Secretions of stingless bees: cephalic secretions of two Frieseomelitta species.

Gas chromatographic and mass spectrometric analysis of the volatile compounds in the mandibular glands of Frieseomelitta varia and the heads of Frieseomelitta silvestrii have revealed relatively simple or more complex mixtures of volatile oxygenated compounds. 2-Alkanols were found to be important components for both species. In F. varia the composition was essentially the same in samples from two widely separated areas and there were small differences between callows and mature, foraging bees. The first electroantennographic studies on stingless bees, using hexane extracts of heads of both species, have demonstrated a response in the workers' antennae to these, as well as to the pure compounds 2-heptanol and 2-nonanol.

Ancylostoma secreted protein 2: cloning and characterization of a second member of a family of nematode secreted proteins from Ancylostoma caninum.

Invading infective third-stage larvae (L3) of parasitic nematodes execute a series of programmed developmental events in response to a host-specific signal encountered during infection. One of these early events is the release of excretory/secretory products. Using an in vitro feeding assay that mimics these early events of infection, a protein released by in vitro activated larvae of the hookworm Ancylostoma caninum was identified. This protein, Ac-ASP-2, was partially sequenced, and the cDNA encoding it isolated by PCR and screening of an A. caninum L3 cDNA library. The Ac-asp-2 cDNA encodes a protein of 219 amino acids that is related to a previously identified protein, Ac-ASP-1, from hookworms. Both molecules are members of an evolutionarily diverse family of molecules that include the venom allergens of the Hymenoptera, and the testes specific proteins/sperm-coating glycoproteins of mammals. Homologues are present in nearly all nematodes tested, as demonstrated by PCR-hybridization and database searching. The Ac-asp-2 mRNA is synthesized in all life history stages, but the gene product is released only by L3 activated to feed in vitro. The wide distribution of the Ac-asp-2 in nematodes and its release in response to host specific signals suggests that Ac-ASP-2 serves an important function in nematode physiology and development, and possibly in the infective process of parasitic species.

Varieties of secrets and secret varieties: the case of biotechnology.

This article examines several trends that have combined to veil the new field of biotechnology in secrecy: the transformation of biotechnology from an essentially academic field characterized by strong norms of openness to a field with extensive corporate connections that have reached even to research in leading universities; the establishment of intellectual property rights for life-forms initiated by the landmark Supreme Court decision, Diamond v. Chakrabarty; and the limiting of public access to information about the genetically altered organisms whose use in agriculture, industry, and medicine falls under government controls. The article also examines the effects of the U.S. biotechnology industry's demand for secrecy on the negotiations for a protocol to the 1972 Biological Weapons Convention, particularly the turn from requirements for transparency to protection of opacity with respect to biotechnology and other biological processes, equipment, and production.

Effect of intraduodenal instillation of 1-phenyl-1-hydroxy-n-pentane on pancreatic exocrine secretions and immunoreactive secretion release in the rat.

Pancreatic juice flow and amylase output, and the concentrations of immunoreactive secretin in portal and peripheral blood were simultaneously determined in anesthetized rats in response to intraduodenal instillation of 1-phenyl-1-hydroxy-n-pentane (PHP), a phenyl carbinol derivative induced from one of the constituents of Curcuma. PHP stimulated both pancreatic juice flow and amylase output and increased portal and jugular plasma secretin levels in a dose-related fashion. During intraduodenal instillation of PHP the pH in the second portion of the duodenum remained consistently above 6.3. Infusion of cyclic somatostatin at a dose of 5 microgram/kg/h significantly suppressed the PHP-induced secretin release, though pancreatic flow rate and amylase output were only slightly and insignificantly suppressed. These observations suggest that PHP release secretin by an acid independent mechanism but also stimulates the exocrine pancreas by a mechanism independent of secretin.
