[Gender equity in health sector reform policies in Latin America and the Caribbean].

Gender equity is increasingly being acknowledged as an essential aspect of sustainable development and more specifically, of health development. The Pan American Health Organization's Program for Women, Health, and Development has been piloting for a year now a project known as Equidad de género en las políticas de reforma del sector de salud, whose objective is to promote gender equity in the health sector reform efforts in the Region. The first stage of the project is being conducted in Chile and Peru, along with some activities throughout the Region. The core of the project is the production and use of information as a tool for introducing changes geared toward achieving greater gender equity in health, particularly in connection with malefemale disparities that are unnecessary, avoidable, and unfair in health status, access to health care, and participation in decision-making within the health system. We expect that in three years the project will have brought about changes in the production of information and knowledge, advocacy, and information dissemination, as well as in the development, appropriation, and identification of intersectoral mechanisms that will make it possible for key figures in government and civil society to work together in setting and surveying policy on gender equity in health.

Appropriate basis of effluent standards for industrial wastewaters.

Designing industrial discharge standards should reflect the numerical compromise between what can be achieved to prevent environmental pollution and sustainable development. They should involve categorical limitations for specific sources. Micropollutants represent the major concern for industrial effluents. A micropollutant-based subcategorization is needed for an effective control of industrial effluents. Regulations imposed require a comprehensive knowledge of polluting processes and sources, and technological limits of available treatment technologies.

African women carry the message. World Conference on Women.

The African Women's Network (AWN), organized by CEDPA alumnae at the Cairo population conference, has expanded its ranks and is bringing the Cairo consensus on women's empowerment to hundreds of NGOs throughout the continent. In November, AWN participants at the African NGO Regional Forum in Dakar helped to draft the Plan of Action for the World Conference on Women in Beijing, ensuring that key Cairo issues--including reproductive health care, sustainable development and poverty alleviation, the impact of AIDS on women, and gender equity--were addressed. With support from the UNFPA, the AWN and CEDPA organized a "Population Tent" at the forum, which highlighted family planning and reproductive health projects in Africa. AWN collaborated with the Senegal women's organization Yewwu Yewwi, the African Population Advisory Committee (APAC), and FEMNET, which is organizing African NGO participation for Beijing. Further expanding awareness of Cairo issues, CEDPA alumnae and staff members Khadijat L. Mojidi, Belkis Giorgis, and Andrea Okwesa conducted workshops on advocacy, gender and development, community-based family planning, and adolescent reproductive health programs.

SIRRUS: evaluation software of the technical and economic profitability of rainwater on an industrial site.

In a sustainable development context, the storm water reuse in industry seems a promising and original alternative, but few experiences exist. A project, sponsored by the European Community and the Artois-Picardie Water Agency, has been carried out by the Renault MCA factory in Maubeuge, demonstrating that it can be profitable, in certain conditions, to reuse storm water in industrial processes. This article summarises this experience, and presents a decision making tool (SIRRUS) that has been developed in this framework by Anjou Recherche (Vivendi Water) to evaluate, on the basis of simple criteria, if this experience is or is not reproducible on a given site, and how much time is necessary to pay the investment back. Its application and different results are also discussed.

[Study on schistosomiasis control strategy in Ertan reservoir].

OBJECTIVE: To explore means and strategies of preventing the spread of schistosomasis transmission due to the building of Ertan Dam. METHODS: To eliminate the infection sources and Oncomelania snails. To install concrete irrigation and piping system of water supply. To encourage the immigrants to build methane-generating tanks and improve sanitary facilities and conditions for families who live near the water-retaining line. RESULTS: 2,360 people and 152 cattle were treated for schistosome infection. Mollusciciding and environmental modification were made for eliminating snails at an area of 3,634,580 m2 and 67,105.5 m2 respectively. The length of concrete irrigation and piping system installed was 51.13 and 104.895 km respectively. Methane-generating tanks, water-heating instruments using solar energy and other sanitary facilities were established in 1,781 households. After three-year intervention, no infected snails were found and no infected human being, cattle and wild rats were detected. CONCLUSION: Schistosomiasis control was financially supported since the very beginning of the Ertan Dam project, which provided a condition for sustainable development. Continued surveillance of snails and infection sources should be carried out, which will provide scientific basis for schistosomiasis control in the Three Gorges region as well as other new projects of hydropower and water conservancy in endemic area.

[Advances in research on ecological land classification].

Land classification is the base of land evaluation, land planning and land management, and plays an important role in the sustainable development of forestry resource. Ecological land classification (ELC) is the main approuch and direction of land classification. Along with the development of landscape ecology and 3S techniques, developing of ecological classification system (ECS) becomes the keystone of ELC. The definition, history, basic characteristics of ELC, the theory of ECS and its' prospects were systematically reviewed in this paper. The prospects were also described for the development of ECS methodology and the application of ELC. The general direction of ecological land research, which was a multi-factors and multi-levels syntheses based on the multi-objects administration of resource (forest, land and waters), was the combination of quantificational and qualitative research. It is necessary to carry out relevant researches in China.

[Soil quality and its evaluation].

Preservation and improvement of soil quality is the basic task for agricultural sustainable development. For this reason, the concept and the evaluation method of soil quality should be clearly understood. In this paper, the concept of soil quality and its advanced researches were reviewed. Soil quality evaluation should be based on soil function, different types of soils should be evaluated by different criterions, and soil quality evaluation should be relational rather than absolute as well. Some methods of soil quality evaluation were introduced, and the selection of evaluation indicators was discussed.

[Use of satellites for public health purposes in tropical areas].

The epidemiological hallmark of the new millennium has been the emergence or recrudescence of transmissible diseases with high epidemic potential. Disease tracking is becoming an increasingly global task requiring implementation of more and more sophisticated control strategies and facilities for sustainable development. A promising initiative involves the use of satellite technology to monitor and forecast the spread of disease. The Health Early Warning System (HEWS) was designed based on successful application of satellite data in food programs as well as in other areas (e.g. weather, farming and fishing). The HEWS integrates data from communications, remote-sensing and positioning satellites. The purpose of this review is to present the main studies containing satellite data on public health in tropical areas. Satellite data has allowed development of more reactive epidemiological tracking networks better suited to increasing population mobility, correlation of environmental factors (vegetation index, rainfall and ocean surface color) with human, animal and insect factors in epidemiological studies and assessment of the role of such factors in the development or reappearance of disease. Satellite technology holds great promise for more efficient management of public health problems in tropical areas.
