This paper presents the simulation and experimental results of the distribution of droplets produced by electrostatic nozzles inside a venturi scrubber. The simulation model takes into account initial liquid momentum, hydrodynamic, gravitational and electric forces, and eddy diffusion. The velocity and concentration profile of charged droplets injected from an electrostatic nozzle in the scrubber under the combined influence of hydrodynamic and electric fields were simulated. The effects of operating parameters, such as gas velocity, diameter of the scrubbing droplets, charge-to-mass ratio, and liquid-to-gas ratio on the distribution of the water droplets within the scrubber, were also investigated. The flux distribution of scrubbing liquid in the presence of electric field is improved considerably over a conventional venturi scrubber, and the effect increases with the increase in charge-to-mass ratio. Improved flux distribution using charged droplets increases the calculated overall collection efficiency of the submicron particles. However, the effect of an electric field on the droplet distribution pattern for small drop sizes in strong hydrodynamic field conditions is negligible. Simulated results are in good agreement with the experimental data obtained in the laboratory.

Previous studies on doctor-parent-child communication at the general practitioner's surgery showed that the GP and the parent differ fundamentally in the way they enable or constrain child participation. The question how to explain these differences is at the core of the present study. The aim is to describe how the three participants display their orientation to their institutional roles and identities; how they collaboratively co-construct the course of action; and how these discursive constructions structure the ongoing interaction. A qualitative analysis of 106 videos shows that although GP and parent initially show incongruent orientations toward child participation, in the further course of the encounter all three participants jointly establish a situation in which child participation appears to be rather an exception. It is concluded that parental speaking for the child is, in a way, institutionally co-constructed; parents take their responsibility, which is hardly ever questioned by children, and GPs ratify this behaviour by refraining from meta-communicative comments and by aligning with the parent in the course of the interaction. The results are discussed in terms of enabling child participation and implications for medical practice.

Na+/H+ exchange has been implicated in models of ion transport across the branchial epithelium of marine and freshwater fishes. In this preliminary study, we present immunohistochemical data using a polyclonal antibody raised against NHE3 which show NHE3-like immunoreactivity (IR) in the gills from a freshwater and a marine teleost species. In both species, branchial epithelial cells demonstrating NHE3-like IR were localised predominantly to the junction between the filament and the secondary lamellae. However, there was a marked difference in the morphology of the NHE3-like immunoreactive epithelial cells between the species. This morphological difference between the species suggests functional differences in the exchanger, which may be related to marine versus freshwater environments.
