Career group counseling in undecided college female seniors' state anxiety and career indecision.

A sample of female college seniors experiencing career indecision participated in a career group counseling (n: 16), a wait-list control group (n: 8), and an additional career-counseling group (n: 11). Participants were administered the Career Decision Scale and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory at pretest and posttest. Analysis of covariance of state anxiety scores and career indecision scores yielded significant main effects for treatment. Participants in the career-counseling groups showed a decrease in scores on state anxiety and career indecision. Implications for research and female career group counseling are also discussed.

Prediction of graduate major from cognitive and self-report test scores obtained during the high school years.

Using information from Project TALENT's 11-yr. follow-up (Wise, et al. 1979), 8 graduate major groups were formed for males, 6 for females. Three of the female groups were supplemented by undergraduate majors to increase sample size. Descriptive canonical discriminant analyses were conducted in each sex, high school grade, and separate sets of cognitive and self-report predictors that were administered in high school. Finally, analyses of the combined predictors were conducted in both sexes for the 9th grade only. Two to four canonical discriminants were retained for interpretation on two criteria: lambda probabilities and size of eigenvalues. Discrimination among groups is more effective in males than in females and in later than in earlier grades. Self-report tests discriminate more effectively among graduate major groups than cognitive ones in the cognitively restricted range of talent. Gains in differentiating among groups from adding cognitive to self-report predictors in the 9th grade are relatively modest. The two sets of predictors define overlapping if not identical dimensions. The first two cognitive functions are important supplements to a measure of general intelligence. For both sexes, a combination of mechanical, spatial, and mathematical tests distinguish science majors from those in the humanities and social sciences who appear on a verbal function.

Taiwanese junior college students' needs for and perceptions of a career planning course.

A 30-item survey was developed to assess the career planning needs of junior college students in Taiwan. 159 men and 493 women were surveyed about career planning needs and perceptions of a proposed course model to answer whether women differ from men in such needs and upper and lower division students differ. A series of two-way analyses of variance identified 7 items on which the women expressed needs more strongly than the men and another 8 items on which the responses of lower division students were significantly different from those of upper division students. Students' perceptions of a course model provided recommendations for a course in career education.

Contributions of thinking styles to vocational purpose beyond self-rated abilities.

The present study predicted vocational purpose from thinking styles, a construct at the interface of intelligence and personality. 233 students majoring in history and computer science from a large research-oriented university in the People's Republic of China completed the Thinking Styles Inventory and the Iowa Vocational Purpose Inventory. The participants also rated their own analytical, creative, and practical abilities. In general, results indicated that thinking styles contributed to vocational purpose beyond self-rated abilities. Specifically, the more creativity-generating and complex thinking styles tended to contribute positively to vocational purpose, whereas the more conforming and simplistic thinking styles tended to contribute negatively to vocational purpose. This article points to the need theoretically for integrating the construct of thinking style into the definition of differential psychology. Practical data argue for a collaborative working relationship between teachers and vocational counselors in institutions of higher education.

Career self-efficacy, career outcome expectations and vocational interests among Japanese university students.

The Social Cognitive Career Model proposes that career interests arise from beliefs about capability to execute a course of activity (self-efficacy), and beliefs about the consequences of performing particular activities (outcome expectations). In our study, 301 Japanese university students were given questionnaires including the Vocational Preference Inventory and scales assessing Career Self-efficacy and Career-outcome Expectations. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses indicated both self-efficacy and outcome expectations were significantly related to vocational interests. Outcome expectations accounted for significant incremental variance in explaining interests across six of Holland's vocational environments. Implications of social cognitive theory for career development and interventions among Japanese university students are discussed.

Practices differentiating high-performing from low-performing supported employment programs.

This paper reports on a qualitative study designed to uncover the practices that differentiate programs producing high rates of competitive employment from those with low rates. The study found 13 differentiating practice factors in three areas: building consumer interest in working, getting a job, and maintaining a job. The congruence between these findings and current definitions of "best practice" is discussed.

Reentry concerns of incarcerated substance abusers.

To facilitate planning of a state-wide reentry program for parolees with histories of drug and alcohol abuse, group interviews were conducted to determine the perceived problems and reentry service needs of 110 male and female inmates of Oregon correctional institutions. Expressed concerns about problems related to frustrations of prison experience, familial and peer relationships, parole supervision, and day-to-day survival skills point to significant gaps and biases in existing reentry services planned from an "objective" viewpoint that slights direct assessment of potential clients' needs.

Supported employment and compensatory strategies for enhancing vocational outcome following traumatic brain injury.

Epidemiological research clearly indicates that traumatic head injury has reached epidemic proportions. Incidence rates for head injury are greater than those for cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, and spinal cord injury combined. Many victims suffer from long-term impairments in functional, neurological, medical, neuropsychological and linguistic status. Emotional and behavioural problems are common as well. Additionally, family problems often ensue as a consequence of the victim's dependency and concomitant emotional changes. Investigations of post-injury vocational status indicate that unemployment rates within the first 7 years post-injury range as high as 70% for those with moderate and severe injuries. Researchers have demonstrated that the emotional and neuropsychological changes arising from injury are the greatest contributors to reduced employability. Relatively high unemployment rates strongly suggest that traditional approaches to physical and vocational rehabilitation have been entirely inadequate. To complement existing services and enhance employment outcome, two approaches have been developed and refined for use with victims of head injury. Supported employment is a unique approach which assists the client to select, obtain and maintain suitable employment on the basis of his/her interests and abilities. Compensatory strategies have been developed to help the individual offset intellectual problems which would otherwise interfere with learning job skills and maintaining production levels. Often, compensatory strategies are used in the context of a comprehensive supported employment programme. The greater use of supported employment and compensatory strategies is likely to enhance employment outcomes for those with traumatic head injury. Nevertheless, additional research is needed to more clearly identify the types of techniques which work best for each unique set of problems.

Spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia tarda. Report of a family with autosomal dominant transmission.

We present a clinical and radiographic study of a family with the autosomal dominant form of spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia tarda, in some patients associated with hearing deficiency. Although no causal treatment is possible, correct diagnosis is important to avoid unnecessary treatment and for information about prognosis, genetic counseling, and recommendation of future occupation.

Academic advisement and the RN-to-BSN student.

Recognizing the advisement needs of registered nurse students pursuing a baccalaureate in nursing while managing employment, family, and academic obligations is important. The most useful academic advising functions identified were advice on requirements and registration with respondents indicating self-monitoring of their degree progress. Respondents represented characteristics of adult learners who preferred scheduled interviews for advisement with apparent themes of firmness and availability of the academic adviser and flexibility in requirements.

Student perceptions of academic advising in an RN-to-BSN program.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated academic advisement from the perspectives of RN-to-BSN students in relation to the advisement elements of function, style, and outcome. METHOD: Using multistage sampling, data were collected from 323 students enrolled in either a beginning, mid-way, or final course in the RN-to-BSN curriculum. RESULTS: All aspects of advisor style were perceived to have been employed and important. None of the outcomes were perceived to have been achieved nor important. There was a significant difference (p < 0.05) between students from ADN and Diploma educational backgrounds in relation to their perceptions of the importance of advisement functions and outcomes. Students rated their perceptions in accordance with andragogical learning principles that stressed the importance of individuality. The researcher developed Academic Advisement Questionnaires have content validity and reliability for internal consistency at 0.94 by Cronbach's coefficient alpha. CONCLUSION: Advisement in RN-to-BSN educational programs can positively influence student retention rates by providing advisement that is conducive to the needs and values of adult learner students.

Choosing a career: why not nursing for more high school seniors?

Using a descriptive design, 641 college-bound high school seniors (CBHSS) in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area were surveyed to determine why nursing is not selected more frequently as a career. The findings indicated that the decision to choose or not choose nursing was significantly influenced by demographic characteristics (age, ethnicity, and race), past experiences with nurses/illness, and characteristics preferred in a future career. Those respondents who selected nursing cited wanting to help people, to do important work, and to work with a variety of people as important reasons for their choice. Those not choosing nursing indicated dislike of dying people and the salary as the main reasons for choosing another career.

Advising nursing students in a tightened job market.

Although new graduates face a more restricted job market, we continue to need new registered nurses to replenish and renew the profession. As employment settings shift from hospital to community settings and optimal and cost-efficient skill mixes are determined, faculty will need to work closely with students, administrators, and nurse recruiters to assist new graduates to face the challenges evolving in today's practice environments.
