and microscopic criteria 1 min after collection, first dilution, cooling, glycerol addition and thawing. Experiments were conducted to compare the effect of three different concentrations of glycerol in coconut water extender. The freezing method employed was that one described for caprine semen with slight changes. Semen was thawed at 37 degrees C for 1 min. Spermatozoal motility after thawing was 49.2+/-26, 44.2+/-18.3 and 35.8+/-26.8% for groups with 4, 6 and 8% glycerol, respectively. The vigor after thawing was 2.6+/-1.1, 2.7+/-1.0 and 2.1+/-1.2 for these groups, respectively. There was no difference among groups in motility and vigor. However, a smaller percentage of total and secondary abnormalities was observed using 6% glycerol in coconut water extender. In conclusion, the three glycerol concentrations (4, 6 or 8%) can be used successfully in cryopreservation of canine semen using a coconut water extender.

Effect of ejaculation frequency and season on donkey jack semen.

Semen characteristics of first and second successive ejaculates from 6 jacks were evaluated weekly for 12 mo. The semen was collected at 4-h intervals, using an artificial vagina with a female in either natural or induced estrus. The statistical analysis was done by factorial delineation 2 x 2 in randomized blocks. Due to some ejaculation failures, the data had to be divided into 2 Groups (A and B) for statistical analysis: Group A - ejaculates preceded by 2 ejaculates in the previous week and Group B - ejaculates preceded by only 1 ejaculate in the previous week. If no statistical difference was observed between the groups in a given parameter, the data was grouped together. Semen characteristics for the first and second ejaculates, respectively, showed the following mean +/- SEM: gel-free semen volume 29.2 +/- 2.2 and 31.7 +/- 2.2 ml; progressive motility 71.0 +/- 1.6 and 72.9 +/- 1.6%; sperm vigor 3.8 +/- 0.1 and 4.1 +/- 0.1; live spermatozoa for Group A 82.6 +/- 2.1 and 82.3 +/- 2.1%, and for Group B 84.6 +/- 1.4 and 86.6 +/- 1.4%; total number of spermatozoa for Group A 10.6 +/- 0.8 x 10(9) and 5.8 +/- 0.8 x 10(9), and for Group B 13.3 +/- 1.2 x 10(9) and 9.6 +/- 1.2 x 10(9); head abnormalities for Group A 1.2 +/- 0.3 and 1.4 +/- 0.3%, and for Group B 1.6 +/- 0.3 and 1.9 +/- 0.3%; mid piece abnormalities 7.7 +/- 0.7 and 6.1 +/- 0.7%; tail abnormalities 7.3 +/- 0.7 and 6.8 +/- 0.7%; pH 7.6 +/- 0.0 and 7.6 +/- 0.0. Significant differences (P < 0.05) were observed between the animals for all sperm characteristics except for sperm vigor. The means for the first and second ejaculates were significantly different (P < 0.05) for the total number of spermatozoa in all the animals, while the percentage of mid piece abnormalities was significantly different in only 1 jack. Seasonal effects on sperm parameters were observed only for semen pH.

Risk of cardiovascular events and rofecoxib: cumulative meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The cyclo-oxygenase 2 inhibitor rofecoxib was recently withdrawn because of cardiovascular adverse effects. An increased risk of myocardial infarction had been observed in 2000 in the Vioxx Gastrointestinal Outcomes Research study (VIGOR), but was attributed to cardioprotection of naproxen rather than a cardiotoxic effect of rofecoxib. We used standard and cumulative random-effects meta-analyses of randomised controlled trials and observational studies to establish whether robust evidence on the adverse effects of rofecoxib was available before September, 2004. METHODS: We searched bibliographic databases and relevant files of the US Food and Drug Administration. We included all randomised controlled trials in patients with chronic musculoskeletal disorders that compared rofecoxib with other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or placebo, and cohort and case-control studies of cardiovascular risk and naproxen. Myocardial infarction was the primary endpoint. FINDINGS: We identified 18 randomised controlled trials and 11 observational studies. By the end of 2000 (52 myocardial infarctions, 20742 patients) the relative risk from randomised controlled trials was 2.30 (95% CI 1.22-4.33, p=0.010), and 1 year later (64 events, 21432 patients) it was 2.24 (1.24-4.02, p=0.007). There was little evidence that the relative risk differed depending on the control group (placebo, non-naproxen NSAID, or naproxen; p=0.41) or trial duration (p=0.82). In observational studies, the cardioprotective effect of naproxen was small (combined estimate 0.86 [95% CI 0.75-0.99]) and could not have explained the findings of the VIGOR trial. INTERPRETATION: Our findings indicate that rofecoxib should have been withdrawn several years earlier. The reasons why manufacturer and drug licensing authorities did not continuously monitor and summarise the accumulating evidence need to be clarified.

Impact of change to early diagnosis and surgery in major upper gastrointestinal bleeding.

The diagnostic, operation, and mortality rates in two series of patients with major upper gastrointestinal bleeding have been compared. In one (1968-69) patients were admitted to medical wards, radiology was the only investigation, and few were operated on. In 1972-74 a more vigorous policy was adopted with investigation by both radiology and endoscopy, more (and earlier) surgery, and intensive care by a surgical team. Failure to reach a diagnosis fell from 38-9% to 5-7%; the operation-rate increased; transfusion requirements decreased; and mortality in both operated (47% v. 11%) and non-operated (17% v. 8%) fell. A policy of early and vigorous investigation and management by a surgical team is urged for patients presenting with severe bleeding from the duodenum, stomach, or oesophagus.

How should age affect management of acute myocardial infarction? A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: About 75% of patients with acute myocardial infarction are older than 70 years, but patients in this age group are commonly treated less vigorously than younger patients. This differential treatment may partly reflect clinicians' misconceptions about the outlook of such patients, and the importance of age in clinical decisions. We examined how age does and should affect the management of patients and risk stratification in acute myocardial infarction. METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, we recruited 1225 consecutive patients admitted with acute myocardial infarction to a district general hospital in east London. The primary endpoint was death. We used tabulation and regression methods to analyse the association between age group and clinical variables. FINDINGS: Patients aged 70 years or older took a longer time to arrive in hospital and were less likely to receive thrombolysis or discharge beta-blockers than patients younger than 60 years: odds ratio 0.63 (95% CI 9.45-0.88) for thrombolysis and 0.25 (0.16-0.37) for beta-blockade, adjusted for sex, diabetes, previous acute myocardial infarction, Q wave infarction, and left-ventricular failure. Left-ventricular failure was the strongest independent predictor of death within 1 year of infarction with a hazard ratio of 4.76 (3.53-6.43), adjusted for age, sex, diabetes, and Q wave infarction. Patients aged 70 years or older without left-ventricular failure had significantly better survival at 1 year after acute myocardial infarction than patients under 60 years with left-ventricular failure. 70.8% (62.2-78.2) of the older patients who survived to hospital discharge were still alive 3 years later. INTERPRETATION: Elderly patients with acute myocardial infarction were treated less vigorously than younger patients. The prognosis of acute myocardial infarction, however, was substantially affected by the development of left-ventricular failure and other clinical indices, such that many older patients had a better outlook than younger patients with adverse clinical factors. In planning risk-based management, consideration of age independently of clinical status is inappropriate.

Variability in plant-microbe interaction between Lupinus lines and Bradyrhizobium strains.

Even though lupin (Lupinus albus L.) is known to potentially fix 150-200 kg/ha nitrogen for the use of a succeeding crop, precise information about lupinxBradyrhizobium strain interaction under the climatic conditions prevalent in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States is unknown. We conducted two greenhouse experiments with the objective of characterizing this symbiotic relationship and to evaluate potential interaction between Bradyrhizobium strains and lupin lines. In the first experiment, performance of 60 bradyrhizobial strains was evaluated by inoculating three lupin cultivars and using combined score, which consisted of an arithmetic total of plant vigor, nodulation scores from crown root, nodulation scores from fibrous roots, shoot dry weight, and root dry weight. In the second experiment, performance of 80 lupin lines was evaluated by inoculating with three selected Bradyrhizobial strains and using the combined score, which consisted of an arithmetic total of plant vigor, acetylene reduction activity, nodule number per plant, nodule weight per plant, and dry shoot weight. Significant variation existed for all traits in both experiments except for nodule number in the second experiment. Significant Bradyrhizobial strain by lupin line interaction existed for nodulation score, shoot and root dry weights, and the combined scores. Comparison of relative ranks indicated that nodulation effectiveness was dependent on specific strain and lupin line combinations. It was concluded that specific Bradyrhizobial strain and lupin line combinations would need to be identified for successful utilization of lupin's capability to fix atmospheric nitrogen for use in low-input and sustainable agriculture.

CD4 expression is important but not essential for infection with exogenous mouse mammary tumor virus.

We studied local events in the popliteal lymph nodes of CD4-deficient mice following foot pad injection with an MMTV strain which carries the gene for a V beta 14-specific superantigen. Injection of the V beta 14-specific MMTV induced vigorous expansion of V beta 14+ CD4+ T cells and B cells in their lymph nodes of CD4+/- heterozygous control mice. On the other hand, CD4-/- mice injected with the MMTV showed a proliferation of V beta 14+ T cells among the population of TCR alpha beta + CD4-CD8- T cells, although to a lesser extent. This phenomenon was not accompanied by vigorous B cell expansion. A PCR assay revelated that the MMTV definitely infected the lymph nodes cells of the CD4-/- mouse. However, the infectivity of the MMTV in CD4-/- mice was approximately 20 times lower than that in CD4+/- mice. These findings indicate that, in MMTV infection of CD4-deficient mice, the superantigen-reactive T cells among the population of TCR alpha beta +CD4-CD8- T cells substitute for the superantigen-reactive CD4- T cells of normal mice, and that the absence of CD4 molecules decreased the infectivity of MMTV because of insufficient expansion of the superantigen-reactive T cells.

Effect of medical therapy on survival of patients with dilated cardiomyopathy.

Few studies have been conducted that focus on survival as the end point of medical therapy of CHF. No vigorous studies have been conducted in dogs. It is generally accepted that diuretic therapy is an essential component of the therapy of CHF in cardiomyopathic dogs. Significant symptomatic improvement is afforded by diuretics, and acute death may be prevented. In this context diuretics can be said to improve survival. However, diuretics do not alter the natural progression of cardiomyopathy and in this context do not favorably influence long-term survival. Digitalis glycosides have been shown in humans to improve various parameters of CHF in a subset of patients with either atrial fibrillation or third heart sounds. In dogs, these gallop heart rhythms due to third heart sounds are usually associated with myocardial failure due to dilated cardiomyopathy. In spite of symptomatic improvement, no study has demonstrated an unequivocal favorable effect of digoxin on survival of patients with dilated cardiomyopathy. Likewise, there is no convincing evidence of an adverse effect on survival. Newer, powerful inotropes, such as milrinone, often demonstrate impressive short-term improvements in left ventricular function, clinical signs, and exercise tolerance in patients with CHF. However, their long-term benefits are much less impressive, they are arrhythmogenic, and they have not been shown to prolong survival. In fact, long-term milrinone therapy in humans has had an unfavorable influence on mortality. Vasodilators offer the potential advantage of increasing left ventricular performance without an associated increase in myocardial oxygen demand and cardiac rhythm disturbances. The only vigorous survival study that unequivocally demonstrated improved survival of patients with advanced CHF due to myocardial failure, including dilated cardiomyopathy, was the Consensus Trial. Survival of patients receiving enalapril was significantly better than those receiving placebo. In fact, the trial was stopped prematurely by the ethical review committee when it became obvious that the results favored the enalapril group. Although the use of beta-adrenergic blocking drugs in cardiomyopathic patients with CHF is controversial and associated with a risk of short-term deterioration of left ventricular function, their use in human medicine is gaining acceptance. Although hemodynamic and clinical evidence of improvement has been demonstrated along with withdrawal-associated deterioration, the only study purporting a beneficial effect on survival used retrospective controls.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Rapid oral hydration results in hydronephrosis as demonstrated by bedside ultrasound.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To determine whether vigorous oral hydration (20 mL/kg) causes hydronephrosis as determined by bedside ultrasound. METHODS: We conducted a prospective laboratory trial in 35 healthy volunteers weighing less than 90 kg and between the ages of 18 and 50 years. The right kidney of the volunteers was scanned by emergency physicians at time 0 both before and after voiding, and the volunteers then drank 20 mL/kg of bottled water. The kidney was scanned in the transverse and sagittal planes both before and after voiding at 60 and 90 minutes after completion of the water load. The scans were interpreted by a physician trained and credentialed in emergency ultrasound, blinded to the volunteers' identity, the time of the scan, and the volume of urine voided by the subject. Images were rated as to the degree of hydronephrosis according to literature-established criteria, as follows: grade 0=no hydronephrosis, grade 1=mild, grade 2=moderate, and grade 3=severe hydronephrosis. RESULTS: Hydronephrosis was present in 3 (8.6%) of the 35 subjects at time 0 (prehydration), 24 (68.6%) at 60 minutes, and 20 (57.1%) at 90 minutes. Overall, hydronephrosis occurred at least once in 28 (80%) of the 35 subjects after oral hydration compared with 3 (8.6%) of the 35 subjects before hydration. Hydronephrosis was found to be significantly related to forced hydration for all posthydration times (60 minutes, 90 minutes, and 60+90 minutes combined) versus prehydration time 0 (P <.001). CONCLUSION: Without prior fluid intake, even mild degrees of hydronephrosis were relatively uncommon, and seen in only 8.6% of study patients. In the presence of vigorous oral hydration, however, mild or moderate hydronephrosis is a frequent occurrence seen at least once in 80% of our study of healthy volunteers after hydration. Caution is warranted in this setting when interpreting mild or moderate hydronephrosis found on bedside ultrasound by emergency physicians.

Current status of laryngectomee rehabilitation: II. Causes of failure.

The study records of 47 laryngectomees were analyzed to determine the factors related to acquisition of failure to acquire esophageal speech and to successful or unsuccessful rehabilitation. The successful speakers wee able to phonate longer preoperatively, had less postoperative radiotherapy and dysphagia, took more speech instruction, and were more vigorous and tender-minded. Factors that correlated with successful rehabilitation were less postoperative radiotherapy, more vigor, greater imaginativeness, independence, and self-assuredness, and absence of denial.

[Physical sports activity in a representative sample of the population of Región de Murcia, Spain].

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of intense physical activity according to age and sex in the region of Murcia, Spain, and to analyze its association with major demographic and socioeconomic determinants and other cardiovascular risk factors. METHODS: Survey of a representative sample of the population aged between 18 and 65 years from Murcia was performed using multistage random sampling with definition of the sample quotas. A total of 3091 individuals were surveyed. The frequency and duration of intense physical sports activity during the two weeks prior to the survey was obtained using a validated questionnaire. Information was also collected on socioeconomic variables, smoking, blood pressure, weight and height and a blood test was performed to determine plasma lipids. Intense or vigorous physical activity (> or = 6 Metabolic Equivalents [MET]) was measured in kcal/day and reduced to hours/week to give three categories: no vigorous physical activity, less than 2 hours/week, and 2 hours/week or more. RESULTS: Overall, 17.8% (95% CI: 16.6-19.0) of the adult population of the region of Murcia performed intense physical activity for > or = 2 hours/week. The figures were twice as high in men (23.1%; 95% CI: 21.0-25.2) than in women (12.5%; 95% CI: 10.9-14.1). In the logistic regression analysis, a higher frequency of intense physical activity was associated with age, level of education and employment situation. In men it was also associated with occupation and residence in urban areas. CONCLUSIONS: During the study period, one in five adults in the region of Murcia took intense physical sports activity with a frequency and duration that were compatible with the prevention of episodes of coronary ischemia.

Safety and efficacy of E coli enterotoxin adjuvant for urease-based rectal immunization against Helicobacter pylori.

Low dose E. coli heat-labile enterotoxin (LT), delivered orally or enterically, has been used as an adjuvant for Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) urease in healthy adults. In this study we aim to test the safety and adjuvant efficacy of LT delivered rectally together with recombinant H. pylori urease. Eighteen healthy adults without present or past H. pylori infection were enrolled in a double blind, randomized, ascending dose study to receive either urease (60 mg), or urease (60 mg) + LT (5 or 25 microg). The immunization preparation was administered per rectum on days 0, 14 and 28. Serum, stool and saliva anti-urease and anti-LT IgG and IgA antibodies (Abs) were measured and urease-specific and LT-specific antigen secreting cells (ASCs) were counted in peripheral blood at baseline and 7 (ASC counts) or 14 days (antibody levels) after each dosing. Peripheral blood lymphoproliferation assays were also performed at baseline and at the end of the study. Rectally delivered urease and LT were well tolerated. Among the 12 subjects assigned to urease+LT, 2 (16.7%) developed anti-urease IgG Abs, 1 (8.3%) developed anti-urease IgA Abs, and 3 (25%) showed urease-specific IgA(+) ASCs. Immune responses to LT were more vigorous, especially in subjects exposed to 5 microg LT. In the urease+ 5 microg LT group, anti-LT IgG and IgA Abs developed in 60 and 80% of the subjects, respectively, while LT-specific IgG(+) and IgA(+) ASCs were detected in all subjects. The magnitude of the anti-LT response was much higher than the response to urease. No IgA anti-urease or anti-LT Abs were detected in stool or saliva and lymphocyte proliferative responses to urease were unsatisfactory. In conclusion, rectal delivery of 5 microg LT is safe and induces vigorous systemic anti-LT immune responses. Further studies are needed to determine if LT can be an effective adjuvant for rectally delivered antigens.

Simulation of 1-year-old Populus tremuloides response to ozone stress at Ithaca, USA, and Suwon, Republic of Korea.

The growth of 1-year-old aspen was simulated using TREGRO, a computer simulation model of individual tree growth, to assess potential effects of ozone (O3). TREGRO was parameterized using information from a field experiment conducted at Ithaca, NY, USA; the model was then applied using environmental information from Suwon, Korea, where O3 exposures of aspen had not been conducted. In the parameterization at Ithaca, the simulated and measured total biomass differed by about 3% and the differences between measured and simulated biomass gain of leaf, shoot, and root were 15.4, 8.3, and 4.4%, respectively. Simulating growth at Suwon required adjustment in growth rates to match measured growth due to the different weather conditions at the two cities. The assimilated carbon was evenly distributed to each tissue (foliage, branch, stem, coarse, fine roots) in Suwon, whereas it was mainly allocated to vigorous stem growth in Ithaca. The vigorous growth under Suwon conditions resulted in less total non-structural carbon and perhaps trees more vulnerable to O3 stress. Although the ambient O3 in Suwon (1.2 ppm.h of sum of the hourly concentrations greater than 0.06 ppm [SUM06]) was lower than that in Ithaca (2.1 ppm.h of SUM06), a reduction of 8% of total assimilated carbon was found compared to simulation without O3. Severe effects on root growth at elevated O3 (1.7 times ambient) were predicted; however, the effects on leaf growth would not be as severe.

Seasonal variation of gas exchange and pigmentation in branches of three grafted clones of mature ponderosa pine exposed to ozone and acid rain.

Gas exchange and pigmentation responses of mature ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Laws.) branches to ozone and acid rain exposure were investigated using three grafted clones growing in a managed seed orchard. Exposure of one-year-old foliage to twice ambient ozone (2 x AMB) resulted in significant decreases in net photosynthesis (Pn), stomatal conductance (gsw) and pigmentation relative to charcoal-filtered (CF) and ambient (AMB) ozone treatments. Ozone effects on gas exchange and pigmentation were most pronounced during late-season and differed significantly among clones. Environmental parameters (e.g. light, vapor pressure deficit, and temperature) accounted for more variation in Pn than did cumulative ozone exposure. Minimal differences in gsw and Pn among ozone treatments occurred during seasonal periods of high temperature and evaporative demand. Negative effects of 2 x AMB ozone on gsw and pigmentation were greatest for the clones having highest and lowest phenotypic vigor under ambient conditions; the clone of moderate phenotypic vigor under ambient conditions was least sensitive to ozone. Application of simulated acid rain of pH 3.0, pH 5.1 or no rain (NR) had little impact on gas exchange or pigmentation.
