A modified fluorometric procedure for determination of vitamin A in milk was developed to provide rapid analysis of large numbers to samples.. Saponification and a single extraction in a reaction vessel without transfer provided simplicity and standardization. Time and temperature of saponification and time of extraction were studied. Fifteen replicates of four different milks gave standard deviations of .71, .82, 1.26, and .71 on samples with 29, 26, 38, and 26 mug retinol per 100 ml. Recovery of added vitamin A in six amounts in two experiments gave ranges of recovery of 96.0 to104.0 and 95.2 to 105.3% with average recoveries of 100.0 and 99.9%.

An albumin selective urine strip based on bis (3',3''-diiodo-4', 4''-dihydroxy-5',5''-dinitrophenyl)-3,4,5,6-tetrabromo sulfonphthalein dye (DIDNTB) dye was examined in populations with clinical proteinuria. The relationship of albumin to the sum concentration of all protein in urine was found to vary widely even though the albumin concentration generally increased with the total protein concentration. The albumin reagent strips correlated well with immuno-nephrometric assays for albumin on specimens from hypertensives, diabetics, and renal disease which tended to have albumin contents of >/= 50.0%. High proteinuria concentrations of > 250 mg/l, with low albumin contents of </= 30%, occurred more frequently in cases of cancer, infection, and myeloma. The albumin strip read higher than the immuno assay in samples with high proteinuria and low albuminuria. The albumin strip was also less affected by albumin fragmentation than by the immunological assay. Overall, the albumin strip gave a lower risk of false negatives than a protein strip based on tetrabromophenol blue (TBPB) dye and was more sensitive to disease condition. The protein strip was not sensitive to low levels of albumin and the agreement between TBPB dye strip and the quantitative analysis was not as affected by the albumin content.

The contents of myristicin and safrol in the volatile oil of nutmeg and its processed products were determined by HPLC. This method is fast, accurate and gives good resolution. It has also been confirmed that myristicin tends to decrease in varying degrees after the nutmeg has been processed.
This paper reports the result of GS-MS analysis of the essential oils from five species of Asarum, namely, A. heterotropoides var. mandshuricum (cultivated), A. sieboldii (cultivated), A. caudigerellum (from Sichuan), A. sieboldii(from Shandong) and A. sieboldii(wild). Ninety-two constituents were detected, of which 73 compounds were identified.
The contents of volatile oil, myristicin, safrol and methyleugenol, as well as the composition and content of fatty oil in nutmeg, mace and their processed products were comparatively studied. The composition of volatile oil and the detection of trimyristin were compared by TLC. A scientific basis for the development and application of mace has thus been provided.
The highest filled and the lowest free electronic molecular orbital energy of 23 phenolic substances has been calculated with Hückel MO LKAO method. The obtained results have been compared with the data on antioxidizing activity. The majority of phenolic substances with marked antioxidizing activity possessed electrono-donor properties. The quantity of antioxidizing activity depends on the values of the highest filled electronic molecular orbital energy.
The effect of different processing conditions on contents of myrisiticin, volatile oil and fatty lipid in Semen Myristicae was studied by orthogonal design. The result shows that these processing conditions could not influence the contents of myrisiticin, volatile oil and fatty lipid in the processed products of Semen Myristicae, suggesting that processing does not necessarily lower toxicity.

The oxidation reaction mechanism of the 1,2,3-trihydroxybenzene was studied by the Ab initio calculation of the quantum chemistry. The derivative of the hydrazine and THBO(the reaction product of the 1,2,3-trihydroxybenzene and H2O2) and its metal complexes were synthesized and characterized by the IR, Raman spectrum and thermogravimetric analysis. The composition of these complexes and the possible structure of THBO were confirmed.
