Self-disclosure of HIV infection among men who vary in time since seropositive diagnosis and symptomatic status.

OBJECTIVE: To assess self-disclosure of HIV-positive serostatus to family, friends, and intimate lovers among asymptomatic and symptomatic men who varied in length of time since HIV-seropositive diagnosis. Additionally, the study assessed the anticipated and actual interpersonal consequences of disclosure. METHODS: A multiethnic sample of 684 men with HIV/AIDS completed self-administered questionnaires at two HIV-outpatient clinics in Los Angeles. The cross-sectional analysis stratified the men by time since testing HIV-seropositive and symptomatic status. Disclosure to six significant others (intimate lover, close friend, mother, father, sister, brother) was examined in univariate and multivariate analyses. RESULTS: Men recently diagnosed HIV-seropositive (within 2-4 months) were more likely to have informed intimate lovers and friends than family members; disclosure to father was extremely low. Disclosure was generally lower among asymptomatic than symptomatic men; 21% of asymptomatic men who had tested HIV-seropositive in the previous year had not informed any of the six significant others considered in the study. Disclosure rates were higher among men diagnosed less recently. The interpersonal reactions of those informed were more favorable than the reactions non-disclosers anticipated; however, both actual and anticipated reactions were generally supportive. CONCLUSION: Many asymptomatic men inform few or no significant others of their HIV infection in the first few months after HIV diagnosis. Given the generally supportive reactions reported, HIV-seropositive men should be encouraged, when appropriate, to inform family, friends, and intimate lovers of their serostatus.

Receptive and expressive language function of children with symptomatic HIV infection and relationship with disease parameters: a longitudinal 24-month follow-up study.

OBJECTIVES: To longitudinally assess the receptive and expressive language functioning of children with symptomatic HIV disease and to explore the relationship between immune status, computed tomography (CT) brain scan abnormalities, and language dysfunction over time. METHODS: Children with symptomatic HIV infection were administered an age-appropriate standardized comprehensive language test and general cognitive measure prior to starting antiretroviral therapy (n = 44) and again after 6 months (n = 29) and 24 months (n = 17). CD4 percentage and CT brain scans were also obtained at each evaluation. RESULTS: Expressive language was significantly more impaired than receptive language at the baseline, 6- and 24-month evaluations. No significant changes over time were found in receptive or expressive language from baseline to after 6 months of antiretroviral therapy, but despite treatment, language scores declined significantly between 6 and 24 months. Overall cognitive function, however, remained stable from baseline to 24 months. Age-adjusted CD4 percentage increased significantly over the initial 6 months, then remained stable. Overall CT brain scan severity ratings did not change significantly over 24 months. CONCLUSION: Expressive language was consistently more impaired than receptive language over 24 months, further supporting an earlier finding that expressive language was differentially affected by HIV in children with symptomatic disease. Both receptive and expressive language declined significantly after 24 months despite antiretroviral therapy, although overall cognitive function remained stable. Thus, functioning in some domains may be more vulnerable to the effects of HIV and global measures of cognitive ability may mask such differential changes in specific brain functions.

Temporal activity of vastus medialis obliquus and vastus lateralis in symptomatic knee osteoarthritis.

OBJECTIVE: Knee osteoarthritis has a major impact on quadriceps function, yet its effect on the specific temporal recruitment of vastus medialis obliquus and vastus lateralis is unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the electromyographic onset of vastus medialis obliquus activity relative to that of vastus lateralis in individuals with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis and in an asymptomatic control group during the functional task of stair climbing. DESIGN: Cross-sectional, comprising 41 participants with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis and 33 controls matched for age, sex, and body mass. RESULTS: No significant differences were detected in the timing of onset of vastus medialis obliquus relative to that of vastus lateralis between the osteoarthritis and control groups. Radiographic osteoarthritis severity, presence of patellofemoral joint disease, and pain intensity did not seem to influence the temporal relationship of the vastii in the osteoarthritis group. CONCLUSION: The presence of symptomatic, radiographic knee osteoarthritis is not associated with deficits in the temporal recruitment of vastus medialis obliquus and vastus lateralis during stair climbing. This implies that selective retraining of the individual components of the quadriceps is not indicated in rehabilitation programs for patients with this disease.

Most patients with active symptomatic duodenal ulcers fail to develop ulcer-type pain in response to gastroduodenal acidification.

The most frequent symptom of duodenal ulcer is epigastric pain. However, the pathogenesis of duodenal ulcer pain is not established, although it is often attributed to duodenal acidification. The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not gastroduodenal acidification with either 400 ml of pH 1 citric acid or pH 0.85 hydrochloric acid resulted in ulcer-type pain in patients with endoscopically documented active symptomatic duodenal ulcer under doubled-blind randomized conditions. Thirteen consecutive male duodenal ulcer patients with daytime and nocturnal epigastric pain were studied before beginning medical therapy; five with citric acid or sodium citrate at pH's 1, 3, and 7, and eight with hydrochloric acid at pH 0.85 and pH 7 sodium citrate. Ten normal subjects served as controls. Four of the five symptomatic duodenal ulcer patients failed to have pain with the pH 1 citric acid, while one developed pain. Five of the eight patients tested with 0.15 mM hydrochloric acid had no pain. Of the three who developed pain with hydrochloric acid, two had endoscopic evidence of esophagitis (one developed retrosternal pain and one both retrosternal and epigastric pain), and one had the sensation of epigastric "fullness" with both the pH 0.85 and pH 7 solutions. There were no significant differences (p greater than 0.1) between the responses of the duodenal ulcer and normal subjects nor within the duodenal ulcer group in response to the pH 0.85 or 1.0 solutions versus the pH 7 solution. In summary, gastric acidification equivalent to 80 mmol/hour failed to induce pain in most patients with active symptomatic duodenal ulcer. These observations suggest that duodenal ulcer pain is largely unrelated to duodenal acidification.

The benefit of long-term interferon alfa therapy for symptomatic mixed cryoglobulinemia (cutaneous vasculitis/membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis) associated with chronic hepatitis C infection.

The efficacy of long-term interferon therapy for chronic hepatitis C infection with symptomatic mixed cryoglobulinemia has not clearly been defined. We describe a patient with chronic hepatitis C, symptomatic mixed cryoglobulinemia (cutaneous vasculitis), and membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN) who responded clinically, biochemically, and virologically to a 1-year course of interferon therapy. Interferon side effects were minimal. Relapse occurred when interferon was discontinued, and suppressive maintenance interferon therapy was required for clinical, biochemical, and virologic remission. During the 5th year of maintenance therapy, she developed potential side effects that necessitated discontinuation of interferon treatment. After treatment stoppage, a clinical, biochemical, and virologic remission was maintained for more than 1 year. However, the potential side effects, which included eye irritation, arthralgias, myalgias, fatigue, insomnia, memory loss, and depression, persisted. Ophthalmologic, rheumatologic, and neurologic evaluations were nondiagnostic. Psychometric testing revealed dementia and mood disorder. Because the disabling symptoms persisted after 9 months, a health-related quality of life assessment was carried out with the SF-36 survey. Compared with healthy individuals and patients with chronic hepatitis C, our case had a lower health-related quality of life assessment on six out of seven scales and on four out of seven scales of the SF-36 survey, respectively. This case report indicates that long-term maintenance interferon therapy was effective in the treatment of symptomatic mixed cryoglobulinemia and its renal complications and resulted in a clinical, biochemical, and virologic sustained response. It is postulated that the side effects of long-term interferon therapy in this setting may be problematic.

Symptomatic depression and suicidal ideation. A comparative study with 628 children.

A comparison was made of demographic and clinical variables between 481 children aged 15 or less who exhibited symptomatic depression and 147 children who had this symptom and who also had suicidal ideas. Suicidal ideation was associated with disturbed, hostile intrafamilial relationships. It was also associated with age in girls. Significantly, experiences of loss were associated with symptomatic depression rather than with suicidal ideation per se. No specific psychiatric, emotional, or conduct disorder symptoms were found to differentiate between the two groups. Similarly, extrafamilial and social characteristics were not differentiating features. The children with suicidal ideation had no more disturbance of peer relationships or social withdrawal than did their nonsuicidal depressed counterparts and may not, therefore, be readily identifiable by teachers or other responsible adults. Clinical management of potentially suicidal children needs to encompass symptomatic treatment of depression and amelioration of adverse family interactions.

Supramalleolar osteotomy for the treatment of symptomatic tibial malunion.

Supramalleolar osteotomy was performed on eight patients who were symptomatic from a malunion of the distal two-thirds of the tibia. The patient's subjective reports of pain, limp, appearance, instability, and limitation of activity were evaluated pre- and postoperatively. Objective measurements of range of motion, angular deformity, and radiographic signs of ankle arthritis were also evaluated. All of the patients had varus malunion with a mean angulation of 15 degrees. Three of these patients also had sagittal malalignment. Supramalleolar dome or wedge osteotomies were performed to correct the coronal and sagittal plane deformities. Either internal (three patients) or external (five patients) fixation devices were applied to maintain correction. All osteotomies healed. The final mean angulation was 0 degrees in the coronal plane and 8 degrees of recurvatum. Complications included pin tract infections, wound breakdown, failure to completely correct the deformities, and loss of reduction. Seven of the patients reported symptomatic improvement after the procedure. The one patient who had a loss of reduction became more symptomatic.

Symptomatic colonic polyps in childhood: not so benign.

BACKGROUND: The clinical spectrum of symptomatic polyps and the frequency of familial polyposis is not well defined in children. In the present study, a series of children with juvenile polyposis coli (JPC) and non-JPC polyps were studied. METHODS: Children with symptomatic colonic polyps and negative family history of polyps were ascertained by review of endoscopic records. Juvenile polyposis coli was defined as 10 or more juvenile polyps or any juvenile polyp in a relative of an index case of JPC. Polyps were tested for Ki-ras mutations, p53 overexpression, and aneuploidy. RESULTS: Seventy-eight children (age range, 0.4-18 years) were identified, all evaluated for lower gastrointestinal bleeding. Nine (12%) had JPC, 66 (84%) had isolated juvenile polyps, and 3 (4%) had other types of polyps. The JPC and non-JPC groups were similar in age (p = 0.4) and symptom duration (p = 0.3). The JPC group had more polyps (p = 0.0001), and greater likelihood of anemia (p = 0.01), polyps with adenomatous change (p = 0.03), and right-colon polyps (p = 0.001). In three of eight JPC families, polyps were identified in asymptomatic first-degree relatives. No abnormalities in Ki-ras, p53, or aneuploidy were identified. CONCLUSIONS: Juvenile polyposis coli is common in children with symptomatic polyps, and is associated with anemia, right-colon polyps, and adenomas. The risk of polyps and of colorectal cancer in relatives of persons with JPC requires further study.

Neutrophil elastase may play a key role in developing symptomatic disseminated intravascular coagulation and multiple organ failure in patients with head injury.

OBJECTIVE: To study the mechanism associated with the development of symptomatic disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) after head injury. METHODS: Plasma parameters were analyzed in patients with symptomatic (group A, n = 10) and asymptomatic DIC (group B, n = 15) induced by head injury, and in patients in whom DIC was caused by sepsis (group C, n = 10). RESULTS: Levels of fibrinogen, alpha2PI-plasmin complex and platelets in group A (58.1 mg/dL, 22.4 microg/mL, 16.0 x 10(4)/ mm3) and group B (98.3, 22.1, 16.6 x 10(4)) were comparable, but differed significantly from those in group C (297.4, 2.4, 6.3 x 10(4)). Significant differences were observed between groups A and B in both neutrophil-elastase (1,528 vs. 293 microg/ml) and D-dimer (42.1 vs. 17.6 microg/mL). CONCLUSION: Neutrophil elastase may be implicated in the development of symptomatic DIC after head injury, whose characteristics include "enhanced fibrinolysis with minimal platelet loss."

A prospective, randomized 1-year clinical trial comparing transurethral needle ablation to transurethral resection of the prostate for the treatment of symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia.

PURPOSE: We assess the 1-year efficacy and safety of transurethral needle ablation of the prostate compared to transurethral resection of the prostate for the treatment of symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective, randomized clinical trial of 121 men 50 years old or older with symptomatic BPH was performed at 7 medical centers across the United States. Of the men 65 (54%) were treated with transurethral needle ablation of the prostate and 56 (46%) underwent transurethral resection of the prostate. Mean and percentage changes from baseline and between cohorts for American Urological Association (AUA) symptom score, AUA bother score, quality of life score, peak urinary flow rate and post-void residual urine volume were measured at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months following treatment. Length of procedure, hospitalization, type of anesthesia, post-procedure catheterization, side effects and sexual function were compared. RESULTS: Transurethral needle ablation and resection resulted in a statistically significant improvement in AUA symptom, bother and quality of life scores, peak urinary flow rate and post-void residual. At 1-year followup, needle ablation and resection were equally effective in enhancing quality of life. Needle ablation had less effect on sexual function, with resection being associated with a greater incidence of retrograde ejaculation. Needle ablation could be performed as an outpatient procedure with local anesthesia while resection required anesthesia and hospitalization. Needle ablation was associated with markedly fewer side effects than resection. CONCLUSIONS: Compared to transurethral resection of the prostate, transurethral needle ablation of the prostate is an efficacious, minimally invasive treatment for symptomatic BPH that is associated with few side effects.

Urodynamic characterization of nonobstructive voiding dysfunction in symptomatic elderly men.

PURPOSE: The pathogenesis of lower urinary tract symptoms in men without bladder outlet obstruction has not been well characterized. Therefore, we defined the urodynamic abnormalities associated with symptomatic nonobstructive voiding dysfunction, and determined the relationship between age and type of dysfunction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Video urodynamic studies of symptomatic men without outlet obstruction were examined. The criterion for a normal bladder outlet was a pressure gradient across the prostatic urethra of 5 cm. water or less in the absence of distal stricture. A maximum isometric contraction pressure less than 60 cm. water was regarded as impaired detrusor contractility. Detrusor instability was defined as involuntary detrusor contractions during filling or the inability to suppress a detrusor contraction after initiation of flow. Patients were categorized into 4 groups based on the urodynamic findings. RESULTS: Of 193 men (mean age 69.6+/-10.5 years) 40.9% had detrusor instability (group 1), 31.1% had impaired contractility (group 2), 10.8% had detrusor instability and impaired contractility (group 3), and 17.1% were urodynamically normal (group 4). Average patient age was significantly lower in group 4 than all other groups. Bladder capacity was lowest in group 1, and group 3 had the lowest voiding efficiency. Maximum flow rate, bladder compliance and symptom scores were not different among the 4 groups. The prevalence of detrusor instability with and without impaired contractility increased, while the proportion of patients without urodynamic abnormalities decreased with age. Bladder contractility did not correlate with age. CONCLUSIONS: The nonobstructed patient population comprises several groups that are functionally distinct while symptomatically similar. Thus, treatment of nonobstructed cases based on symptoms may lead to inappropriate pharmacological therapy and unsuccessful clinical outcomes.

Long-term graft patency rates and clinical outcomes after revascularization for symptomatic traumatic internal carotid artery dissection.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical management of traumatic internal carotid artery (ICA) dissection remains controversial. Therefore, the delayed outcomes and graft patency rates of patients who underwent bypass procedures for symptomatic traumatic ICA dissection were studied. METHODS: Between September 1989 and August 1996, 13 patients (9 male and 4 female patients; mean age, 30.6 yr) underwent 16 revascularization procedures for symptomatic traumatic ICA dissection. The duration of clinical follow-up averaged 47.3 months (range, 12-94 mo) from the date of diagnosis. The duration of radiographic follow-up (catheter or magnetic resonance angiography, duplex Doppler ultrasonography) averaged 24 months (range, 12-60 mo). RESULTS: ICA dissection was caused by blunt (n = 11) or penetrating trauma (n = 2). Associated angiographic abnormalities included seven ipsilateral ICA occlusions, six dissecting aneurysms, two carotid-cavernous fistulae, and six contralateral traumatic ICA dissections. Patients requiring early revascularization (n = 6) underwent bypass procedures an average of 19.2 days after their injuries. Medically managed patients who developed ischemia later were revascularized a mean of 7.8 months after injury. The mean Glasgow Coma Scale score at the time of presentation was 10 (range, scores of 6-15), and the mean Glasgow Coma Scale score before revascularization was 14 (range, scores of 9-15). There were 14 saphenous vein ICA bypasses (8 cervical-to-petrous, 3 cervical-to-middle cerebral artery, 3 petrous-to-supraclinoid) and 2 superficial temporal artery-to-middle cerebral artery bypasses. There was one early postoperative graft occlusion, which responded to surgical thrombectomy. One patient with multiple other traumatic injuries died as a result of a pulmonary embolus 12 months after revascularization. All remaining patients had Glasgow Outcome Scale scores of 5, with patent bypass grafts confirmed during follow-up. CONCLUSION: Revascularization for persistently symptomatic traumatic ICA dissection eliminated ischemia and was associated with excellent long-term outcomes and graft patency rates.

Symptomatic spinal epidural lipomatosis after local epidural corticosteroid injections: case report.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Spinal epidural lipomatosis, which causes symptomatic compression of neural elements, is a well known but uncommon complication of Cushing's syndrome. Spinal epidural lipomatosis has been reported frequently in association with chronic systemic corticosteroid therapy, but thus far only one case has been attributed to local epidural corticosteroid injections. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: We report another case of symptomatic spinal epidural lipomatosis after epidural corticosteroid injections. This is the first such case documented by magnetic resonance imaging and confirmed with surgical exploration. INTERVENTION: The patient's symptoms of neurogenic claudication resolved after lumbar laminectomy in the region of previous corticosteroid injections and the removal of epidural fat, which was compressing the thecal sac. CONCLUSION: This case should alert clinicians that epidural lipomatosis, which causes symptomatic thecal sac compression, is a possible complication, not only of systemic glucocorticoid therapy, but also of local epidural corticosteroid injections.

Tonic adaptation in symptomatic and asymptomatic subjects.

Tonic accommodation and tonic vergence were measured in symptomatic and asymptomatic subjects before, during, and after 45 min of binocular reading at near (5 D). Reading produced significant increases in both tonic levels, with the magnitude of change being similar in the two groups. After reading, both groups exhibited rapid loss of the tonic vergence effect, but showed no evidence for decay of the tonic accommodation effect. Differences between the groups were observed in the rate of adaptation during the course of reading, with both tonic components increasing more slowly for the symptomatic subjects than for the asymptomatic subjects. In addition, baseline tonic accommodation was significantly higher in the symptomatic group than in the asymptomatic group. The results suggest that although the failure to undergo tonic oculomotor adaptation is not a causal factor in asthenopia, the initial steady-state level and/or subsequent temporal changes of tonic accommodation and tonic vergence may be related to nearwork symptomatology.

Hydrogel lens dehydration and subjective comfort and dryness ratings in symptomatic and asymptomatic contact lens wearers.

PURPOSE: To determine whether lens dehydration correlates with discomfort, dryness, and noninvasive tear break-up time in symptomatic and asymptomatic contact lens wearers and whether dehydration of the two lens types varies. METHOD: Twenty hydrogel contact lens wearers with dryness-related symptoms and 20 asymptomatic wearers wore an Etafilcon A lens (Acuvue; Vistakon, Inc., Jacksonville, Florida) in one eye and an Omafilcon A lens (Proclear; Biocompatibles, Norfolk, Virginia) in the contralateral eye for 7 h in a randomized, double-masked study. Lens water content was measured before and after 7 h of lens wear and prelens noninvasive tear film break-up time (NIBUT) was measured immediately after insertion and after 5 h of lens wear. Subjective comfort and dryness were rated at 0, 1, 3, 5, and 7 h of lens wear. RESULTS: The symptomatic group had significantly reduced prelens NIBUT, decreased comfort, and increased dryness, but there was no difference between lenses for these variables. The Omafilcon A lenses dehydrated significantly less than the Etafilcon A lenses, but there was no significant difference in lens dehydration between two subject groups. CONCLUSION: No correlation was found between lens dehydration and subjective dryness and comfort. Symptomatic hydrogel contact lens wearers with decreased wearing time had measurably decreased comfort, increased dryness ratings, and reduced NIBUT.

Symptomatic congenital cytomegalovirus infection: neonatal morbidity and mortality.

Knowledge of the natural history of symptomatic congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in the newborn is essential in order to anticipate complications and assess the potential benefit from antiviral therapy. To define the disease course we reviewed data on 106 neonates with symptomatic congenital CMV infection diagnosed and managed by the investigators. Petechiae, jaundice and hepatosplenomegaly were each noted in 70% or more patients. Microcephaly was noted in 54 of 102 (53%) at birth. Elevated alanine aminotransferase, conjugated hyperbilirubinemia and thrombocytopenia were seen in 83, 81 and 77%, respectively. Eighty-six percent had at least two of the manifestations highly suggestive of congenital infection. Platelet count fell to its nadir during the second week of life whereas elevated alanine aminotransferase and direct bilirubin persisted past the first month. In spite of the difficulty in assessing central nervous system function in the newborn, evidence of damage was present in the majority. Seventy-two had microcephaly, poor suck, lethargy/hypotonia or seizures. Abnormal computerized tomographic scan was present in 16 of 20 (80%) and decreased hearing in 20 of 39 (56%). Cerebrospinal fluid protein was greater than 120 mg/dl in 24 of 52 (46%) and this elevation was associated with neurologic abnormalities as well as hearing loss. The mean length of hospital stay was 13 and 22.4 days for term and preterm infants, relatively. Thirteen infants (12%) died during the first 6 weeks of life. Disseminated CMV infection with multiorgan involvement was evident in 7 of 9 at postmortem examination. We conclude that neonates with symptomatic congenital CMV infection have a multi-system disease with significant morbidity and mortality.

Changes in cognitive coping skills and social support during cognitive behavioral stress management intervention and distress outcomes in symptomatic human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-seropositive gay men.

OBJECTIVE: We have previously reported decreases in dysphoria, anxiety, and total mood disturbance in symptomatic HIV seropositive gay men after a 10-week cognitive behavioral stress management (CBSM) group intervention. This structured intervention was designed a) to increase cognitive and behavioral coping skills related to managing the distress of symptomatic HIV, and b) to increase social support among group members. Here we examine the relative contribution of changes in coping skills and social support during the intervention period to reductions in dysphoria, anxiety, and distress-related symptoms in this sample. METHODS: Participants were randomized to a 10-week CBSM group intervention or to a wait-list control condition. Coping, social supports, and mood were measured before and after the intervention period. RESULTS: Members of the CBSM group (N = 22) showed significant improvement in cognitive coping strategies involving positive reframing and acceptance, and in social supports involving attachment, alliances, and guidance at the end of the 10-week CBSM program compared with controls (N = 18) who showed decrements in these coping abilities and no changes in social support. Improved cognitive coping, specifically acceptance of the HIV infection, was strongly related to lower dysphoria, anxiety, and total mood disturbance in both conditions. Changes in social support and in cognitive coping skills seem to mediate the effects of the experimental condition on the changes in distress noted during the intervention. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that cognitive coping and social support factors can be modified by psychosocial interventions and may be important determinants of the changes in psychological well-being and quality of life during symptomatic HIV infection that can be achieved through this form of intervention.

Symptomatic age-related macular degeneration in Asian patients.

PURPOSE: To characterize retinal and fluorescein angiographic findings of Asian patients with symptoms secondary to age-related macular degeneration (ARMD). METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 453 consecutive medical records corresponding to fluorescein angiograms performed between November 1992 and November 1995 to identify Asian patients with symptomatic ARMD. Presenting visual symptoms, best-corrected Snellen visual acuities, and retinal examination findings were determined from the medical records. Fundus photos and fluorescein angiograms were reviewed. RESULTS: There were 26 symptomatic eyes in 19 Asian patients with a median age of 73 years. Presenting visual symptoms included decreased visual acuity (19 eyes), metamorphopsia (5 eyes), or scotoma (2 eyes). Retinal findings included occult choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in 5 (19%) eyes, serous pigment epithelial detachment (PED) in 8 (31%) eyes, PED with CNV in 5 (19%) eyes, drusen in 5 (19%) eyes, retinal pigment epithelial atrophy in 1 (4%) eye, vitreous hemorrhage in 1 (4%) eye, and a disciform scar in 1 (4%) eye. CONCLUSION: In this cohort of Asian patients with ARMD, the majority of symptomatic eyes had either CNV (46%) or serous PED (31%).
